ED Orders Investigation "Into Those Behind Fake Statement" Purporting He Extended Lockdown
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has ordered an investigation of a fake statement which circulated on social media which suggested that he had extended the national lockdown.
Zimbabwe is currently on a 21-day lockdown which was imposed to curb the spread and transmission of coronavirus. Speaking on the bogus statement, Mnangagwa said:
I am supposed to make an official statement if we are going to extend (the lockdown). I have never made such a statement and that social media statement is absolute nonsense. We now have a law which punishes those who produce fake news and I have ordered an investigation into those behind the fake statement and if found, we want the person to be an example and get up to 20 years in prison. It’s bad to peddle falsehoods, especially about a President.
FeedbackThe country recently gazetted a Statutory Instrument under the Public Health Act section 68 which criminalises the peddling of falsehoods on coronavirus and categorises such as the highest offence in the country that attracts a jail term of 20 years.
He said that the extension or lifting of the lockdown shall be done after considering the situation.
