Mwonzora Calls For South Africa's Mediation In Zimbabwean Crises

MDC-T secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora has concurred with MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa that there is a crisis in Zimbabwe and that South African mediation is needed to bring positive change in the country.

Speaking during an interview with Business Times, Mwonzora condemned the ruling ZANU PF party for blocking South Africa from playing a mediatorial role in Zimbabwe, saying South Africa has a right to interfere since it is directly affected by the crisis in its neighbour. He said:

There is no question that we have a crisis in this country. We have a crisis of the economy, we have a crisis of corruption, the social crisis—poverty and the crisis of contested legitimacy.

Every time after elections, there is a contest on legitimacy and so on. We have a crisis that needs the help of our neighbours and we think that the coming in of South Africa is a very good initiative.

It is part of the African diplomacy by a neighbour who is affected when something wrong happens in Zimbabwe.

Mwonzora added that Zimbabwe should be grateful for having a neighbour that shows concern over the debilitating corruption and poverty in the country.

Chamisa has consistently refused to accept Mnangagwa’s legitimacy since the contested 2018 presidential election and has called for electoral reforms to prevent such disputes from recurring.
