Prosecutor Blames Sanctions For Prisons' Failure To Bring Inmates Before The Courts
A public prosecutor in Bulawayo sensationally claimed that prison authorities were failing to bring inmates for trial before the courts because of sanctions.
Jethro Mada was speaking before a magistrate while opposing bail pending sentencing of prominent Bulawayo political activist, Josphat “Mzaca” Ngulube (34) and three co-accused activists after prison authorities failed to bring them to court for sentencing. He said:
Your Worship, the State is incapacitated to bring these convicts to court because of economic sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by the West and its allies of which SADC is rallying behind their removal.
FeedbackHowever, the accused’s lawyers, Nqobani Sithole, of Abammeli Lawyers for Human Rights and Simbarashe Chavaura from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) dismissed the excuse, saying that the State has the capacity to bring them to court.
After magistrate Tinashe Tashaya had ordered the State to fond alternative transport, the four were brought to court and each one of them sentenced to seven years in prison after finding them guilty of burning cars and damaging a ZANU PF official’s property.
One was suspended year on condition that the four will not commit a similar crime within six years.
