SADC Urges Member States Deal With Social Media Abuse

The 40th Ordinary Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) was held virtually on the 17th August 2020 and was hosted by Mozambique.

In its Communique, Summit encouraged Member States to actively take measures to prevent external interference in their domestic affairs and also to combat the effects of “fake news” and the misuse of social media platforms, especially during elections. The communique read in part:

Summit urged Member States to take pro-active measures to mitigate external interference, the impact of fake news and the abuse of social media, especially in electoral processes.
