Mwonzora Hints By-Elections Won't Be Held In 2020
The reinstated MDC-T secretary-general, Douglas Mwonzora has hinted that the country will not be holding by-elections to fill vacant Parliamentary and council seats.
Senator Mwonzora told the media on Monday that the MDC-T was not yet conducting primaries because no-one knew dates for by-elections yet adding that there was a possibility they would not be held this year.
He said perhaps Zanu PF and MDC Alliance who have already started the process of selecting candidates to replace officials recalled by the MDC-T knew the dates. He added:
Maybe they know the date of the by-elections. We do not and when we know the dates, we will do our things.
Unlike Zanu PF, unlike the MDC Alliance, we are preparing for an extraordinary congress and because of that, we do not want to mix the two processes.
We do not think elections will be held this year because of the operation of the statutory instrument and, therefore, we are concentrating on our congress.
Mwonzora, however, indicated that his party was are ready for those by-elections adding that those who think the party will be embarrassed will be disillusioned as MDC-T is a “party that is solid” and “strategic.”
