We Won't Pretend To Be Teaching When We Are Not - Rural Teachers
The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) president, Obert Masaraure, said teachers will not pretend to be teaching when they are not, and will only teach when “the conditions are right”.
Masaraure bemoaned the paltry salaries being earned by Zimbabwean teachers, a situation that has demotivated the country’s educators resulting in a fall in the 2019 Grade 7 pass rate. He said:
The teachers are earning (equivalent) US$30 per month, which is not enough to cater for the education of their dependants, food, shelter, health care and even transport to work.
FeedbackWe will not pretend to be teaching when we are not, we cannot hazard the future of innocent children by giving them substandard education, we will teach when the conditions are right.
When the results were announced last month, the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) board chair Eddie Mwenje revealed that the 2019 national pass rate was 46.9 per cent down from 2018’s 52.08 per cent.
