Mnangagwa Rejects Calls For GNU
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has rejected calls to form a government of national unity (GNU) with the opposition MDC to help deal with the country’s perennial economic problems.
George Charamba, who is the Deputy Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet (Presidential Communications) said it was implausible for Mnangagwa to form a GNU, as was recently suggested by respected liberation stalwart Tshinga Dube because the MDC has no leader at the moment and also because the country is close to the 2023 elections. He said:
We are aware that there are some western countries, in the wake of the troubles in the MDC, that have sought to get Zanu PF to help MDC put out its fire by creating a sideshow.
FeedbackI don’t think Cde Tshinga is a sharer of that thinking. That is the enemy’s thinking and it does not need to enlist the support of Zimbabweans, let alone those of the calibre of Cde Dube.
The simple answer is that the advice sits so oddly on the circumstances of the country and for that reason, it is rejected.
During an interview with the Daily News on Monday, Dube, who is a former War Veterans minister and known supporter of Mnangagwa, said Zimbabwe needs another GNU, modelled after the 2009-2013 arrangement to work on the country’s dire economic situation.
Churches have also been calling for inclusive national dialogue as a panacea to the country’s myriad of challenges.
