The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the death of a 9-year-old girl who died after falling while running away from masquerades (Zvigure) at a school in Mabvuku, Harare on May 15, 2023.
In a statement seen by Pindula News, police said investigations are ongoing. Reads the statement:

The ZRP confirms a sad incident in which a 9 year old girl died after falling to the ground while running away from masquerades (Zvigure) at a school located along Sinini Drive, Eastview Phase1, Mabvuku, Harare on 15/05/23. Investigations are in progress.
</blockquote>
Masquerades, also known as &#8220;Zvigure,&#8221; are traditional dancers who wear masks and perform during cultural ceremonies in Zimbabwe. It is unclear why they were at the school in Mabvuku, Harare, but it is possible that they were hired to perform or were part of a cultural event taking place at the school. The circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation by the authorities.
The dances originated among the Chewa ethnic group. The Chewa people are primarily found in Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique, with smaller populations in Zimbabwe and Tanzania.
The history of Zvigure in Zimbabwe can be traced back to the early 1900s when Chewa migrants brought the dance to the country. Over time, the dance has become an integral part of Zimbabwean culture and is performed during traditional ceremonies, such as weddings and initiation rites.
The dance is characterized by its use of masks, music, and colourful costumes, and is often accompanied by storytelling. The masks used in the dance are intricately carved and represent different characters, such as ancestors, spirits, and animals.
Zvigure, also known as Gule Wamkulu in Malawi, is a traditional dance performed by the Chewa people during initiation ceremonies. It has been recognized by UNESCO as a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity and is considered an important cultural tradition in both Zimbabwe and Malawi.
While the dance is not inherently violent, there have been instances where the use of Zvigure masks and costumes has been linked to violence and criminal activities in Zimbabwe.

Schoolgirl Dies While Running From Zvigure At A Harare School

Two suspected perpetual thieves Monday appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi to answer to charges of house-breaking, including breaking into houses of Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) agents.
Kudakwashe Chirendo (27) and Vitalis Mutinhiri (43), who were both represented by Norman Ndomene, were remanded to this Tuesday for bail ruling.
The first complainant, George Garufu, a retired deputy paymaster at the Salary Services Bureau (SSB) lost his 42-inch LG television and recovered it after the duo was arrested following a tip-off.
The second complainant, Moreblessing Bunure, who works for Tafara and Harare Hospital accounts department reported that her house was broken into on April 9 and she lost a 5kg Cadac and a 3kg MCK gas tanks.
She recovered her properties after the arrest of the suspects.
The third complainant is Tinotenda Kamwendo, whose house was broken into on May 25. She lost a Sony Bravia 42-inch television, which was recovered after the arrest of the duo.
The fourth complainant is Tawanda Jangano, who is employed in the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC). His house in Mabvuku new stands was broken into on July 12 and his 65-inch smart TV, an invertor, a car battery, a 5kg gas tank, four 2-in-1 blankets, a bedspread, a sensor light, a three-piece radio and various groceries were stolen.
The value of the property stolen was US$1 800, and property valued at US$562 was recovered.
The fifth victim, Mharadze Zvidzai, is also employed at the OPC. In May, the thieves broke into his house and stole a 32-inch Samsung television, a 5kg gas tank, six-metre curtains and US$10 in cash.
The value of the stolen property was US$320 and the recovered property was valued at US$200.

Daring Thieves Break Into CIOs Houses

A 47-year-old taxi driver from Mabvuku recently appeared before a magistrate on allegations of raping and infecting his minor daughter with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) five years ago.
The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the minor, told magistrate Estere Chivasa that the rape charges were fabricated by his estranged wife after a dispute over the child’s custody.
The man allegedly raped the minor in 2015 when she was aged 12, and then again in 2019 after she was left in his custody by her grandmother.
Following the rape incident in 2019, the minor reportedly told her aunt who, however, concealed the matter.
On May 9, 2020, she developed warts on her privates and told her aunt who she was now living with as she wanted to seek medical help, leading to the arrest of the accused.

Mabvuku Taxi Driver Infects Minor Daughter With STI

France-based Warriors midfielder <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Marshal_Munetsi" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Marshal Munetsi</a> has paid school fees for 60 pupils at Mabvuku and Donnybrook Primary Schools through his Marshal Munetsi Foundation.
Munetsi also pledged to supplement the pupils&#8217; stationery needs. Writing on his Twitter, handle, he said:
<blockquote>The Marshall Munetsi Foundation continues to empower the future of society via education by continuing to cater for the fees needs of our 60 kids at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mabvuku" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mabvuku</a> and Donnybrook Primary schools and pledge to supplement their stationery needs as well.</blockquote>

Warriors Midfielder Pays School Fees For 60 Kids In Mabvuku

The 2 died on Sunday after their vehicle collided with another one near Ruwa in Harare. The 2, Paul Chikuni was a <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Marondera">Marondera</a> ward 1 branch chairman and he died on the spot while his friend Admire Takawira, who was driving the car was pronounced dead on arrival at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Parirenyatwa_Group_of_Hospitals">Parirenyatwa Hospital. </a>
MDC Marondera Spokesperson expressed the party&#8217;s sadness over the death of the 2:
<blockquote>We are saddened as a party because of the demise of our comrades who sacrificed their all for the attainment of a better Zimbabwe. The most worrying thing is that their vision had been cut short courtesy of our roads which are in bad state.
We have also lost four members within a short space of time, but their death is going to make our resolve even stronger in our quest to see to it that the (Zanu PF) regime is removed.</blockquote>

2 MDC Members Perish In An Accident

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Republic_Police" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP)</a> has blocked the opposition MDC from holding a district rally in Mabvuku on Sunday.
In a letter addressed to the MDC chairman of Ward 19 in Mabvuku-Tafara, Officer Commanding Police, Harare Suburban District, Chief Superintendent S. Matongo wrote:

The banning of the MDC rally raises several questions, among them; why is the law selectively applied? ZANU PF held an anti-sanctions rally in October in Harare and the ruling party held another rally on Saturday 9 November 2019 in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Chiredzi" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Chiredzi</a>.
Moreover, the government has told the international community that the repressive law, POSA, has been removed from the statute books yet it is still being used by the police to ban the MDC&#8217;s rallies.

Things came to a standstill  yesterday after a man was seen walking through the area dragging two snakes in what is reported to have been a ritual to get rid of the snakes. The snakes were reportedly passed to the man by his father but were now tormenting him, hence the bizarre ritual to get rid of them. The man is said to have been following the advice of a &#8220;prophet.&#8221;

Video: Bizarre Ritual as man walks around with two huge snakes

In a bizarre incident, a man was spotted walking around dragging two snakes which he allegedly &#8220;inherited&#8221; from his father for use in  rituals. The man was reportedly working on the advice of a &#8220;prophet&#8221; who was conducting a cleansing ritual so that he would get rid of the snakes which he claimed were tormenting him. The man was reportedly saying &#8220;baba handichada zvinhu zvamakandisiira,” loosely translated to &#8220;father I no longer want the snakes you bequeathed to me.&#8221;
