ZACC Arrests 101 People In 2019 Over Suspected Corruption
The Zimbabwe Anti Corruption Commission (ZACC) has revealed that it made 101 arrests including 10 prominent people in 2019 alone.
The statistics were revealed by ZACC spokesman, Commissioner John Makamure who told the Herald that the anti-graft body was finalising investigations into some high-profile cases and more arrests were imminent. He said:
Early in the new year, ZACC expects to arraign other high-profile suspects before the criminal justice system. Investigations are at an advanced stage on some of these high-profile cases. I am, however, not at liberty to mention names.
FeedbackFormer Cabinet Ministers, Ignatius Chombo and Priscah Mupfumira a are some of the prominent people who were arrested while Marry Mubaiwa, the estranged wife of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga who is facing charges of attempted murder, fraud, illegal externalisation of funds and money laundering is the latest prominent person to be arrested.
Some analysts have however dismissed ZACC as a “Muppet Show” meant to hoodwink members of the public into believing that President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration was serious about fighting corruption.
They argue that the arrested people are not being convicted thereby relegating the process to “catch and release”. Others even claim that those who are being arrested are merely political victims saying that many government officials should be behind bars if the anti-corruption campaign was a genuine one.
