Govt Targets Producing 8 000 Passports Per Day
The government has committed more resources to the Registrar-general’s department to increase the production of passports to 8 000 per day from the current 2 500 to clear the huge backlog.
This was said by the Minister for Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Kazembe Kazembe who was speaking after a familiarisation tour of the passport production plant at the Josiah Magama Tongogara Barracks in Harare on Wednesday. He said:
As a ministry, we remain committed to ensuring that every citizen who needs a passport gets one without hurdles.
FeedbackIn this respect, the Government has committed resources for the purchasing of consumables so that we clear the backlog in the first half of the year.
If we are to meet our targets, we need to up our production from the current 2 500 to 8 000 a day. For this vision and thrust to be a success, you have to work extra hard in meeting the targets.
Zimbabwe currently has a huge passport backlog as the production of the travel documents has been crippled by the unavailability of foreign currency.
As of December 12, 2019, the passport backlog stood at 359 288 backdating to August 2018.
