MDC Polls In Masvingo Marred By Violence - Report

A Herald report claims that the MDC’s elections to choose leaders for lower-tier structures ahead of its elective Congress held in Masvingo were marred by violence.

The MDC is said to be roughly divided between party president Nelson Chamisa’s supporters and those who want anyone but Chamisa.

MDC Masvingo Urban District organising secretary Mr Gibson Murinye was reportedly assaulted by party members loyal to the incumbent chair, James Gumbi and forced to flee before polls could take place in Ward 7.

Gumbi is said to be in the anti-Chamisa camp and is being challenged by a former deputy minister, Tongai Matutu.

Speaking to The Herald over the alleged violent incident, Gumbi said:

Our elections went on very well and we are very happy with the way they were held and as for those who allege the polls were in some instances held in people’s homes should know that to convene public meetings there is need for clearance from polling which is cumbersome so if members agree to meet and hold elections at any place of their choice, what is wrong with that?
