Cricket: the Zimbabwe Select won the six-game series against the Pakistan Shaheens 4-2 as Craig Ervine set a new national record by scoring 195 runs in a thrilling final match played Saturday. Ervine&#8217;s performance propelled the Zimbabwe Select to a 32-run victory. Ervine&#8217;s innings were the highlight of the day, which saw a total of 738 runs scored.
The Pakistan Shaheens won the toss and opted to bowl first.
Zimbabwe suffered an early setback when opener Joylord Gumbie was dismissed for a duck. A &#8220;duck&#8221; in cricket is when a batsman scores zero runs and is dismissed. It is a significant failure as it wastes a wicket. A &#8220;golden duck&#8221; is when a batsman is dismissed on their first ball.
Ervine and Innocent Kaia then put on a 187-run partnership for the second wicket before Kaia was dismissed for 92. Ervine continued to attack the bowling and reached his century off 89 balls. He went on to score 195 off 148 balls before being run out in the final over.
Zimbabwe finished their innings at 385 for 7. The Pakistan Shaheens were set a daunting target of almost 8 runs per over. They lost three early wickets but then mounted a spirited fightback, led by Rohail Nazir, Kamran Ghulam, and Mubasir Khan. Mubasir scored a brilliant century, but the Shaheens ultimately fell short, finishing with a total of 353.

Cricket: Zimbabwe Select Won 4-2 Against Pakistan Shaheens In Six-game Series

Themba Gorimbo, a welterweight UFC fighter from Zimbabwe, made history by becoming the first Zimbabwean to win a fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The UFC is an American mixed martial arts promotion company based in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Gorimbo, who hails from Bikita in eastern Zimbabwe, used his wrestling skills to gain control over his opponent, Takashi Sato (Japanese), for most of the first round. In the second round, Gorimbo floored Sato with an overhand right and continued to rain hammer fists on him until the end of the round.
Although the referee felt that Sato had done enough to escape danger, Gorimbo was declared the winner by unanimous decision. Gorimbo&#8217;s victory is significant for Zimbabwean mixed martial arts (MMA) and comes after he became the EFC welterweight champion in 2020, which served as a gateway for him to fight in other promotions and eventually sign with the UFC.
Despite facing numerous obstacles, including a recent loss and flu on fight day, Gorimbo has remained committed to his training and plans to spend more time in the US for future fight camps. He hopes that his story will inspire the next generation of African fighters.
Themba Gorimbo became EFC welterweight champion in 2020, paving the way for him to fight under other promotions before signing with the UFC. Although he lost his debut fight in February, he remained committed to his training to inspire future African fighters. Speaking after his recent victory, Gorimbo said after his loss in February, everyone back home viewed him with disdain, as if he were a repulsive individual. He told MMA Mania&#8217;s, Alex Behunin:

You know, people kind of ignored me. People that I helped kind of ignored me. A lot of people, even people that were close to me, some of them are called my friends&#8230; even my own brother.

Themba Gorimbo re-committed to his training in South Africa to redeem himself after his loss. He underwent a seven-week training camp in the US, which left him financially drained with only $7 in his bank account on fight night. Despite being sick with the flu on the day of the fight, he achieved a significant victory. Gorimbo was able to overcome various obstacles leading up to the fight, and he reflected on his doubters back home with a philosophical outlook. The 32-year-old continued:

When you are on this journey, sometimes you get caught up and you think everything is fine.
But when you lose… that&#8217;s when the real stuff starts popping up. For those that ridiculed me back home, for those that backstabbed [me]&#8230; God bless them. I&#8217;m on my own path now. I didn&#8217;t lose them, they lost me.

In the future, Gorimbo plans to spend more time in the US for training but will not move permanently. He wants his story to inspire the next generation of African fighters.
After winning his first UFC fight, he auctioned off his fight kit to raise funds for a water pump in his hometown. Gorimbo&#8217;s journey, from his village in Zimbabwe to the UFC, is a testament to the American Dream and serves as an inspiration to many African kids. Despite his success, he remains grounded and committed to making a positive impact on his community.

Themba Gorimbo Made History As First Zimbabwean To Win A UFC Fight

<a href="https://africasacountry.com/2023/05/the-meanings-of-heath-streak/">Fungai Machirori</a> suggests that the career of Zimbabwean cricketing legend <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Heath_Streak/">Heath Streak</a> reflects the unresolved tensions of race and class in Zimbabwe. Machirori, a creative and communication and digital media specialist, says despite this, there are few white Zimbabwean sporting figures who can generate interest and discussion across the country&#8217;s many divides.
Recently, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2023/05/14/health-streak-battling-cancer/">news emerged of Streak&#8217;s critical illness as he battles advanced cancer</a>. Streak, a prominent figure in Zimbabwe&#8217;s golden cricketing era, made his one-day international debut in 1993 and test debut the following month. Streak remains Zimbabwe&#8217;s all-time leading wicket-taker in both Test and ODI cricket, and the only Zimbabwean to complete the double of 1000 Test runs and 100 Test wickets, and 2000 ODI runs and 200 ODI wickets.
Streak and South African Lance Klusener stood out on their sides for their fluency in local languages, in a sport where the majority of players were white. Streak was a native Ndebele speaker who could offer post-match interviews to local media news outlets in the language.
Zimbabwean cricket&#8217;s earliest teams rarely reflected the demographics of a black-majority nation, with most national players being white and generally coming from farming and private school backgrounds. Streak became the Zimbabwean team captain in 2000 but resigned amid tensions with the Zimbabwe Cricket Union board over payments and proposed team quotas based on race. He returned to Zimbabwe&#8217;s captaincy in 2002 but faced criticism for not taking more political stances favourable to the board and government. It was during Streak&#8217;s captaincy at the 2003 Cricket World Cup that <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Henry_Olonga/">Henry Olonga</a> and <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Andy_Flower/">Andy Flower</a> wore black armbands in silent protest over the worsening social and political conditions in the nation.
By 2004, many white players including the Flower brothers and Campbell had left the international fold, and Streak retired from international cricket in 2005. Streak returned to the national team as a coach, first as a bowling coach in 2009, and then as a supporting coach in 2010, before becoming the national team coach in 2016. His tenure was shaky and saw Zimbabwe fail to qualify for the 2019 Cricket World Cup, and he was forced to resign.
In 2021, Streak became controversial after being banned from cricket for eight years by the International Cricket Council for his role in match-fixing in various leagues. Machirori says Streak&#8217;s career mirrors many of the unresolved tensions of race and class in Zimbabwe, yet he remains an integral part of Zimbabwe&#8217;s cricketing story and history.

Heath Streak's Career Reflects Zimbabwe's Race And Class Tensions - Machirori

Former Zimbabwean cricketer and cricket coach Heath Streak is reportedly extremely ill.
In a Twitter post this Saturday, former Minister of Education, David Coltart who is an avid cricket fan, revealed the development without stating the nature of the illness. <a href="https://twitter.com/DavidColtart/status/1657260955774926848">He wrote</a>:

This is a call to prayer warriors in #Zimbabwe and beyond. Heath Streak, one of the greatest cricketers our nation has ever produced, is extremely ill and needs our prayers. Please could we all be in prayer for him and his family.
</blockquote>
Streak played for and captained the Zimbabwe national cricket team and by his statistical record, he is the best bowler to have played for Zimbabwe.
He is the all-time leading wicket-taker for Zimbabwe in Test cricket with 216 wickets and in ODI cricket with 239 wickets.
Streak retired from international cricket in October 2005 to become captain of Warwickshire County Cricket Club having previously played county cricket for Hampshire in the United Kingdom.
In 2021, Streak was banned for eight years after being charged with multiple breaches of the International Cricket Council (ICC)’s anti-corruption code.
Streak committed the offences during his role as coach of Zimbabwe and various domestic teams around the world.

Zimbabwe Under20 rugby team defeated Kenya’s national U20 rugby team, Chipu, 28-7 on Sunday, to retain the Barthes U20 title and qualify for the Junior World Cup.
The match took place at Nyayo Stadium in Kenya.
The champions started strong, with Edward Sigauke scoring the first try to take a 7-0 lead shortly after kickoff. Simbarashe Kanyangarara added another try moments later, making it 14-0. In rugby, a try is worth five points and is scored by grounding the ball in the in-goal area of the opposing team with downward pressure. The team can then attempt a conversion kick for two additional points.
Kenya’s Laban Kipsang responded with a try, cutting the gap to 14-7. However, Zimbabwe extended their lead to 14 points at halftime after Alex Nyamunda scored a try.
In the second half, Zimbabwe was reduced to 14 men after Zuvunda Gutu received a straight red card, but this did not stop the Young Sables from sealing the win with a late try from Sigauke, who scored twice.
The results mean that both Kenya and Zimbabwe qualified for the World Rugby U20 Trophy. Kenya qualified as hosts, and Zimbabwe secured their spot by winning the Barthes U20 title.
The World Rugby U20 Trophy is scheduled for July 15 in Nairobi, and teams like Scotland, Hong Kong, and Samoa will participate.

The Zimbabwe under-20 rugby team <a href="https://zbcnews.co.zw/2023/04/26/zimbabwe-thump-tunisia-60-6-to-reach-barthes-trophy-final/">advanced</a> to the final of the Barthes Trophy after beating Tunisia 60-6 in a semifinal held at the Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi.
The Young Sables scored ten tries against Tunisia, with winger Edward Sigauke scoring two tries in the first half. In rugby, a try is worth five points and is scored by grounding the ball in the in-goal area of the opposing team with downward pressure. The team can then attempt a conversion kick for two additional points.
Fullback Simbarashe Kanyangarara also scored a try, and Brendon Marume added the conversions for Zimbabwe to take a 22-6 halftime lead.
In the second half, Zimbabwe dominated with 38 unanswered points, led by the midfield duo of Alex Nyamunda and Dion Khumalo. Zimbabwe is the defending champion of the Barthes Trophy. Young Sables Sables coach Shaun De Souza said after the match:

Zimbabwe Under-20 Rugby Team Move Closer To World Cup After Beating Tunisia 60-6

South African broadcaster, DStv, has secured the right to broadcast the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL).
The development gives Zimbabwe’s cricket fans an opportunity to watch local hero Sikandar Raza live in action in the IPL.
According to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/sport/article/200009585/supersport-to-broadcast-razas-ipl-gig">NewsDay</a>, Raza became the fourth Zimbabwean to sign for an IPL side after Tatenda Taibu, Raymond Price, and Brendan Taylor.
The Indian Premier League is a men’s Twenty20 cricket league held annually in India.
On Friday, SuperSport announced that they will broadcast all the matches for this edition of the IPL. It said:

Following updated conversations with the rights holder, DStv can confirm that all Indian Premier League matches in 2023 will be broadcast on SuperSport.
Your World of Champions SuperSport reached a commercial agreement with the rights holders to broadcast the IPL, starting today (yesterday).

All 74 matches of the 16th tournament will be broadcast live. Marc Jury, chief executive of SuperSport, said:

SuperSport Secures Rights To Broadcast Indian Premier League

Former Warriors midfielder, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Alois_Bunjira">Alois Bunjira</a>, has said Zimbabwean female boxer Kudakwashe “Take Money” Chiwandire deserved better treatment from Zimbabweans, especially businesswomen.
Chiwandire is still soul-searching following her defeat by Mexican Yamileth Mercado in a World Boxing Council super-bantamweight title showdown last weekend.
Chiwandire won the crown against Catherine Phiri of Zambia on February 26, 2023, at the Lusaka Government Complex. 
She defended the title and won against challenger Zulina Munoz of Mexico last year before she travelled to Mexico to fight Yamileth Mercado.
Chiwandire is demanding a rematch.
Bunjira who is aspiring to be the president of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) says Chiwandire deserved better treatment, especially from women who always talk about equal opportunities. In a Facebook post seen by Pindula News, Bunjira said:

My heart bled, when our woman boxer, Kuda Chiwandire won the WBC world boxing crown in Zambia. I never saw any women celebrating or honouring her. She cast a lonely figure, until President ED invited her to the State House to reward her, 2 months later. Not even one corporate run by a woman came up with something as an incentive. 
Winning a World Crown is actually a marketing magnate. But with most companies having female marketing directors and executives, not even one came forward to use her for any marketing material. What a lost opportunity! 
Then came the time she was supposed to defend her Silver World Title in Harare. The fight was postponed several times due to a lack of funding. She was on the verge of being stripped of the title. No prominent top business corporates led by women, came forward to assist and bask in the glory …until the government chipped in to save the day, on the 11th hour. She won the fight at HICC. After the fight, all I saw were men in the boxing ring, led by honourable Tino Machakaire, celebrating and pledging incentives for Kuda. The Arena was jam-packed with men and very few women supporting Kuda during the fight.
After defending her silver crown she got the shot to challenge for the Gold World title, in Mexico. Again, she struggled to raise money to fund her trip to Mexico. The trip was almost cancelled and the chance taken away. She finally made it, God knows how, and only arrived in Mexico, a few hours before the title fight. Imagine a transatlantic journey, across 4 different time zones, and arriving a few hours from the fight, fatigue, jet lag and all. But she still gave a good account of herself and lost narrowly on a points decision. How would she have fared if she had trained well, travelled well, arrived a few days before the fight, acclimatized and rested???
After such a gallant fight in Mexico, Kuda Chiwandire arrives quietly back into the country, like nothing ever happened. Were we not supposed to celebrate this woman? Were we not supposed to give her a hero’s welcome at the airport, LIVE on ZTV? Where are the women in all this? Isn’t the ZTV CEO a woman by the way?

Kudakwashe "Take Money" Chiwandire Deserved Better Treatment - Bunjira

Veteran female boxer Monalisa “Queen of the Jungle” Sibanda has promised fireworks ahead of her African Boxing Union (ABU) middleweight title showdown against Mapule Ngubane of South Africa on Saturday.
The Sugarboy Malinga Boxing Stable-promoted bout takes place at the Donga La Boutique Hotel, Ladysmith in KwaZulu Natal.
Sibanda was originally scheduled to fight for the Women’s International Boxing Association lightweight world title against German Alicia Kummer this weekend but that fight has been shelved.
The postponement has paved the way for the Mabvuku-bred fighter to go for the ABU belt against the highly-rated Ngubane.
The 40-year-old said she was eager to win the continental piece which could leave her in a position to challenge for World Boxing Council (WBC) belts given the ABU is a subsidiary of the Number One ranked board on the planet.
Monalisa Sibanda spoke to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/tough-luck-kuda-over-to-you-monalisa/">The Herald</a>:

As you know, I was supposed to be fighting Alicia Kummer of Germany for the WIBA world title this weekend, that fight has been shelved but I am still in it.
But, before I can plunge into that battle, I have an immediate task which is of paramount importance.
I am going to battle it out for the ABU title against Ngubane in South Africa on Saturday. This is a big step in my boxing career and I am looking forward to doing very well in this fight.
I know I stand a very good chance of winning this bout. I have been training very hard eyeing for the WIBA world title so I am in very good shape mentally and physically.
I have been working with different trainers including Kyokushin guru Samson Muripo. I am going to throw everything into this fight.
Remember ABU is a subsidiary of the WBC and I know should I prevail; I stand a very good chance of having a go at the WBC.
I have been a fighter over the past 31 years having been the first female professional boxer in this country and I have always been dreaming of winning the ABU title.
And here is the chance. I am going to do most of the talking the ring on Saturday.

Sibanda’s fight will be the main bout of the eight duels lined up to honour South Africa’s boxing legend Thulani ‘’Sugar Boy’’ Malinga.
The two-time WBC champion’s daughter, Nomfundo, is the brains behind the tournament with the budding promoter saying she wants to honour her father while she is still alive.

Record Olympic medal winner Michael Phelps and Zimbabwe’s <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kirsty_Coventry">Kirsty Coventry</a> are among those to be inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame is an institution honouring the achievements of individuals in a particular activity or field.
Coventry, 39, is an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member who is being talked about as a prospective future candidate for the IOC Presidency.
The seven-time Olympic swimming medallist is the most decorated Olympian in any sport from Africa.
She and Krisztina Egerszegi share the record for the most individual Olympic medals in women’s swimming.
Coventry who is Zimbabwe’s Minister of Youth, Sports, and Recreation, competed in five Olympic Games, from 2000 to 2016, and has won all but one of Zimbabwe’s eight Olympic medals.
She won two Olympic golds after tasting glory in the 200 metres backstroke at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.
The Zimbabwean also won four silvers and one bronze, all in individual events.
She is a four-time world champion and a five-time world record holder, and since 2018 has been serving as Zimbabwe’s Sports Minister.
Coventry was inducted into the Hall of Fame together with American swimming legend, Phelps, <a href="https://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1135049/coventry-phelps-swimming-hall-of-fame">Inside The Games reported</a>. During his swimming career, American legend Phelps swam in five Olympic Games between 2000 and 2016, winning a record total of 28 Olympic medals.
He has 23 gold, three silvers and two bronzes. He could swim any stroke and the 37-year-old set 39 world records in his career, winning 27 world titles.
Others inducted are:
1). Missy Franklin of the United States: retired in 2018 having won four golds and a bronze at the London 2012 Olympics. She set a female record of six world golds the following year.
2). Japan’s Kosuke Kitajima: won the 100 and 200m breaststroke at Athens in 2004 and retained both titles at Beijing in 2008.
3). Cesar Cielo of Brazil: won the Beijing 2008 men’s 50m freestyle title and earned two Olympic bronzes, six world golds and five short-course titles.
4). China’s Wu Minxia: won five Olympic diving golds between Athens in 2004 and Rio in 2016.
5). Trischa Zorn of the US: was blind from birth, becomes the first Paralympian to be recognised. She is the most successful athlete in the history of the Paralympics, having won 55 medals – 41 gold, nine silver and five bronze – between 1980 and 2004. In 2012 she was inducted into the Paralympic Hall of Fame.
6). Bob Bowman and Chris Carver of the US are named in the coaching section.
7). Natalia Ischenko of Russia has been included in the Hall of Fame for artistic swimming.
8). Heather Petri of the US, a member of the victorious team at London 2012 who then added two Olympic silvers and a bronze, as well as three world golds. Honoured from water polo.
9). Stephane LeCat of France is named in the open water category.
10). South Africa’s anti-apartheid campaigner Sam Ramsamy is honoured as a contributor.

Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry Inducted Into The International Swimming Hall Of Fame

A Zimbabwean-born MMA fighter who moved to Britain aged fourteen swapped Zimbabwe for Essex. 
Walter Gahadza, 35, nicknamed ‘The Sniper‘, showcased a sporting talent very early on, excelling in football and sprinting disciplines.
Gahadza is now gunning for the vacant welterweight title, <a href="https://www.essexlive.news/news/essex-news/mma-fighter-swapped-zimbabwe-southend-8237622">Essexlive</a> reported. 
Speaking to the Daily Star, he remembered the early days of his time in the UK. He said:

There were a couple of hurdles. To start with, there was the accent. I came from Zimbabwe to Southend-on-Sea, Essex. I could speak and write English very well.

MMA Fighter Swaps Zimbabwe For Essex

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Stephen_Mudawarima">Stephen Mudawarima</a>, a seasoned sports administrator, has stepped down as chief executive officer and secretary-general of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Olympic_Committee">Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC)</a> after a two-year stint at the national Olympic body.
ZOC president Thabani Gonye confirmed the development in a statement to stakeholders on Wednesday. Read the statement:

Mudawarima Steps Down As Zimbabwe Olympic Committee CEO

Zimbabwean midfielder <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Marvelous_Nakamba">Marvelous Nakamba </a>is talking to some clubs after Aston Villa manager Unai Emery told him to leave the English Premier League side.
The 29-year old Hwange-bred star has struggled for game time at Villa this season and hasn’t featured in a competitive game —a setback which has resulted in his departure from the Birmingham-based club somewhat inevitable.
Last week, Emery openly told Nakamba to leave the club,  and a source close to the soft-spoken star said he is in search of a new team which guarantees him game time.
Said the source:

“He is talking to some clubs.”
“His is strongly mentally and just needs to go to a cub which gives him game time. He is calm about the situation and soon he will be doing what he loves the most, which is to play football.

Nakamba’s contract at Villa ends in 2024.
If he is to leave Villa, the Warriors midfielder has until 31 January (the end of the current transfer window) to find a new home.  
Should there be no suitors for Nakamba while Villa insist on showing him the exit door, the club may pay up his full contract to 2024 and allow him to leave as a free agent.

Ireland beat by 46 runs in a One Day International (ODI) match played at Harare Sports Club on Saturday, to level the series 1-1.
Having won the first ODI in dramatic fashion at the same venue three days ago, Zimbabwe won the toss and stand-in captain <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Sikandar_Raza">Sikandar Raza </a>elected to bow first.
The Chevrons didn’t start well, as scrappy bowling allowed the Irish openers Paul Stirling and Stephen Doheny to race to 47 without loss at the end of the powerplay.
Ireland posted a respectable 294/7 in their allotted 50 overs with Doheny top-scoring with a well-played 84 off 111 deliveries.
Needing 295 to win, Zimbabwe got off to the worst possible start as Tadiwa Marurami was trapped by Joshua Brian Little for a duck in the 3rd over. 
After 7 overs, Zimbabwe were 20-1.
Innocent Kaia and Chamu Chibhabha revived the Zimbabwe innings, before the latter was caught by Graham Hume off the bowling off Andy McBrine for 40 in the 30th over.
Kaia brought up his well-played 50 off 66 deliveries shortly after, before he was dismissed by Josh Litte.
Crowd favorite Raza was next at the crease and scored 21 before he was dismissed by Mark Adair and left the Chevrons at 140-4, needing 155 from the last 20 overs.
It got more complicated for Dave Houghton’s men when Gary Balance was caught by Little off the bowling of Hume for 52 as Zimbabwe crumbled and needed 53 in the last 21 balls.
They fell short and were bowled out for 248 in the 47th over as Ireland levelled the 3-match series 1-1.

Ireland Beat Zimbabwe To Level ODI Series

Zimbabwean star <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Khama_Billiat">Khama Billiat</a>‘s future at Kaizer Chiefs is shrouded in uncertainty, amid revelations that the Soweto giants are reluctant to extend his contract at the club.
The 32-year-old Mufakose-bred winger joined Chiefs from Mamelodi Sundowns in one of the biggest transfers in the South African Premiership, back in June 2018.
Despite being the all-time top scorer amongst the active players in the DStv Premiership with 97 goals, Billiat has been subjected to immense criticism from some Chiefs fans, who argue the diminutive winger has not replicated the form which propelled him to stardom at Sundowns.
His current contract at Amakhosi expires in June this year and a source at the club hinted it might not be renewed. The source said:

Billiat’s Kaizer Chiefs Future In Limbo

Zimbabwe won the third Twenty20 (T20) international series 2-1 after beating Ireland by four (4) wickets in the final match at a packed Harare Sports Club on Sunday.
The match was screened live on national television, ZBCTv.

The series-deciding win is a significant achievement for the Zimbabwean side.
The southern African nation was missing several key players including Sikandar Raza, new man Gary Ballance, Blessing Muzarabani and Sean Williams for varying reasons.
Ireland made 141-9 off their 20 overs and it looked like they were on the way to a famous series win.
However, Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine scored a half-century before Ryan Burl produced some sensational power-hitting at the end.
Ervine’s 54 off 43 deliveries remained in the game for long periods before the momentum appeared to swing back in Ireland’s favour when he was caught by Curtis Campher off the bowling of Mark Adair in the 16th over.
Burl, however, brought Zimbabwe back in control when he hit back-to-back sixes off George Dockrell in the 18th over as he made 30 runs off just 11 balls and the hosts eventually won with six balls to spare.
The sides meet in the first of three One Day International (ODIs) at the same venue on Wednesday.

Lady Chevrons’ assistant coach, Sinikiwe Mpofu has died.
The former national team’s opening batsman collapsed this Saturday, according to <a href="https://zbcnews.co.zw/2023/01/07/lady-chevrons-assistant-coach-sinikiwe-mpofu-dies/">ZBC News</a>.
Her death comes barely a month after that of her husband, Shepherd Makunura.

Meanwhile, former Mighty Warriors striker, Rifaro Machingura is set to be buried on Sunday at Zororo Memorial Park this Sunday.
Machingura, nicknamed Mafidi, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/former-mighty-warriors-striker-rufaro-machingura-dies/">succumbed to kidney failure on Thursday morning</a> at home in Harare.
She was accorded a State-assisted funeral.
Rufaro’s sister, Ms Becky Machingura said the government provided food and transport starting today till tomorrow. She added:

Doves have come on board to take the body to the parlor and bring her home until we bury her at Zororo this Sunday.

Lady Chevrons' Assistant Coach Collapses And Dies

The Zimbabwe Karate Union Nakamura Team has pulled out of the 2023 Asian Championships scheduled to be held in India this month citing financial constraints.
Vice president of Zimbabwe Karate Union, Sensei Tawanda Mufundisi said team Zimbabwe was hoping to do more after leaving a mark at the International friendship Karate Cup in Osaka, Japan last month.
He is quoted by ZBC News as saying:

As ZKU Nakamura, we have realised that it was a noble idea and we had no choice but to pull out of the tournament that we were supposed to participate in India because of financial constraints. The season that we’re in now is going to be busy and it was too late to approach cooperates for assistance financially.
In as much as we have achieved in the fighting season, we felt we haven’t been appreciated enough and we look forward to recognition. Going forward, we are looking forward to participating in regional and international tournaments and we are set to host the grading course which we have done successfully before in grading five black belts. So, we appeal to the cooperate world to assist us in coming events.

Zimbabwean Karatekas Pull Out Of Asian Championships Citing Financial Constraints

Zimbabwe national cricket team fielding coach, Shepherd Makunura, has died.
Makunura, who was also Southern Rocks mentor, passed away at West End Hospital in Harare on Thursday morning. He had been ill for some time.
Makunura missed the International Cricket Council World Cup that was held between October and November due to ill health.
A Zimbabwe Cricket official confirmed Makunura’s death to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/sport/article/200005046/zim-cricket-coach-dies">NewsDay</a> on Thursday morning.
Zimbabwe national cricket team batsman Tadiwanashe Marumani paid tribute to Makunura in a Twitter post. He wrote:

Zimbabwe Cricket Coach Dies

Kenyan world 800m athletics record holder David Rudisha has told local media how he survived after a plane he was travelling in crash-landed on Saturday evening.
The plane which was carrying him and five others came down near a park in Kajiado county in Kenya’s southeast.
The retired Olympic champion told the Daily Nation newspaper: 
<blockquote>
All was well close to seven or eight minutes into the flight when the engine of the plane suddenly went quiet.
</blockquote>
Rudisha described the moment as scary, when one of the plane’s wings hit a tree, spun and landed on a rocky field. Pictures from the scene suggest that the plane also flipped over.
One of the occupants was reportedly being treated in a hospital with injuries after the crash. Others who had minor injuries were taken to the hospital and later discharged.
Rudisha who was reportedly unhurt was on his way back from attending the annual Maasai Olympics event at Kimana Wildlife Sanctuary in Kajiado county.
Rudisha holds the 800m world record he set at the London Olympics in 2012. 
The 2012 and 2016 Olympic 800m champion who last raced internationally five years ago, reportedly said he is considering transitioning into coaching.
He missed time in the last Olympic cycle due to a quad muscle strain, back problems, a car crash and surgery for a broken ankle. He underwent left leg surgery last November.

Kenyan World Athletics Champion Survives Plane Crash

Veteran Zimbabwean golf coach Roger Baylis died on Saturday in Harare aged 84 years.
The country’s top-ranked professional golfer Scott Vincent led the tributes for Baylis yesterday immediately after winning the Asian Tour’s International Series Order of Merit following his top-10 finish at the Indonesia Masters.
The win earned Vincent a permanent place on the lucrative LIV Golf Series for next year and the Zimbabwean star acknowledged he would not have reached such lofty heights without Baylis’ mentorship. He spoke to NewsDay:

I dedicated my (Asian Tour International Series) win to Roger Baylis. He is the reason I get to do what I’m doing.

ZGA president Martin Chikwana described Baylis as a legend of not only the sport of golf but the entire sporting fraternity in Zimbabwe. Chikwana said:

Roger Baylis is an icon and a legend within golf as well as the entire sporting fraternity in general.
His passion for Junior golf development was unparalleled. His commitment to golf administration went beyond measure. He will be fondly missed by all his golfing colleagues and the entire golfing community in Zimbabwe and beyond.

Baylis was born in Gloucester in the west of England in 1938 and only discovered golf at the age of 20.
He moved to Zimbabwe in 1979 to take up the role of professional golfer at Warren Hills Golf Club.
Baylis then moved to Chapman Golf Club in 1986, where he was the head professional until he retired recently.
Baylis helped establish the careers of some of the country’s leading golfers such as the Vincent brothers Scott and Kieran and former US PGA Tour campaigner Brendon de Jonge.
Other names that also come to mind include the likes of Mark Cayeaux, Gary Thompson, Bruce McDonald, Nyasha Mauchaza, Clive Nguru and Ray Badenhorst, as well as top amateurs Keegan Shutt, Tafadzwa and Margaret Nyamukondiwa and David Amm to mention but a few.
In total, Baylis, a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement in Golf award by the Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA), coached over 80 youngsters who subsequently turned professional over a period of 40 years.

Fury was the favourite coming into the fight and a win for the 34-year-old was always predicted.
Many fans on social media wondered how the fight was not stopped earlier – with some concerned for Chisora’s health.
One fan said that Chisora’s corner should have thrown the towel in earlier to protect their boxer – even after just three rounds.
The <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/boxing/article-11499049/Boxing-fans-outraged-Derek-Chisora-allowed-fight-Tyson-Fury.html">Daily Mail</a> quotes one commentator as saying:

A fan pleaded with the referee to ‘stop the fight before Fury kills Chisora,’ with another referring to Del Boy as a ‘walking body bag’.
The fight, which was eventually stopped after 10 rounds, was always predicted to be a mismatch with both fighters at different stages of their respective careers.
Many boxing fans said Fury should not have taken the fight in the build-up with one viewer watching the Gypsy King’s victory over Chisora saying: ‘This is embarrassing from Fury to fight Chisora.’

Zimbabwean professional golfer, Nyasha Muyambo is sitting in position three after day two of the Safari Tour Golf series, Vipingo edition in Kenya, according to the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/muyambo-third-after-second-round-in-safari-tour/">Chronicle</a>.
He won the previous edition of the championship.
Muyambo finished day two tied in third place with senior professional Dismas Indiza with a gross total of 146 points and two over par.
The Zimbabwean ended the first two days with round scores of 75 and 71 while Indiza recorded 74 and 72 to tie up the third position in the prestigious championship. 
Position one on the standings is tied up between Daniel Nduva and Greg Snow, who both have a gross total of 144 points. 
Another Zimbabwean international Robson Chinhoi is tied in position 7 with John Limb with a gross total of 150 points with similar round scores of 77 and 73 at the end of day two.
Another Zimbabwean golfer Visitor Mapwanya who recently won the SeedCo Malawi Open is tied in position 17 with Jastas Madoya and Edwin Mudanyi with a gross total of 155 points and 11 over-par in two days’ play.
The championship continues today for the third round.

The Netherlands sent South Africa crashing out of the Twenty20 World Cup on Sunday with a stunning 13-run victory in Adelaide.
The result also propelled India into the semi-finals.
South Africa started on a jittery note with openers Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma out inside six overs with the score on 39.
