The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has reversed the retrenchment of over 70 of its workers and reinstated them.
Reports suggest that some of the affected workers were summoned to the human resources office on May 30, and handed letters of retrenchment notifying them that May 31 was their last day of work.
However, in a notice, NUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Mqhele Dlodlo advised all the staff members who were affected during the Staff Rationalisation Exercise last month to return to work and continue their duties with immediate effect. Read the notice:

The Vice Chancellor’s office wishes to advise that the Staff Rationalisation Exercise, which had resulted in some employees being laid off has been reversed with immediate effect.
All staff members who were affected should report for duty at their workstations.

NUST Reverses Staff Retrenchments

Students at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) have gone on strike and placed the institution under lockdown by barricading the roads leading to the institution. The students say they have gone for four weeks without lectures as the lecturers are on strike. The students have blocked Beitbridge Road and Cecil Avenue.
Lecturers have been on strike as well as they are protesting against the alleged mismanagement of resources at the institution since the beginning of the semester in early February.
Part of the letter written by the Students Representative Council to the students reads:
<blockquote>When the ordinary becomes extraordinary, fearless confrontation becomes the sole option at our disposal. Dialogues between the SRC, admin and NUSTEDA have failed to bring back normalcy to our institution, it’s now almost 4 weeks without lectures. To that end, the only apt solution at our disposal is to confront the admin.
Allow me to state with precision, certainty and without any intention of throwing you into jeopardy that the only medicine to cure this perennial administration neurosis is unity of purpose and direction amongst the NUST Students. In that. regard we call all progressive students to come together as we SHUTDOWN NUST tomorrow, all revolutionary cadres should be on campus at exactly 6:00 am for a briefing meeting.
NO STUDENT IS ALLOWED ON CAMPUS, WE WILL ALL COME TOGETHER OUTSIDE THE NUST GATES AS A UNITED FORCE AND FIGHT FOR OUR BIRTHRIGHT FROM THERE. ON CAMPUS MINISTRIES WE APPRECIATE THE PRAYERS YOU HAVE BEEN DOING FOR US, NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT.</blockquote>
<h2>Update:</h2>
The Zimbabwe Republic Police reacted by sending riot police and water cannons to disperse the protesting students.  The police are reported to have responded in a heavy manner by beating up students as well as spraying them with chemical water. Zimbabwe Congress of Students Union (Zicosu) president Mr Tafadzwa Gambiza said close to 50 students were arrested.

Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa has commended the Infrastructural Development Bank of Zimbabwe (IDBZ) for assisting the government in supplying housing. Chinamasa was speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for an accommodation project at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST). The project is expected to alleviate the accommodation shortages which are bedevilling the institution.
The project is designed to house 1,480 students and will cost $12 million. It will be bankrolled by three institutional investors.
Said Chinamasa:
<blockquote>Funding is being raised through a private placement of Perpetual, Non-Cumulative, convertible participating preference shares with a fixed dividend of 5 percent. The Preference Shareholders shall share in the residual income of the project,” said Finance minister Patrick Chinamasa at a groundbreaking ceremony for the project on Thursday.
IDBZ has managed to secure funding commitments from three institutional investors who are partnering the Bank to implement the project, with the Bank contributing the land (project site) which it bought from a private owner</blockquote>

Updated: NUST to get new accommodation buildings from Govt and IDBZ

Lecturers at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) are reported to have gone on industrial action citing poor working conditions and differences with the university’s management. The Nust Educators Association (NUSTEDA) in a statement said:
<blockquote>The NUSTEDA executive hereby announces an immediate industrial action in both parallel and conventional programmes from today (13 September), until issues affecting NUST have been resolved. Members who attended today’s NUSTEDA General Meeting highlighted that the existence of the Union is under threat, and current working conditions are untenable and they pose a threat to the health and safety of academic members of staff and students.
The Union resolved that a letter should be written to the Chairman of Council to this effect, and copied to management, against whom complaints are being launched. It was also highlighted that these complaints are to be themed “Gross Mismanagement.
It was indicated that it was insensitive for the current management to be mainly concerned about what is contractually due to them (vehicles, sabbatical and contact leaves, etc) and to fund these obligations using money generated from tuition fees (instead of money from treasury), whilst academic facilities and programmes continue being under-resourced</blockquote>

Lecturers at NUST go on strike citing gross mismanagement

According to the National University of Science and Technology’s (Nust)  2016 Vice-Chancellor report 10 percent of the students and staff who were attended at the Nust Clinic were treated for sexually-transmitted infections. The clinic treated 2 632 students and staff members. Another 10 percent of the students who sought treatment sought treatment for Tuberculosis. The majority of the students who were treated at the clinic, 21 percent, were treated for respiratory problems.

10% of students at NUST who sought medical treatment were treated for STIs

National University of Science and Technology (Nust) is considering enrolling 20% of foreign students to increase revenue for STEM studies which cost more than non-STEM degree courses. According to Nust’s 2016 Vice-Chancellor’s annual report a student undertaking any STEM studies spends $4 722 in consumables while non-STEM learners expenses amounted to $2 815.
Part of the report reads:
<blockquote>The increase in STEM enrolment to 70 percent which carries a higher cost structure — will require new interventions in order to ensure a balanced budget. A drive for international student’s enrolment in the region of 20 percent is one such initiative.</blockquote>
Nust’s revenues totalled to $40 718 636 against their expenditure of $43 373 728, resulting in a $ 2 655 092 deficit.

NUST considers enrolling 20% foreign students to increase revenue for STEM studies

Enert Sibanda who had been admitted to Mpilo Central Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit following last week’s horrific accident that occurred near the National University of Science and Technology, died yesterday morning bringing the death toll to 15.
Her death came on the same day when seven other victims of the same accident were being buried in moving scenes at West Park Cemetery. Fourteen people from two families died on spot on Wednesday night last week when they were travelling in a commuter omnibus to a funeral in Masvingo. Sibanda suffered serious head injuries and on Sunday, her family sent a plea for $600 for her to undergo a CT head scan.

Nust accident death toll rises as another family member dies

Tapiwa Zhanje (28), a nephew of Bulawayo businessman and former Zanu-PF Bulawayo provincial youth league secretary for finance Davies Muhambi, allegedly shot himself and died at his Hillside suburb lodgings in Bulawayo after being involved in a road accident in the early hours of Saturday.
Zhanje was driving Muhambi’s Mercedes Benz S600 to Kumalo where he wanted to drop friends after attending a party before he lost control of the car and crushed into a gate and precast wall opposite the Hockey Stadium in Kumalo suburb. Muhambi confirmed the accident to Sunday News and said that he was in Harare when the accident occurred.
According to the owner of the house where the car crashed into, Mrs Debra Mweke the driver ran to the gate and stood there in shock while we were trying to help the people who were in the car. Mrs Mweke said she suspected that the driver thought the passengers had died as he immediately fled from the scene.

Nust student shoots himself after being involved in car accident

A road accident in Bulawayo <a href="https://twitter.com/BrezhMalaba/status/839717982033047552">claimed 15 lives</a> as a commuter omnibus that was on its way to Masvingo collided with a haulage truck near the National University of Science and Technology. According to <a href="https://twitter.com/TembaDube/status/839697989983686656">some sources</a> the death toll has risen to 16. We will keep you updated. Pictures: Horrific accident claims 15 lives in Bulawayo as Masvingo-bound kombi collides with haulage truck near NUST

The National University of Science and Technology (NUST)’s Director of Information, Mr Felix Moyo confirmed to The Chronicle that the university is considering two intakes.
Said Moyo:
<blockquote>We are considering introducing two intakes, although that is a matter under discussion. Once we come up with something concrete we will make an announcement.</blockquote>
Moyo further said that the university was considering introducing a second intake due to the overwhelming number of applications from prospective students. According to a 2014 study, NUST receives about 5 000 applications but can only cater for 1 500. However there are mixed feelings over the proposal with some feeling that the quality of education will be compromised as lecturers will be overwhelmed and won’t have enough time for consultations. Some believe that the infrastructure and accommodation woes faced by the institution will worsen if they introduce a second intake.

Muzi Tshuma (22), who was a second year student at <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/National_University_of_Science_and_Technology">National University of Science and Technology (Nust)</a> drowned in the <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Zambezi_River">Zambezi River</a> in Binga while allegedly trying to save his girlfriend, who survived, during a <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Seventh_Day_Adventist_Church">Seventh Day Adventist Church</a> youth camp on Wednesday.
The incident occurred at around 2PM in the Zambezi River near Binga centre. A source at the camp who spoke to The Chronicle said church leaders had warned the more than 3 000 youths not to get into the water but Tshuma and some friends decided to go for a swim. Binga District Administrator, Mrs Lydia Ndethi-Banda, said the body was retrieved at around 1 PM by a sub-aqua team that arrived in the district on Wednesday night.
Due to increasing drowning incidents, police have constantly urged people not to play in or near water bodies. In a statement recently, national police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Charity_Charamba">Charity Charamba</a> said cases of drowning normally increase during the rainy season.

NUST student drowns in Zambezi River trying to save girlfriend

State security agents confiscated hundreds of pencils, pens, markers and eyebrow pencils from<a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/National_University_of_Science_and_Technology"> National University of Science and Technology (Nust)</a> graduands on Friday, as the writing utensils seem to have become a threat to President <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Robert_Mugabe">Robert Mugabe</a>. Mugabe was the guest of honour at the university’s graduation ceremony.
After the graduation, piles of the impounded pens were dumped at security checkpoints together with other sharp objects that were thought could pose a security risk to the 92-year-old leader. The tight security measure comes on the back of protests over unemployment by graduands at the <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/University_of_Zimbabwe">University of Zimbabwe (UZ)</a>’s graduation ceremony last month.
