Karuru Recalled As Warriors World Cup Bid Hangs By A Thread

Warriors interim coach Joey Antipas has roped in Amazulu forward Ovidy Karuru for the must-win encounter against Somalia in a Qatar 2022 World Cup Qualifier to be played on Tuesday (tomorrow) at the National Sports Stadium.

Karuru is one of the senior players who were overlooked by Antipas when he named the squad for the away leg against Somalia played in Djibouti on Thursday week. The Warriors were beaten 1-0.

Karuru, Knowledge Musona, Edmore Sibanda, Danny Phiri, George Chigova were some of the big names discarded by Antipas at the Zimbabwe Football Association’s (ZIFA) instigation.

ZIFA ordered the axing of the players for allegedly destabilising the Warriors camp at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations held in Egypt a few months ago.

However, with qualification hanging by a thread, ZIFA seems to have eaten humble pie and recalled Karuru who was doubtless one of the most outstanding players at AFCON. Said Antipas:

We are still contemplating on making one or two changes and we will know about that tomorrow. Definitely, we need a change in defence and change in attack.
