The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has said about 70% of domestic expenditure is in US dollars.
This was announced by RBZ Governor John Mangudya in the 2023 Monetary Policy Statement seen by Pindula News.
Mangudya also said as of December 31, 2022, the Foreign Currency Accounts (FCA) deposits in the banking system accounted for 64.2% of total deposits, with the remainder being ZW$ deposits. Said Mangudya:

Transactional activities in the retail and wholesale sectors also points to the same structure of currency composition as shown by recent Confederation of Zimbabwe Industry (CZI) surveys, which reported that on average USD sales contribute 66% to foreign currency generation for the businesses. The dual currency structure of the economy is corroborated by estimates by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat) at Classification of Individual Consumption by Purpose (COICOP) division level.

Mangudya also noted that domestic inflation reflects the significant foreign currency inflows in the economy by adopting blended inflation as the country’s reference inflation and reflects the dual currency structure for the following reasons:
<blockquote>
1). Total forex receipts at US$11.6 billion in 2022 were the highest FX inflows ever received in the country.
2). About 70% of domestic expenditure is in US dollars; and
3). Foreign currency deposits and loans constitute about 65% of total banking sector deposits.

The central bank also said the inflation developments largely reflect movements in the exchange rate as prices in USD have been relatively stable and, in some instances, declining.

Mangudya said this points to the need to sustain exchange rate stability to anchor inflation expectations and stabilize prices under the dual currency environment.
The Zimbabwean economy has been informally re-dollarising in recent years as the local currency has continued to <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/rbz-forex-auction-31-01-2023-zimbabwe-dollar-continues-to-lose-value-against-usd/">shed value against other currencies,</a> mainly the USD.

RBZ: 70% Of Domestic Expenditure Is In US Dollars

The Zimbabwe dollar lost further ground against the US dollar at the foreign currency auction conducted by the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Reserve_Bank_of_Zimbabwe">Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)</a> on 31 January 2023.
The RBZ forex auction weighted average rate moved to US$1: ZWL$801.6023 on 31 January 2023, from the US$1: ZWL$779.3101 that was set <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2023/01/24/rbz-forex-auction-zimbabwe-dollar-official-rate-as-of-24-january-2023/">on 24 January 2023.</a>
The central bank said a total of US$18,295,674.52 was allotted today, up from US$13,863,114.02 , which was allotted last week.
The bulk of the allotment went to raw materials followed by machinery and equipment.
The total amount allotted for the Small to Medium Enterprises Forex Auction (SMEFX122/2023) was  US$1,837,006.31 up from US$1,515,043.86.
The total amount allotted on the Main Forex Auction (MAIN FX128/2023) was US$16,458,668.21 up from US$12,348,070.16.

RBZ Forex Auction 31/01/2023: Zimbabwe Dollar Continues To Lose Value Against USD

The Zimbabwe dollar (ZWL$) continues to lose value against the US dollar as indicated by the results of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) foreign currency (forex) auction conducted on Tuesday, 28 September 2021.
Last week the weighted average was US$1: ZWL$86.9267 and fell to US$1: ZWL$87.6653 this week.
This week, US$9.4 million was allocated to the Small to Medium Enterprises forex auction while US$32 million was allocated to the main forex auction.
In total, US$41.1 million was allotted this week, with the bulk of the allotment going to raw materials followed by machinery and equipment.
1236 bids were received on the Small to Medium enterprises forex auction, with 1180 accepted and 56 disqualified.
On the main forex auction, a total of 450 bids were received, 428 were accepted while 22 were disqualified.
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Reserve_Bank_of_Zimbabwe">The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)</a> said bids that were disqualified were not eligible in terms of the Priority List.
Bids with overdue CDIs, outstanding Bills of Entry (BOEs), and those with sufficient FCA balances were also disqualified.
Some bids were allotted on a pro-rata basis to conform with the Import Priority List, the RBZ said.

The Zimbabwe dollar has continued to lose its ground against the US dollar at the forex auction system conducted on Tuesday, 25 August 2020.
The local currency slumped marginally again this week from ZWL$82.9184 last week to ZWL$83.3994 this week to the United States Dollar.
