Amnesty International Calls For Investigation Into Brutality Against Civilians In Mozambique

Amnesty International, a human rights watchdog, has called for thorough investigation into the shooting and killing of a pregnant woman in Northern Mozambique by several men in military uniform.

The government has blamed the shooting on armed rebels but in the video, soldiers accuse the woman of being part of a rebel group.

David Matsinhe, from Amnesty International, said this is not the first incident of this nature.

If we want to clear all the questions and doubts over who is actually responsible for these atrocities, an independent, open, and transparent investigation is required.

He added that residents in Cabo Delgado, the northernmost province of Mozambique, told Amnesty International that over 3000 people are forced to flee their homes to escape insurgents who are burning villages and attacking them as well as from the police and Mozambiquan army.

The human rights watchdog is asking for the Mozambiquan government as well as the international community to intervene to help people access basic services.

Meanwhile, some SADC member states including South Africa have pledged to support Mozambique in the fight against Islamic insurgency that has left many dead and or displaced.
