The CEO of the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE), Justin Bgoni, has stated that companies listed on the exchange can choose to prepare their financial statements in US dollars. This is due to the US dollar’s prominent role in the country’s economy. However, such a switch would require approval from the directors and shareholders of the companies. Justin Bgoni said:

It’s a multi-currency environment, so they can report in US dollars.

Recently, Zimbabwe <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/10/27/zimbabwe-has-allowed-the-use-of-foreign-currency-until-2030/">extended the use of the US dollar as legal tender until 2030</a>. The authorities believe that this move will provide policy certainty to the market, which has been disrupted by changes to currency regulations in the past. The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2019/06/24/breaking-rbz-si-142-bans-use-of-all-foreign-currencies-with-effect-from-24-june-2019/">Zimbabwe dollar was reintroduced in 2019</a> after a decade-long hiatus, but bouts of instability have meant that most citizens try to avoid using it for payments.
Companies in Zimbabwe have had to grapple with a volatile exchange rate and a widening gap between the official and parallel market value of the currency.<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/11/07/zimbabwe-dollar-official-rate-moves-to-5-738-per-us1/"> The Zimbabwe dollar has weakened by 89%</a> against the US dollar on the official market so far this year. As a result, many companies listed on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE) are opting to switch to reporting their financial statements in US dollars.
For instance, Proplastics recently reported its half-year results in US dollars, while Delta, the country’s biggest beverage company, announced during a recent analyst briefing that it is considering switching to US dollar results for its full-year report. Delta highlighted that more than 80% of its revenue is in US dollars.
Other companies, such as property company Masholand Holdings and Dairibord, the country’s largest dairy producer, have already presented their most recent trading updates in US dollars, according to <a href="https://newzwire.live/zse-says-listed-companies-are-free-to-report-results-in-usd/">newZWire</a>. Dairibord stated that 93% of its sales in the quarter ending in September were in USD, a significant increase from the average of 39% in the first half of the previous year. This shift to reporting in US dollars is seen as a response to the instability and uncertainty surrounding the Zimbabwe dollar.
Given the prevalence of the US dollar in the economy and the benefits of using a stable and widely accepted currency, companies are finding it more prudent to report in US dollars. It not only provides transparency and consistency but also helps them navigate the challenges posed by the fluctuating exchange rate.
According to Imara Asset Management, using US dollars for company earnings will provide investors with a clearer understanding of true profitability. The brokerage, which oversees more than US$100 million, believes that reporting in Zimbabwe dollars can hide financial issues and give a misleading impression of profitability. 
Furthermore, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe reports that nearly all bank loans, approximately 94%, are now in USD. This shift occurred as authorities aimed to limit the circulation of Zimbabwe dollars in order to control inflation. The increased use of the US dollar for sales, loans, and financial reporting reflects the preference for a more stable and widely accepted currency in Zimbabwe’s business environment.

Zimbabwe Stock Exchange Companies Allowed To Prepare Financial Statements In US dollars

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Stock_Exchange">Zimbabwe Stock Exchange</a> chief executive officer Mr <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Justin_Bgoni">Justin Bgoni</a> says the Government could make Victoria Falls a Zimbabwean “Hong Kong” and transform it into a magnet for capital.
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Justin_Bgoni">Bgoni</a> made the remarks while speaking at the Zimbabwe Economic Development Conference (ZEDCON) in Victoria Falls last week.
<a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/vic-falls-vfex-can-be-magnet-for-capital">The Sunday Mail</a> quotes him as saying this can be achieved with:

i). the Government taking a leading role in listing financial instruments on the exchanges.
ii). the Government issuing Bonds and Treasury Bills on the Victoria Falls Stock Exchange (VFEX).
iii). the Government encouraging State-owned enterprises to list on the US dollar-denominated exchange, subsequently making it a vibrant exchange. 
iv) the Government offering tax incentives to list on the Victoria Falls Stock Exchange (VFEX). 
v). establishment of Treasury companies and funds in the offshore centre.
vi). automatic prescribed asset status for Zimbabwean infrastructure projects listed on VFEX

He cited Hong Kong Stock Exchange (SEHK) as an example that boasts 96 China state-owned enterprises and 50 have at least one subsidiary listed on that stock exchange.
Bgoni said Victoria Falls could be turned into a vibrant capital markets hub critical in funding the country’s growth through resourcing the Victoria Falls Offshore Centre as well as issuing rules that include low exchange controls and foreign ownership.
Bgoni maintained that capital markets are part of the financial markets which connect the real sectors of the economy to the providers of capital.

The Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE) has lifted the suspension that had been imposed on the Trading of CFI Holdings Limited (“CFI”) Shares. ZSE Chief Executive Justin Bgoni said trading in the securities of CFI was suspended on 2 January 2018 for failure to comply with the free float requirements and some corporate governance-related matters under the ZSE Listing Requirements. Reads the statement:

Statement by the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange Limited (ZSE) on the Lifting of Suspension in the Trading of CFI Holdings Limited (“CFI”) Shares.
The Zimbabwe Stock Exchange Limited (“ZSE”) hereby notifies the investing public of the lifting of suspension in the trading of CFI securities. Trading in the securities of CFI will commence on Monday, 11 October 2021. 
Trading in the securities of CFI was suspended on 2 January 2018 for failure to comply with the free float requirements and some corporate governance-related matters under the ZSE Listing Requirements. 
The ZSE is satisfied that CFI has regularised its corporate governance shortcomings as required under the listing requirements. Whilst the issue of the free float remains unresolved, the ZSE has given CFI a moratorium of five (5) years to address the free float requirements. 
The ZSE will be reviewing progress on regularisation of this requirement on an annual basis. During the subsistence of its suspension, CFI demonstrated commitment to its listing on the ZSE by ensuring timely compliance with its continuing listing obligations and reporting cycles.

ZSE Lifts Suspension On Trading Of CFI Holdings Limited Shares

Zimbabwe Stock exchange has released a statement which confirms that there will be no trading today following the government’s decision to suspend trading at the stock exchange as the government said they needed to investigate illegal activities on the foreign currency parallel market.
In the statement, ZSE said they will communicate if anything changes but for now trading is suspended until further notice.
<blockquote>Following the statement issued by the Secretary for Information. Publicity and Broadcasting Services on 26 June 2020, the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange Limited (ZSE) engaged both the Securities and Exchange Commission of Zimbabwe (SECZ) and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development.

FULL TEXT: ZSE Confirms Trading Is Suspended Until Further Notice

The Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE) has appointed Justin Bgoni as its new chief executive officer. 
Bgoni replaces Mr Alban Chirume who was sent on forced leave in 2017. Chirume was subsequently suspended after various charges were laid against him by the ZSE board. The charges included unprocedural and unethical conduct allegedly committed over a period of time. Bongi’s appointment is with effect from 13 March.
Bgoni is a chartered accounted by profession, with over 19 years of international experience in the international and public sector. He was once the chief financial officer at the New Zealand Stock Exchange.
