Tongogara Was No Saint, He Made Mistakes Like Every Other Human Being - Political And Social Commentator
While many commentators have been singing their praises to the late ZANLA commander, Josiah Tongogara who died on the eve of the country’s independence, a political and social commentator said that he had his bad side too.
While in Shona culture it is considered bad manners to say ill of the departed, (afa anaka), liberation icons such as Tongogara and Solomon Mujuru were human too, who made their fair share of mistakes. In a series of tweets today, Setfree Mafukidze wrote,
When you see the two war time commanders General Josiah Magama Tongogara and General Solomon Mujuru all you conclude is these two were heroes of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle and yes they were, we are not well informed of how both of them died, their deaths were mysterious.Feedback
We have all been made to believe these two were saints, no-one wants to tell us their own flaws during and after the war. I was close to General Mujuru and he was not an easy man to many, he was tough and at times rough. He had his good side too just like anyone else.
Though I never met General Tongogara contrary to popular belief he was not their saint many would want to potray him today. As an avid follower of my country’s history I have had the opportunity to talk to people who knew and worked with him during the war.
