Man Loses US$2,300 To Robbers After Boarding Mushikashika In Harare

A 40-year-old man from Masvingo was robbed of US$2,300 after boarding a pirate taxi, known as a “Mushikashika,” in Harare on Wednesday.

Luckmore Mudzamiri, from Rhodhine in Masvingo, was heading to his brother’s house in Ruwa when he boarded a silver Toyota Aqua at the Simon Muzenda Street commuter rank.

The vehicle already had four occupants and Mudzamiri sat in the back seat between two of the men who later turned out to be armed robbers.

As the vehicle neared an intersection close to Eastlea, one of the robbers pulled out a screwdriver, while the other pressed a knife to Mudzamiri’s neck and ordered him to hand over his belongings.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Harare Province, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the robbery. He said:

Police are investigating an armed robbery case involving a Mushikashika vehicle.

The accused persons forced the complainant to surrender his belongings, satchel containing toiletries, defensive certificate, national ID, two Itel cellphones and US$2 160.

The accused persons later dumped the complainant along Hillside Extension and drove off. Total value stolen is US$2300.

The ZRP has in the past warned commuters not to board pirate taxis, as they face risks such as robbery, sexual assault, and even death.
