Douglas Mwonzora, MDC Alliance Clash Over Expulsion Of Candidates Who Contested As Independents

MDC secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora is reported to have clashed with the national council over the expulsion of the party members who contested in the July 30 harmonised elections as Independent candidates. A letter written to Mwonzora by MDC chairperson Tabitha Khumalo instructed him to implement resolutions made by the national council to expel all people who contested as independents. Part of the letter reads,

You will be aware that the national council at its sitting on August 29, 2018, resolved that all those who contested as independent candidates together with those who supported them automatically expelled themselves from the party…This must be done within seven days from receiving this letter.

However, Mwonzora seems to have defied the resolutions by asking party members to present their cases. Wrote Mwonzora,

Please note that those people who stood as independent candidates, but feel that there is no justification in their expulsion must make their representation to the national chairperson in writing immediately…By copy of this letter, the purported dismissal of any members for allegedly supporting independent candidates is set aside and all people are automatically reinstated.

Party spokesperson Jacob Mafume refused to comment saying that this was an internal matter.
