Civil Servants Not On Strike Per Se, But Cannot Afford To Travel To Work - Apex Council Official
The Apex Council, the umbrella body that represents all civil servants, yesterday met with the acting Minister for Labour and Social Welfare, July Moyo.
Apex Council acting chairperson Thomas Muzondo welcomed the government’s decision to negotiate with its workers but said that civil servants will not able to go to work until the government reviewed their conditions of service. Said Muzondo:
So for now, as government workers, we are not on strike, but you may see some other workers not reporting for work and it is really because of incapacitation and not a strike per se.
FeedbackAt this point in time, we are saying our members are unable to continue with the service. We are not saying they are on industrial action, but they are incapacitated.
They (parents) should send pupils to school; fees have gone up and their (teachers’) salaries are still static. Basic commodities have gone up five or six times, but salaries have remained static over the same period.
Representatives from teachers’ unions also attended the indaba. Meanwhile, doctors have been on strike since December 1, 2018, citing poor working conditions.
