Japan: "Zimbabwe Is Always Saying We're Doing This, But Never Seen Results."

Japanese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Toshiyuki Iwado has said that Zimbabwe’s reform agenda remained rhetorical with no concrete evidence on the ground to prove the commitment to implement the said reforms.
He said that since 2017 when President Emmerson Mnangagwa took over from Robert Mugabe, there was hope that Zimbabwe would implement reforms most of which would enable Zimbabwe to reengage the international community.
Iwado said that, unfortunately, results are disappointing. Speaking to Zimbabwe Independent, he said:
I do not know the details of what is going on here, but unfortunately, the words coming out of his (Mnangagwa) mouth have not been realised in a very smooth way. Now that euphoria is gone. Without knowing the reality, without transparency, how can one tackle corruption?
After my two years in Zimbabwe, my question always is, government is always saying we are doing this, we are doing that. But I have never seen the results. My comment is, we are frustrated because we cannot see the change.

Iwado’s remarks resonate with those of other Western states who have also questioned Zimbabwe’s commitment to implement the reforms which include electoral reforms, legislative reforms and media reforms which are said to have a huge bearing on human rights.
