Sanctions Are Targeted Against Individuals, US Embassy In Harare Insists

The US Embassy in Harare has insisted that the sanctions against Zimbabwe are targeted only at individuals and that any business not targeted is free to do business with the US.
In a new thread today, following attacks from some Twitter users describing the US Embassy as disingenuous. the US Embassy in Harare said:
#Truth: U.S. targeted sanctions on individuals & entities do not prohibit trade or business btwn the 2 countries. The Embassy encourages & facilitates trade & investment btwn the U.S. & Zimbabwe. $1 billion of goods traded over the past decade.FeedbackZimbabweans are free to sell their goods to the United States and to access American businesses. Targeted sanctions only restricts trade and travel for those who have undermined democracy and human rights.
Implementation of political and economic reforms attracts international business, investment & builds confidence in the new Zimbabwe.

Some Zimbabweans have argued that even though the US government may say the sanctions are targeted, US and other international companies avoid dealing with Zimbabwean businesses as the risk of trading with Zimbabwe increases compliance costs.
