MDC Denies Reports Of Tribalism In Its Bulawayo Provincial Structures
MDC party members in Bulawayo province are reportedly unhappy with the nominees for the provincial executives. There are whispers that the new executives lack tribal balance.
The 5th provincial congress brought in James Sithole who beat Phelela Masuku to the post chairperson. The other provincial executive members are Felix Mhaka (vice chair); Ernest Rafamoyo (secretary); a Taranhike (deputy secretary); Helen Zviviri (organiser); Collet Ndhlovu (deputy organiser); Sonny Phiri (treasurer) and Swithen Chiworodza.
MDC spokesperson, Jacob Mafume told the Daily News that there is gender and tribal balance in all party wings, that is, women executive, youth executive as well as main wing. Said Mafume:
We have a cosmopolitan executive that was elected, women executive, youth executive and main wing executive…and there are all-in-all 30 people that were selected.
In all those people there is a healthy balance of gender, tribe and mixed nationalities — people of Malawian origin, with a composition quite cosmopolitan benefiting a city of the status of Bulawayo for there would be a variety of people in its executive from many backgrounds and origins.
Mafume added that the party has not received any rigging complaints from disgruntled party members.
Bulawayo provinces have had issues to do with tribalism in the past. In 2018, deputy mayor Tinashe Kambarami and councillor Arnold Batirai were almost pushed out for allegedly not originally being from the province.
