The net worth of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Strive_Masiyiwa/">Strive Masiyiwa</a>, Zimbabwe’s richest man, has grown by $600 million since the beginning of 2023 at a time when some African billionaires have experienced significant declines in their fortunes this year.
According to Forbes, Masiyiwa’s net worth has surged by $600 million, largely due to the impressive performance of his diversified investment portfolio spanning various industries, such as telecommunications and technology. At the start of the year, his fortune was valued at $1.2 billion, but due to the strong performance of his broad assets, managed through his technology group, Econet Global, his net worth has now soared to $1.8 billion.
This recent increase has solidified Masiyiwa’s position as one of Africa’s richest businessmen and one of the world’s Black Billionaires, alongside prominent figures such as Jay-Z, Oprah Winfrey, Robert F. Smith, Patrice Motsepe, and Abdul Samad Rabiu.
The surge in Masiyiwa’s net worth can be attributed in large part to the outstanding growth of his publicly traded businesses on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange, particularly Econet Zimbabwe and EcoCash Holdings. Strive Masiyiwa's Net Worth Up $600M While Other African Billionaires Decline

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, the country’s largest mobile network operator by subscriber base, has with effect from Tuesday, 20 June, hiked data bundles.
In a brief notice sent via SMS to its millions of subscribers, Econet said:
<blockquote>
We are reviewing our ZWL data and SMEs bundle prices effective Tuesday, 20 June 2023.
</blockquote>
An 8 gig private WIFI data bundle now costs ZWL$111 342 up from ZWL$37 114 while a 15 gig bundle is now available for ZWL$201 033 up from ZWL$67 011.
Econent said a 25 gig will cost ZWL$294 675 from ZWL$98 225 and 50 gig users will have to pay ZWL$506 106 up from ZWL$168 702.
The latest tariff hike by Econet comes as the value of the Zimbabwe dollar has continued to plummet against other currencies at both official and parallel markets.
Some service providers are now devising ways to reject the Zimbabwe dollar such as engaging in forward rating and claiming that their point-of-sale machines are down, leaving customers with no option except to make payments in foreign currency.

Econet In Massive Data Bundle Tariff Hike

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe deputy CEO Roy Chimanikire is confident the company’s <a href="https://www.ericsson.com/en/press-releases/1/2023/econet-partners-ericsson-to-modernize-network-infrastructure-in-zimbabwe">partnership with Ericsson</a> for 5G expansion across Harare will deliver high connectivity for Zimbabweans.
Ericsson will help Econet upgrade its Radio Access Network (RAN) and mobile Core network. Said Chimanikire:

"Econet - Ericsson Partnership To Deliver High Network Connectivity In Zimbabwe"

A 32-year-old <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Epworth">Epworth</a> man was Wednesday sentenced to 20 years in jail at the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Chivhu">Chivhu</a> Magistrates Court for stealing and vandalising ZESA infrastructure.
Wellie Maribha, who was on the police wanted list in Hwedza, was arrested on Monday at his girlfriend’s place in Epworth, southeast of Harare.
NewsDay Zimbabwe reports that Maribha was being sought for vandalism of transformers and theft of copper cables at Chimowa primary and secondary schools in Hwedza.
ZESA Holdings spokesperson <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/George_Manyaya">George Manyaya</a> said the power utility was working with law enforcement agents and communities to fight infrastructure damage. Manyaya said:

Meanwhile, three Harare men were on Monday caught vandalising ZESA infrastructure as they dug up a three-core armoured cable in Mt Hampden.
The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Republic_Police">Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP)</a> said Abraham Sibindi (20) of Charles Prince Airport compound and Addington Magana (26) appeared in court yesterday and were remanded in custody to this Thursday for bail hearing.
Copper cable theft has grown into a pandemic in Zimbabwe, particularly for the electricity, telecommunications, and railway parastatals.
Organisations such as ZESA, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/TelOne">TelOne</a>, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Econet_Wireless_Zimbabwe">Econet</a>, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Telecel_Zimbabwe">Telecel</a>, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/NetOne_Zimbabwe">NetOne</a>, and the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/National_Railways_of_Zimbabwe">National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ)</a> tell tales of loss of business due to the effects of copper cable theft that has been spreading uncontrolled.
Households too are affected as they are left to spend days without power and sometimes asked to pull resources together for the purchase of copper cables.
ZESA is losing more than $2 million annually to copper cable thefts and vandalism of transformers. 
It is suspected most of the stolen cables are being smuggled to South Africa and they are then shipped further to countries that use the metal in the construction and manufacturing industries.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa early this year said the government is crafting legislation to <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/copper-cable-thieves-will-be-shot-on-sight-president-mnangagwa/">allow law officers to shoot to kill</a> all who will be seen stealing copper cables.

Copper Thief Sentenced To 20 Years In Prison

The High Court on Friday granted an order in favour of MISA Zimbabwe interdicting Econet Wireless Zimbabwe and other cited respondents from <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/police-executing-a-search-seizure-warrant-at-econets-and-cassavas-main-offices/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">implementing a police warrant</a> seeking information on the mobile phone operator’s transactions.
High Court judge Justice Tawanda Chitapi granted the provisional order in Harare on 24 July 2020 in favour of the applicants, MISA Zimbabwe, first applicant, and the Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights), second applicant.
In a statement following the ruling, MISA Zimbabwe said:
<blockquote>Justice Chitapi granted the provisional order by consent in terms of which:
<ul>
<li>The respondents and all other persons acting through them are interdicted from implementing the directives of the Warrant of Search and Seizure (Ref WSS 3913/20).</li>
<li>Econet Wireless shall strictly maintain the privacy and confidentiality of the information that is in its custody relating to MISA Zimbabwe and ZimRights, the organisations’ members, and the organisations’ employees.</li>
</ul>
For the avoidance of doubt, Econet Wireless shall not divulge to any of the co-respondents (i.e 1st to 5th respondents):</blockquote>

High Court Stops Police From Executing A Search & Seizure Warrant At Econet

<blockquote>The public is advised to ignore a false message circulating on some social media platforms purportedly written on the Econet Wireless website.
The message claims that Econet’s internet services will be down on Friday, August 16, from 6 am to 3 pm due to a system upgrade.
Econet has no internet system upgrade scheduled for Friday, August 16, 2019, and accordingly advises the public to ignore the false message. It is fake and not originating from the company.</blockquote>

Econet Wireless says that it empathises with its customers who are complaining of excessively high data tariffs. The giant mobile network operator said in a statement:
<blockquote>1. The cost of fuel has gone up by 500% and the local currency has lost over 900% in value to date. At the same time, our voice tariffs have only increased by 33%.
2. 1 300 of our base stations run on generators for over 18 hours a day and consume 2 million Litres of fuel every month. We only receive 25% of this fuel due to the current shortages.
3. We require over US$60 Million to upgrade equipment and convert our sites to solar.
As we face these adversities together, we ask that you stand with us as you have over 20 years. Connected we are stronger.</blockquote>

Mr King has spearheaded the implementation of several technological innovations, including digital products, and overseen developments aimed at digitizing school education and health care. He is a passionate driver of youth development and empowerment.
Mr King also founded various entrepreneurial endeavours in the field of agriculture and food security, driving efficiencies through technology innovations.
He was Chief Executive Officer and Group Marketing Director at Innscor Africa Limited where he pioneered the growth of a range of products and services, from bread and confectionary to video games and entertainment, and expanded Zimbabwean business ventures in the region.

<blockquote>Econet would want to once again sincerely apologise to our customers following the network challenges faced on Saturday, July 20, 2019, triggered by ZESA power outages at our Network Operations Centre in Harare. We wish to take this opportunity to update our valued customers and the general public on the impact of the current power crisis.
Our network was designed to withstand a set level of power outages and the highest such level has now been exceeded as a result of the ongoing rolling power outages being experienced across the country.
In order to mitigate the impact on service quality and network performance, Econet has made attempts in the reality of serious fuel shortages to increase diesel fuel allocated to our base station sites. Even with these contingency measures, the increased fuel allocation is still inadequate to ensure the required optimum network performance and at current regulated pricing levels, the related costs are not sustainable.
The severe shortage of both electrical power and diesel fuel means that some of our base stations will not be operational when there is no ZESA power or when fuel runs out on a site. This inevitably results in the degradation of all services supported by the network in terms of service availability, call setup, call success rates, dropped call rates and speech quality.
It is increasingly becoming untenable and uneconomical for Econet to guarantee a reasonable grade of service and optimal network uptime under the current conditions. With the ongoing aggressive ZESA load shedding, our requirements are at more than six times the diesel we are currently using in order to provide uninterrupted service.
Econet would like to point out that the company cannot sustain the current operating conditions of running back-up generators for 14 to 18 hours daily, based on the current heavily eroded tariffs. We are also now incurring higher costs because of the heavy reliance on generators as we now have to service the generators every fortnight, as opposed to the scheduled quarterly service intervals.
Our voice tariffs have remained static in a business operating environment where the local currency has lost nearly 900 per cent value to the US dollar since the beginning of the year, and where the price of the fuel has risen by more than 500 per cent since the beginning of the year.
Given the foregoing, we have stepped up our engagement with the relevant stakeholders with a view to finding an urgent solution to the problem that Econet and the mobile telecommunications industry faces due to the national power crisis. If the authorities that oversee the industry do not offer quick viable solutions as required in the current crisis, the business will have no choice but to take drastic measures to ensure sustainable service.

JUST IN: ECONET Reviews Data Bouquets Prices Upwards

Econet Wireless said the challenges experienced across its network on Monday are to a fault in Masvingo.
In a statement released last night, mobile said the fault initially resulted in call failures in Masvingo region only, but later escalated to a nation-wide problem following an abnormal surge in traffic, which led to instability on its key network systems. Econet said
<blockquote>The instability on our key network systems resulted in intermittent failure by customers to make calls, send SMSes (messages), browse mobile data or to use USSD for services such as EcoCash and to purchase product bundles across the network.</blockquote>
