The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) has extended the registration period for November 2022 Grade 7, Ordinary and Advanced Level candidates to 5 August.
ZIMSEC had initially set the registration window between July 22 and 29 but school authorities struggled to register candidates yesterday after the ZIMSEC system reportedly stopped accepting new entries on Thursday night.
In an interview with State media, ZIMSEC spokesperson Nicky Dlamini said the system failure was a security measure.
She added that when the system reopens, payments done in local currency will be pegged at the exchange rate of $488 to US$1 (during the previous window the rate was US$1:$455). Said Dlamini:

As we speak I am sending out communication that we have opened up a new window from the 1st to the 5th of August.
Those who are still to make payments can use that window and this period is for payment and registration and centres must not close now.
For those who will pay in local currency, the rate will be $488 to US$1.
… The system does that. It’s a security measure and when it reopens the new rate will apply.

Grade 7 learners will pay US$10 for all subjects, while O and A Level students are paying US$11 and US$22 for the first seven and three subjects per subject, respectively, following a 55% government subsidy for public, local authority and not-for-profit mission schools.
O and A Level students will pay the full amounts of US$24 and US$48 for each extra subject thereafter.

ZIMSEC Extends Examinations Registration Deadline

Educators have pleaded with the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) to extend the examinations registration deadline amid reports that thousands of parents and guardians are struggling to raise the fees.
ZIMSEC opened registration for Grade 7, Ordinary and Advanced Level examinations for this year from July 22 to 29.
Zimbabwe National Union of School Heads secretary-general Munyaradzi Majoni on Wednesday told NewsDay that thousands of pupils may fail to write examinations this year if ZIMSEC sticks to the Friday deadline. He said:

The situation is dire as parents are failing to afford the fees. There is a need for ZIMSEC to be considerate and extend the deadline.
That is one possible solution since the cry for the fees to be reduced was not taken heed of.
The prevailing economic environment has affected consumer spending and parents are struggling to make ends meet, let alone raise the thousands of dollars required for a child to register for the examinations.
Some candidates had not yet paid their fees and schools are demanding that they clear their fees first before they can be able to register, which makes the situation even more complicated for those parents who are rushing to meet the deadline.

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) president Takavafira Zhou concurred with Majoni on the need to extend the registration deadline. Said Zhou:

There is no need to rush with the registration deadline. Pupils need at least a month for them to secure the funds that are required. The exam fees are exorbitant and beyond affordability.
According to a random survey that we have conducted, about half of the eligible registrants had not yet managed to register by yesterday and the chances that the other half will raise the funds in two days are slim.
It is clear that if the examination board sticks to its initial deadline many pupils will be left out.
We are seeing parents who are forking out up to $83 000 for their children to register more than the seven subjects that are subsidised and it’s beyond the affordability of many.

The ZIMSEC examination fees are payable in United States dollars or the equivalent in Zimbabwe dollars at a rate of US$1:$455.

Thousands Of Learners Failing To Pay ZIMSEC Exam Fees - Teachers

Teachers’ unions have called for the extension of the 2022 Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) examinations registration deadline which opened from 22 to 29 July.
This comes amid reports that thousands of learners may fail to sit for the examinations because parents and guardians throughout the country have failed to raise the registration fees.
Some schools are reportedly demanding payment exclusively in United States dollars, claiming that they do not have swipe machines or other RTGS payment facilities.
Others had set their own deadline of 27 July because they needed time to reconcile all the payments, including those that were made via bank transfers.
ZIMSEC spokesperson Nicholette Dlamini said an extension of the deadline will be considered based on the recommendations from the reports submitted by the examination centres. She said:

ZIMSEC deadlines are set with the belief that parents and guardians will meet the deadlines.
After the set deadlines, reports will be submitted from centres along with recommendations which will inform ZIMSEC in order to make decisions pertaining to the registration window without prejudice to the candidates.

Teachers Urge ZIMSEC To Extend Exam Registration Deadline

The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) has announced the examination fees for the 2022 Grade Six, Grade Seven, Ordinary Level and Advanced Level candidates.
The Government will subside examination fees by 55% for candidates in Public schools, Local Authority schools and not for profit Mission Schools.
All candidates in private schools and colleges, including private candidates in public schools, will pay the full cost of the examination fees. ZIMSEC said in a statement:

The 2022 examination fees are pegged against the USD. However, parents and guardians are advised to pay the fees at the prevailing interbank rate, as of 22 July 2022, which will be communicated by ZIMSEC to all centres.
Payments in USD are not to be made or accepted by school/centre heads. Parents and Guardians must make payments at their respective centres during the period 22 July to 29 July 2022.

ZIMSEC urged parents and/or guardians as well as candidates to take heed of the registration period of 22 July to 29 July 2022 and the closing dates that will be given to them by their respective school or centre to avoid inconveniences. ZIMSEC said:

No payments should be made directly into the ZIMSEC account by Parents/ Guardians, centres are requested not to allow individual candidates to make their own deposits into the ZIMSEC Account.
There will be no late registration for November 2022 examinations.

ZIMSEC Announces Examination Fees... In United States Dollars

The Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) has appealed to the Government to intervene and reduce the recently-announced Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (ZIMSEC) examination fees.
PTUZ secretary-general Raymond Majongwe argued that the examination fees are unaffordable to the majority of parents and guardians.
According to a circular from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Grade 7 candidates will pay $4 388 while the government will pay the other $5 362, giving a total of $9 750.
Ordinary Level candidates will pay $1 620 while the government will pay $1 980 per subject, giving a total of $3 600.
Advanced Level candidates will now pay $3 240 while the government will pay $3 960, giving a total of $7 200.
In 2021, O’ Level candidates paid $742 per subject while A’ Level candidates paid $1 080 per subject.
In a letter dated 10 May 2022, addressed to the Primary and Secondary Education ministry and copied to the Office of the President and Cabinet, the Finance ministry and ZIMSEC, Majongwe said:

While in theory, the figures may look minuscule given the loss in the value of the Zim dollar, it should not make us lose sight of the egregious fact that these figures are still not affordable to the generality of the candidates and their funders.
You may be aware of the figures we produced last week, which indicate the unfortunate and shocking statistic that the ZIMSEC O’ Level candidature has been falling by steep levels since 2017, from a high of 332 473 in November 2017, to a low of 163 179 in 2021, a mind-blowing 51%.
The conclusion that can be drawn from this is that more and more learners are dropping from school as a result of endemic poverty pervading society.
</blockquote>
Primary and Secondary Education ministry spokesperson Taungana Ndoro referred all questions from NewsDay to ZIMSEC spokesperson Nicholette Dlamini.
Dlamini said she had not seen the letter from PTUZ and that ZIMSEC has not yet set examination fees for 2022.
However, Majongwe said school heads had already ordered pupils to start paying the examination fees based on the circular of the proposed fee structure.
