President Emmerson Mnangagwa and opposition MDC Alliance president Nelson Chamisa have expressed their condolences on the passing away of Tanzanian President John Magufuli.

Magufuli’s death was announced by the country’s Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan in a televised address to the nation late on Wednesday.

Hassan said the 61-year-old president had died of a “heart condition” in Dar es Salaam.

In a statement on Twitter, President Mnangagwa said:

My deepest condolences to the family of His Excellency President John Magufuli and the people of Tanzania. Africa mourns with you. May his soul rest in peace.

Chamisa also took to Twitter to express his sorrow over Magufuli’s death. He wrote:

With sadness, I note the passing on of H.E @MagufuliJP of Tanzania. My sincere condolences to the Magufuli family and the great people of Tanzania.

Our prayers are with them all during this difficult time. Wishing Tanzania a democratic and peaceful transition. RIP Mzee.
