2018/19 Maize Output Set To Reach 900 000 Tonnes
Zimbabwe is expected to harvest 900 000 tonnes of maize this year. This was revealed by the Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union president Wonder Chabikwa.
Chabikwa said that the rains which fell across the country over the past few days have increased prospects of a good harvest. Said Chabikwa:
Though we don’t have the exact figures of the maize output this year, 900,000 tonnes will be attained as most crops in most parts of the country reacted well to the rains, which occurred in the past week.
FeedbackThe preparations were not very good but the rains have not been as bad in January as last year. Various farmers spectacularly recovered from the February rains which improved even the early planted crop.
The country requires about 1,8 million tonnes of maize annually. The projected output for the 2018/19 season means that the country will only be able to meet 50% of its maize requirements.
