Kariba Municipality Found Guilty Of Discharging Raw Sewer Into The Lake
Kariba municipality has been fined $2000 for discharging raw sewer into the lake.
THE Kariba Magistrates Court last week found the local authority guilty of violating the Environment Management Act Chapter 20. 27 of 2002 for discharging partially treated sewage into the lake.
The State alleges that the local authority neglected leaking sewer pipes resulting in raw sewer into the lake.
The subnational government pleaded not guilty to the charges but Kariba regional magistrate, Toendepi Zhou, dismissed the plea and ordered them to pay the $2000-00 fine. Zhou added:
In addition, the accused is hereby directed to repair all discharged main holes by the 31 October 2019.
The lake is used as a source of water by both humans and wild animals.
Discharging sewer into the lake, which is a crime under the Environmental Act, therefore, can cause an outbreak of water-borne diseases such as typhoid and cholera.
