"Nelson Chamisa Is Popular Because Of Actions Of ZANU PF's Old Guard"
Former Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Energy Mutodi, has said Nelson Chamisa, leader of opposition Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) is gaining popularity because of the actions of the ruling ZANU PF’s old guard.
Mutodi said the ZANU PF old guard is fighting its young men and women. He said:
Nelson Chamisa is gaining popularity because the ZANU PF old guard is fighting its own young men & women. My passionate plea is for ZANU PF to embrace its young people, take in new ideas and remain in power beyond 2023.
There have been factional wars in the ruling party since around 2014 when succession wars became clearly defined in the party.
In 2017, the Lacoste Faction allegedly led by then-Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa had intense fights with the vanquished Generation 40 (G40) as they wrangled to succeed the late founding leader of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe.
Most of the G40 members are now in exile after skipping the country’s borders in 2017 when Mugabe was ousted fearing retribution from Mnangagwa.
There have been reports that G40 members are plotting a comeback with former Local Government Minister, Saviour Kasukuwere, explicitly showing interest in the presidency.
Meanwhile, Chamisa (44) is gaining popularity even in former ZANU PF strongholds, a development that has reportedly shaken the ruling party.
