In a recent incident in Katombora, Middle Zambezi Valley, two suspected poachers met a fatal end after engaging in a firefight with Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife (Zimparks) rangers.
The confrontation resulted in the deaths of the poachers, while three others were apprehended. 
The rangers acted swiftly to protect wildlife and recovered 15 elephant tusks, along with a rifle and ammunition.
Zimparks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo confirmed the incident posting on X:
<blockquote>
2 suspected poachers were gunned down in Katombora (Mid Zambezi) after an exchange of fire with @Zimparks rangers while 3 were arrested. 15 tusks, 375 rifle, 5 rounds of ammunition were recovered. Investigations are in progress.

Poaching remains a critical issue in Zimbabwe, threatening the country’s rich wildlife heritage.
A recent investigation revealed a cyanide scandal implicating authorities and a mysterious Chinese businesswoman named Li Song.
According to The NewsHawks report, a staggering 40 tonnes and a pallet containing 1.1 tonnes of cyanide were clandestinely and unlawfully stored at a warehouse in Bulawayo.
Cyanide, commonly associated with mining, is also used by poachers, with recent reports suggest that over 300 elephants have died in Hwange National Park due to poachers lacing watering holes and salt licks with cyanide.

Two Poachers Gunned Down, Three Arrested In Mid-Zambezi

Zimbabwe has recorded a decline in poaching at the Hwange National Park, the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) has said.
A total of 36 wildlife animals were poached in 2022, down from 42 in 2021.
From 2016 to 2019, at least 322 elephants were killed by poachers, largely for their tusks.
ZimParks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo told the <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200021472/hwange-game-park-records-decline-in-poaching">Southern Eye</a> that poaching had been on a decline, with no cases recorded in 2023 at the game park. He said:

Poaching has gone down in Zimbabwe. In Hwange, we have been doing extremely well in terms of managing our wildlife.
We are not doing this in isolation, but we also work closely with others like the International Fund for Animal Welfare, the World Wildlife Fund, the African Wildlife Foundation and many others too many to mention in fighting poaching.

Farawo said harsh jail sentences coupled with various interventions such as joint patrols with wildlife agencies have contributed to the decline in poaching. He said:

In terms of partnerships, what we are calling conservation partnerships, they are also helping us in terms of resources such as vehicles, and refresher courses for our rangers and it has helped a lot because we are now more visible in communities.
We are now more visible in the parks, which is deterring would-be poachers. The mandatory nine-year sentence has also proved to be a deterrent.

Poachers target elephants and rhinos for their horns, which are in high demand in Asia.
Reports suggest that some Asians believe ivory and tusks have medicinal properties although there is no scientific evidence for this.

Hwange Game Park Records Decline In Poaching - Zimparks

Learners in the quiet and remote village of Chesa, 20 kilometres from the world-renowned Khami Ruins Monuments, are abandoning school at the primary level to venture into the illegal business of poaching and selling firewood.
The school dropouts spend most of their time in the forest, cutting down trees and shuttling between Chesa Village and Old Pumula suburb selling firewood to residents.
The firewood is sourced from vast forests stretching towards Nyamandlovu and the surrounding farms.
Mduduzi Nkomo and Makheleni Nkomo, both 18 years old, quit school five years ago when they were 13 and doing Grade Seven at nearby Chesa Primary School.
The boys traded the pen for the axe just two months before writing Grade Seven examinations.
The firewood poachers spend days on end cutting down trees in the forest while hiding from the police, Environmental Management Agency (EMA) officials, and Forestry Commission rangers.
After cutting enough firewood to fill up a donkey-drawn scotch cart, the firewood is transported to Bulawayo at night.
The poachers normally move in groups consisting of usually three scotch carts at any given time.
Mduduzi and Makheleni’s grandmother, Gogo Nkomo, told the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/poaching-a-future-from-firewood-pupils-ditch-school-to-poach-firewood-for-a-living/">Chronicle</a> that almost every homestead in the village has a boy who quit school to get into the firewood trade. She said:

Mduduzi and Makheleni did not leave school because there was no money, their parents are in South Africa so school fees were never an issue.
They are not the only ones who stopped going to school to join the firewood business, a lot of boys here in the village are doing it.
Almost every homestead has a boy who is into the business or left school because they say education will not help them in any way.
Two of my donkeys are used by Mduduzi and Makheleni and I hardly see them for days, if not weeks.
Whenever I want firewood or water, I have to ask their friends to pass on the message when they meet in the bush.
Sometimes they come right away or they stay in the bush and come home when they feel like it.

Thembelani Mathe, a mother of four who works for teachers at Chesa Primary School taking care of the teachers’ babies and cleaning their houses, revealed that her son quit primary school to join the illegal firewood trade.
She said her second-born son, 15-year-old Prosper Mathe, turned his back on school in 2021 halfway into the first term in Grade Seven to join a firewood poaching crew. She said:

What could I do to stop him? He had made up his mind and forcing him to go to school was not going to work.
He was simply going to wake up and pretend he was going to school but spend the day cutting down trees for firewood.
It’s painful to watch my son choose this kind of life but what can I do?
The man that Prosper works for owns a house in Old Pumula so he buys groceries that side and brings them back home whenever he gets a chance.
As a mother I fear for his well-being, he might act tough but he is only 15 years old and works with boys and men way older than him.

Another villager, Ndaba Sibanda, said the community is not lazy but the shortage of water in the area makes it difficult for youths to venture into self-sustaining projects such as brick moulding or nutrition gardens.
Sibanda appealed to the Government to drill boreholes and install JoJo tanks to enable villagers to grow vegetables all year round and take the produce to Bulawayo markets.

Learners Quit School To Poach Firewood For A Living

A 40-year-old rifle-wielding Chipinge man who was recently caught poaching in a game safari has been sentenced to two years imprisonment.
Mwari Mapakame of Mangezi Village under Chief Musikavanhu’s area of Chipinge was found in possession of carcasses of a bushbuck and a grysbok as well as fresh python skin on Wednesday last of last week.
Mapakame appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Alfred Chinembiri and pleaded guilty to poaching in a safari area, possession of a firearm without a certificate, and hunting a specified and protected animal.
The magistrate sentenced Mapakame to 24 months in prison for unlawfully hunting two wild animals without a safari permit.
However, six months were suspended on condition of good behaviour, leaving him to serve 18 months.
Mapakame was also fined $30 000 for illegally possessing a firearm, while six months were wholly suspended for possessing a python skin.
Manicaland CID District spokesperson, Detective Sergeant Shake Shanu, told The Manica Post that Mapakame was arrested at Chipinge Safari Game Park, Middle Sabi in Chipinge.
He said a game ranger, Simbarashe Makumire, was on patrol at Kilo Base with fellow game rangers when they heard three gunshots within their area of jurisdiction. Said Shanu:

They quickly alerted Mr Dudzai Manyawo of Chipinge Safari Staff Quarters who mobilised manpower to man all potential exit points of the suspected armed poachers.
Mr Manyawo also enlisted the services of Changadzi Support Unit details who were on patrol in the area and also Save Valley Anti-Poaching Tracking Specialists to assist with tracker dogs.
CID details from the Minerals Flora and Fauna Unit in Chipinge and police officers from Changadzi Support Unit discovered a trail of blood near Kilo Base.

Detective Sergeant Shanu said tracker dogs were set to track the blood, leading to the arrest of Mapakame. He said:

Mapakame was found in possession of a shotgun rifle with two live rounds of ammunition and four spent cartridges, a hunting torch, a flick knife, and a pair of catapults.
The accused also had in his possession carcasses of a bushbuck and a grysbok with a total value of US$3 500 and also fresh python skin valued at US$2 000.

Mapakame told detectives that he had borrowed the shotgun from Sydney Jenya of Jenya Two Village under Chief Musikavanhu’s area for temporary use.
The police made a follow-up for Jenya at his known addresses but failed to locate him. Said Shanu:

His wife, Mrs Chipo Jenya was interviewed and said Jenya had gone to Mozambique that same day to attend a family gathering.
She, however, confirmed that Jenya had a licensed shotgun and keeps the keys to the gun cabinet.

Trail Of Blood Gives Away Poacher

Poachers recently killed and de-horned a black rhinoceros at Chipinge Safari Camp.
ZRP spokesperson in Manicaland Province, Inspector Nobert Muzondo, confirmed the incident to <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/poachers-kill-black-rhino/">The Manica Post</a> saying the decomposing carcass of the black rhinoceros was found on 12 October. He said:
<blockquote>
Poachers sneaked into Chipinge Safari Camp armed with unknown rifles. They proceeded to one of the water points along the Chidimayi River on the safari where they shot and killed a black rhinoceros.
On October 12, the informant who was on patrol in the company of fellow game rangers discovered the carcass of the black rhinoceros about 500 metres along Chidimayi River.
A trail of blood was seen emanating from the water point along the river to the place where the carcass was discovered.
The carcass was inspected and it was discovered that it was notched on both ears. 
It was also observed that the poachers used an unknown sharp object to remove the horn.
Checks were made with Zimparks records and it was established that the black rhinoceros had a Notch Number 1481, first recorded in 2015.

Former Victoria Falls Mayor Sifiso Mpofu was on Thursday evening nabbed over a case of suspected poaching.
The arrest was confirmed by Zimbabwe National Parks Spokesperson Tinashe Farawo on Thursday morning.
Writing on microblogging site Twitter, Farawo said:
<blockquote>Ex Vic Falls Mayor and two others have been arrested for illegal possession of 120kgs of ivory. Say no to poaching.</blockquote>

Former Vic Falls Mayor Arrested For Poaching

Two poachers were on Tuesday morning shot and killed during an exchange of fire with a team of Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority rangers working together with the police in Hwange National Park.
Zimparks spokesperson, Mrs Caroline Washaya-Moyo, confirmed the incident to Star FM News yesterday and said that one of the poachers was from Nkayi while his accomplice was yet to be identified since he had no particulars. 
The incident comes a few days after a suspected poacher from Kwekwe Godknows Mashame (43) was arrested for killing a rhinoceros and removing its horns, worth $120, 000 in Bubi Valley Conservancy, in Beitbridge district. 
Mashame of 19067 Mbizo 4 Extension was arrested after dropping his cell-phone at the crime scene on 24 December, which the police later used to track him to his base.
