SADC Should Respond To Intensified Crackdown On Opposition In Zimbabwe - Human Rights Watch

Human Rights Watch has called on the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to speak out against the intensified crackdown on the opposition and civil society organizations by Zimbabwean authorities, ahead of the regional bloc’s upcoming summit in Harare.

According to the rights group, since assuming power in a military coup in 2017, President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government has committed serious human rights violations and demonstrated a failure or unwillingness to institute lasting human rights reforms.

Opposition members and civil society activists have borne the brunt of violence, intimidation, harassment, and repression, which appears aimed at restricting civic and political space in the country.

The past year, in particular, has witnessed the abduction and torture of several activists, as well as the weaponisation of the criminal justice system against the ruling party’s political opponents.

Human Rights Watch has urged SADC to use the Harare summit as an opportunity to address the deteriorating human rights situation in Zimbabwe and press the Mnangagwa government to end its crackdown on dissent and uphold fundamental freedoms.

Opposition politicians have been held in prolonged pretrial detention or convicted on baseless, seemingly politically motivated charges. Said Allan Ngari, Africa advocacy director at Human Rights Watch:

The government of President Mnangagwa is accelerating its crackdown against legitimate and peaceful activism ahead of the August summit.

The Southern African Development Community needs to engage with the authorities to take clear measures to ensure the enjoyment of basic freedoms by all Zimbabweans.

SADC should promote respect for human rights by calling upon Zimbabwe’s government to end repression and the arbitrary arrests and prosecutions of activists and opposition supporters.

The pervasive climate of intimidation and repression needs to end.

The heads of state of SADC’s 16 members are scheduled to convene for their 44th regional summit on August 17, 2024, in Harare.

At this gathering, Mnangagwa is poised to assume the chairmanship of the sub-regional organisation.

We're fed up of hearing that SADC does not interfere with member states' internal affairs. The policy must change where SADC principles are breached. What's the point of its existence if it can't whip rogue members into line? Abusive dictatorships like Zimbabwe don't even bother to deny their conduct. They simply say that SADC does not interfere with sovereign states' internal issues and carry on or even raise the level of abuse of citizens. They must learn from from ECOWAS.

It's not only SADC, it goes to AU, then UN. This crisis has been going on since Mbeki was appointed a point man. What was the conclusion? You can not start an issue and pretend not to finish it.ECOWAS of late also suffered when coup detat started spreading out of control that side. In Short the young African generation is on its own. The old madalas are saying pick up guns and shoot us if you want a free developing Africa.

Zimbabweans should protest at the new parliament building in Mt Hampden to disrupt their meeting so that they would listen to our grievances.

Sadc is now a joke ,how can it cede the chairmanship of this once respected organization to someone who doesn't respect his own country's constitution and whose citizens are being victimized daily, and the Sadc leaders expect to trust and be led by such . Sadc is now a playground of ruthless people.

Many, non aligned movements, Sadc, AU chair, etc, But this is just the chance the current president has to seat the helms of the regionalblock, so this thing of brewing up protests is BETRAYAL, and treasonous, He needs our support but sick minds have sick thinking about this once in a lifetime opportunity

Ok I see if it were for all our interests it was going to be marvelous. Unfortunately people believe only ZANU PF will be represented. But if he is sure he will set aside partisan issues and aligning his corrupt friends and business partners to respect Zimbabwe and National 3 security to do thingd by book not abuse human rights so as stopping victimizing innocent people then that will be great
