The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) said all banknotes that were issued since 2016 are still legal tender.
The statement is issued when some retailers have started rejecting $10 banknotes following the issuance of the $50 banknote.

Zimbabwe basket of local currency notes consists of the 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50-dollar bills. The $2 and $5 banknotes disappeared a long time ago as the market rejected them for bigger denominations. The central bank said in a statement:
<blockquote>The Bank would like to advise the public that all banknotes issued by RBZ since 2016 are legal tender in Zimbabwe. Traders who reject such notes should be reported to the Financial Intelligence Unit on hotline numbers 0714039897 or 0780434475.</blockquote>
Smaller denominations were ditched mainly because inflation was soaring.
Some fear that the recent hike in civil servants’ salaries will trigger a price hike that will render other denominations useless.
However, economic experts allay the fears saying there is not going to be an increase in money supply to support price increase.

All Banknotes Issued Since 2016 Still Legal Tender - RBZ

The Zimbabwe dollar is accepted regionally and internationally through the exchange rate, the Deputy Minister of Finance Clemence Chiduwa has said.
Chiduwa was responding to Godfrey Sithole (MDC Alliance) in Parliament after the latter had asked about what the government is doing to ensure Bond notes are accepted internationally. Said Chiduwa:
<blockquote>The issue of the convertibility and regional or international acceptance of our currency as we speak now, the Zimbabwean Dollar is accepted regionally and internationally through the exchange rate.
Not every currency is convertible. We are looking at currencies like the United States Dollar, the Euro, the Chinese and all that.
Not every currency can be accepted in every country. Every country has its own currency and that is what is being used locally.
When you want to do international and regional transactions, then you go to your bank and convert to the accepted currency in that destination.
When using the exchange rate, it means our currency can be used locally and regionally via the exchange rate.
There is no need for us to come up with a policy position to say we would want our currency to be used in the US. We use the exchange rate.</blockquote>
Sithole was speaking for the first time in the National Assembly, after going for almost six months without saying anything.
He is on a list of legislators that were published by OpenParly who had not spoken in Parliament.
The list has the likes of such legislators as Philip Chiyangwa, John Houghton, Supa Mandiwanzira, Gertrude Chibagu, and Cathrine Gozho.

'Bond Notes Accepted Regionally And Internationally'

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested a total of 294 people across the country for refusing to accept bond notes.
Some of those arrested were brought before the courts while others were fined between $200 and $500 respectively.
Most of the bond notes are worn out as Zimbabweans generally hoard cash and are unwilling to deposit it with banks due to its scarcity.
In an interview with The Herald on Monday, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi urged members of the public to cooperate with police officers to ensure that bond notes continue to be accepted. He said:
<blockquote>Members of the public should cooperate with officers on patrols and conducting these checks.
We also want to warn some people who are victimising members of the public who are reporting to the police that they risk being arrested and face the full wrath of the law.
The public should also be aware that the police are there to enforce the country’s laws.</blockquote>
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) introduced the bond note in 2016 ostensibly as an export incentive and to ease cash shortages.
Following the introduction of ‘real’ Zimbabwe dollars in 2019, members of the public have begun to shun the bond notes, a development that has worried authorities.

294 People Arrested For Rejecting Bond Notes

Police officers on 4 July arrested a canteen owner in Mwenezi, Masvingo Province after she refused to accept $5 bond notes as payment for the sadza they had bought, instead, demanding US dollars or South African Rands.
Shalati Siziba (47) of Valley Business Centre appeared before Mwenezi Resident Magistrate Honesty Musiiwa facing charges of contravening section 3 (2) of Statutory Instrument 175 of 2008.
She was lucky to escape 10-day jail terms after she was fined $200.
In a related incident, Sellina Mapopera (39) of Kavi Village under Chief Chitanga was also arrested for denying bond notes as legal tender.
Mapopera allegedly refused to accept $2 bond notes from one Brilliant Mutasa who also wanted to buy sadza from her canteen.
She was also fined $200.

Renowned economist, Steve Hanke has listed the Zimbabwe dollar among the “top 20 junk currencies” that need to be dumped to prevent a total collapse of economies. 
On top of his list is Venezuela whose currency has since 2019 depreciated by 70.64 percent followed by Zimbabwe whose dollar has depreciated by 54.78 percent.

Zimbabwe reintroduced its dollar in June 2019 at the same time suspending the multicurrency system that had been in place for a decade.
The multicurrency system was adopted following a record 231 million percent hyper inflation of 2008.
Since its reintroduction, the Zimbabwe dollar has rapidly shed value against other currencies, particularly the United States dollar.
This has had an adverse impact on the country’s economy and living standards resulting in a worsened socio-economic crisis.

Kukurigo reported today that a German company that was contracted to print new Zimbabwe dollar notes delivered 60,000 kgs of the cash today.
The cash was delivered at Robert Gabriel Mugabe. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe revealed last week that it would release higher denomination notes in the coming weeks.
Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube said this week that the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/05/13/zimbabwe-now-printing-more-money-mthuli-ncube-reveals/">government had resolved to print more money</a> as part of the measures to raise $18 billion for an economic stimulus.
According to Kukurigo, based on where the plane originated, it is highly likely the banknotes were printed by the Leipzig division of Giesecke &amp; Devrient, a Munich-headquartered company that has a history of doing business with the country.

Official Bank Rates & Black Market Exchange Rates Today – 18 February 2020

Reserve Bank Governor, Dr John Mangudya has announced that the central bank shall introduce a cocktail of measures to deal with uneven distribution of money in the economy.
He made the remarks on Monday while presenting the country’s 2020 first half Monetary Policy Statement in Harare. Mangudya said:
<blockquote>Focusing on liquidity management becomes critical especially the context under which around 50 per cent of this $34,5 billion is concentrated on only 200 entities, whilst the majority of the Zimbabwean population is struggling to make ends meet in an economy with a huge output gap
This framework will be operationalised through the use of open market operations tools like Treasury Bills, savings bonds, corporate bonds, statutory reserves and specific management instruments to deal with uneven distribution of money in the economy.</blockquote>
The governor speaks when reports have suggested that some of the few individuals and entities where the cash is concentrated on are allegedly injecting that money into the parallel market.
This has resultantly exacerbated the cash crisis at the same time putting the forex exchange rates on the loose. Due to inflation, the daily and maximum bank withdrawals have become insignificant thereby leaving the citizenry stranded and at the mercy of money changers.

The governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, Dr John Mangudya on Monday projected that Zimbabwe’s de-dollarisation process would be completed in five years.
He said the remarks while presenting the country’s 2020 first half Monetary Policy Statement during which he also claimed that the use of the local currency for domestic transactions had improved.
<blockquote>The bank believes that the macro-economic signals that include fiscal and monetary discipline, prospects of positive economic growth and lower inflation are improving to support a gradual de-dollarisation process within a time-frame of five years.</blockquote>
In June 2019, Zimbabwe through Statutory Instrument (SI) 142 of 2019, banned the use of all foreign currencies on domestic transactions. The SI also reintroduced the local currency which had been ditched in 2009 following hyperinflation that reached a 231 million per cent record high.
Businesses have however not welcomed the transition as they are still charging their commodities in foreign currencies particularly the United States dollar and the South African Rand.
They assert that the local currency which is constantly shedding value against other currencies is not sustainable for business.

Official Bank Rates & Black Market Exchange Rates Today – 17 February 2020

The foreign exchange rate on the parallel market rate is reportedly rising amid speculations that the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe intends to liberalise the local currency.
New Zimbabwe, an online publication reports that USD$10 is selling at Zwl $28.3 today Saturday 15 February 2020.
Yesterday’s reports from three research institutions mentioned below suggest that the rate on the parallel market was around 27.50, on average whilst the Old Mutual Implied Rate (OMIR) was at 43.7. See reports below

Interbank Rates And Bureau De Change Rates Today – 10 February 2020

Finance Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube has said that the government is introducing measures to punish those who violate Statutory Instrument (SI) 142 of 2019 which banned the use of all foreign currencies on domestic transactions.
The SI that was issued in June last year also <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/06/24/breaking-rbz-si-142-bans-use-of-all-foreign-currencies-with-effect-from-24-june-2019/">reintroduced the Zimbabwe dollar and made it the sole currency</a> in the country. Speaking to the Sunday Mail on the finance policy, Ncube said:
<blockquote>Zimbabwe is in a mono-currency situation. We introduced the Zimbabwe dollar, which is the domestic currency of Zimbabwe. But we know that it’s taking time for Zimbabwe to adjust.
Why? Because it’s difficult to have that silver bullet where everyone complies. Of course, as Government, we are enforcing compliance, we are introducing penalties for those who deviate.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, snap surveys conducted recently suggest that the country might be illegally and slowly redollarising as businesses are charging their commodities in foreign currency, particularly the US dollar.
Businesses argue that the local currency is rapidly shedding value against big currencies therefore unsustainable for business.
