South Africa Considering Hosting AFCON 2019 After Cameroon Was Stripped Of Hosting Rights
The South Africa Football Association (SAFA) said on Sunday that it has been approached by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding the hosting of the 2019 AFCON tournament. South Africa has the required infrastructure to hold the continental soccer showpiece after successfully hosting the 2010 World Cup. Cameroon was set to host the 2019 AFCON edition but was stripped of the hosting rights by CAF due to the coutry’s failure to construct stadiums on time as well as security concerns.
In a statement on its Twitter handle, SAFA said
The Confederation of African Football has asked the Association to seriously consider hosting AFCON 2019. SAFA will, however, meet the government first before making a decision.
FeedbackSAFA is expected to approach the South African government to give its green light on the matter. Hosting the tournament is considered very expensive and the South African government alone can accept the offer from CAF.
