President Mnangagwa Hints On By-elections
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has signalled that the holding of by-elections could be imminent as he called on Zanu PF to get prepared while observing World Health Organisation (WHO) safety guidelines on COVID-19.
Mnangagwa on Wednesday told his Zanu PF party politburo members that they should leave nothing to chance in ensuring victory in the upcoming by-elections and 2023 harmonised elections. He said:
Preparations for by-elections must be conducted within the confines of internal democratic practices and provisions of our party constitution, while at the same time observing WHO protocols.
FeedbackThe Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) and Vice-President and Health minister Constantino Chiwenga suspended elections last year citing coronavirus fears.
The country’s main opposition party, the MDC Alliance and independent electoral watchdogs and stakeholders have been pressuring the government and electoral officials to lift the ban on elections so that by-elections for dozens of parliamentary seats can be held.
