Civil Servants Receive $129 Pay Rise
Civil servants have received a pay rise this April after the government honoured its pledge to increase its workers’ salaries by 29 per cent.
The salary increment translates to $129 depending on grades and means that the lowest paid government worker takes home not less than RTGS$600.00.
Reports indicate that another salary hike is expected in the middle of this year.
Nurses, prison officers, soldiers and police officers got their salaries on Monday while teachers will be paid on Wednesday.
The rest of the civil service and pensioners are going to be paid on April 24 and 26 respectively.
Apex Council president, David Dzatsunga on Monday confirmed that they have started receiving their salaries but urged the government to deal with the wanton price hikes. Said Dzatsunga:
We appreciate the Government’s sincerity in honouring the letter and spirit of our agreement.
As we try to make ends meet, it is regrettable that this comes against the backdrop of the resurgence of rampant price increases which are eroding the increase before we do anything.
The situation calls for Government to meaningfully intervene to control the situation or else we are going back to the negotiating table for yet another inflationary salary adjustment.
