ZANU PF Dismisses Christian Denominations' Proposal

The ruling ZANU PF party has rejected calls by Zimbabwean Christian leaders to suspend the holding of elections in the country for seven years to allow for national healing.

Speaking to NewsDay on Wednesday, Zanu PF secretary for administration Obert Mpofu maintained that the government will be guided by the Constitution and not by Christian leaders’ opinions. He said:

We have a Constitution that guides the conduct of elections and the mandate thereof. We have been reading about the view from the churches and it is their entitlement to have their own views. As Zanu PF, we feel there is a need to constantly respect the Constitution.

On Tuesday, the Zimbabwe Heads of Christian Denominations (ZHOCD) proposed a Sabbath, that is, a seven-year period without holding elections.

Some analysts opined that ZHOCD’s proposal was a clear vote of no confidence in President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ability to solve the social and economic crises bedevilling the country.
