Urgent Plea For Financial Support: Mary McKop's Battle For Life

Zimbabwe Human Rights Lawyers, in collaboration with the Harare City Council, are inviting sympathisers to provide humanitarian aid to over 90 families in Budiriro who were displaced by recent floods. The affected families are in urgent need of blankets, food, and accommodation. Those willing to help can contact the Harare City Council or ZIMRIGHTS organisations for assistance.
The houses affected by the floods are located in an area called Murazi, previously known as “kwaPeter,” at the end of Budiriro 4. In a joint statement, the local government authority and the ZIMRIGHTS Lawyers said:

The incident has sparked public outrage, with some blaming those who allocated land in wetlands for the tragedy.
Darlington Chigumbu, the Member of Parliament for Budiriro South, called for decisive action against land barons who profited from the illegal sale of stands and corrupt officials who authorized these allocations. He said:

It is heart breaking that as leaders we subject the people we lead to such tragedies. Someone pocketed money through selling of these stands, Someone got a cut to authorise this illegality. Land barons must be dealt with decisively.

Others questioned whether the council is capable of meeting the demand for stands and suggested that they may be neglecting those on the waiting list while allocating land to unauthorised individuals.
Land barons have been illegally allocating land, including in wetlands, often with the assistance of corrupt council officials. Over the years, local government authorities have demolished thousands of houses built on illegally acquired or undesignated land.

Call For Humanitarian Aid For Over 90 Budiriro Families Displaced By Recent Floods

Over 200 vulnerable families in the Midlands Province of Zimbabwe received a helping hand from the Gweru-based River Valley Group of Companies. The company donated hampers containing food and other household consumables to these families, offering much-needed support and relief. The gesture was met with appreciation and gratitude from the beneficiaries, who expressed their heartfelt thanks to the company for its generosity.
The food hampers were distributed at a ceremony held at River Valley Group’s premises in Gweru. Speaking at the event, Dr. Smelly Dube, the Chief Executive Officer of River Valley Group, highlighted that the support provided to vulnerable households was part of the company’s annual commitment to giving back to the community. She emphasised that the hampers were a small way of assisting families who were facing numerous challenges. Dr. Dube further explained:

River Valley Group Donates Food Hampers, Other Household Consumables To Over 200 Families

Nashua Zimbabwe recently dispatched a maintenance team to Jairos Jiri Children’s Centre to carry out essential repairs in the dormitory. The repairs included installing a new door, fixing windows, and providing new blankets and pillows. These efforts aimed to ensure that the 142 disabled children residing at the centre have comfortable and pleasant living environments. The centre’s dedicated staff of 90 members cater to the diverse special needs of these children, offering varying levels of assistance in different aspects of their lives.
The refurbishment of the dormitory was made possible through the generous contributions of Nashua Zimbabwe, an organization committed to lending support whenever possible. The renovations were done in July 2023. 
In addition to their donations of food and supplies, Nashua Zimbabwe also provided the Jairos Jiri Centre administration with a printer. Nashua Zimbabwe covers the printer’s ongoing supply needs, recognizing the importance of easy access to printing for the administrative team in fulfilling their document requirements.

Since 2006, Nashua Zimbabwe has been actively donating to Jairos Jiri, having become an integral part of the Jairos Jiri family over the past 17 years. Monthly, Nashua provides essential groceries to the children and occasionally hosts musical events. Furthermore, Nashua has sponsored a dormitory, accommodating ten of the 140 children at Jairos Jiri, which has been named the Nashua Dorm.
While the impact of Nashua Zimbabwe’s donations is significant, it is unfortunately not enough to sustain the entire centre. The school administration provides Nashua with a monthly list of basic needs, and Nashua contributes as much as they can. They encourage other corporations and individuals to support the cause by donating in any capacity. Nashua extends a plea to other organizations within the ICT sector in the country to contribute and assist disadvantaged communities. Together, they can make a positive difference in the lives of these exceptional children. Speaking to Pindula News following the completion of the dormitory refurbishment, Laura Kelly, the Marketing Manager of Nashua Zimbabwe, expressed the company’s motivations for getting involved with Jairos Jiri. She said:

Following the Chairman’s footprints, Nashua Zimbabwe wanted to get involved in an organisation which is positively impacting children’s lives. In 2006 we decided to partner with Jarios Jiri, once we understood their level of dedication to the children and the difficulties these children were facing.
Throughout the years we have sponsored monthly groceries, been given a girls’ dormitory to look after and maintain and also hosted the occasional event for the children. We all know the current situation in Zimbabwe so not much needs to be mentioned there but what does need to be mentioned is they need other organisations to get involved with this remarkable centre and start contributing too. The monthly donations of groceries are changing the lives of children who find themselves, not only in financial constraints but physical ones too and if a difference can be made for them to feel cared about then it must be done.

Nashua Refurbishes Jairos Jiri Children's Centre Dorm, Calls For Partnerships

The European Union (EU) has granted €1 million to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in Zimbabwe to improve community-based surveillance at some of Zimbabwe’s busy borders and along the migration routes.
The project will take two years to complete, and it aims to improve the management of migrants and preparedness plans in urban areas. The project will strengthen IOM’s flow monitoring activities at borders, in border communities, and areas where migrants congregate at different stages of their migration journeys. In a joint Press statement issued yesterday, the EU and IOM Zimbabwe said:

IOM has, over the last two years, been working to strengthen capacities of frontline workers at four points of entry (PoEs) — Beitbridge, Plumtree, Chirundu and Forbes, to respond adequately to crises and attend to migrant needs, including post-arrival assistance, health, and protection assistance.
IOM will maintain protection assistance through counselling and referral services and will build on existing partnerships to provide government with the necessary technical assistance to craft contingency plans and standard operating procedures at PoEs and along the routes that migrants travel, to ensure a reinforced system of prevention, detection, and response to epidemics in Zimbabwe.

It will involve collecting and analysing migration data to provide a more comprehensive picture of the demographics, needs, and vulnerabilities of migrants. The data will inform government and development partners on the actions required to detect, prevent, and respond to public health threats that affect migrants in mainly urban areas and ensure that migrants have access to basic health services.
The project will reach over 15,000 migrant returnees and other mobile populations and will be implemented in Beitbridge, Masvingo, Bulawayo, Hurungwe, and Harare. The project will promote the health of urban citizens, migrants, and mobile populations through raising awareness of the migration dimension emergencies and strengthening the capacity of the government to respond rapidly to crises.

EU Grants €1M To IOM For Community-Based Surveillance In Zimbabwe

The United Nations (UN) has commended Zimbabwe’s contribution to peacekeeping missions across the world.
UN said the southern African country’s officers have made “a real difference wherever they have served,” reported <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/20-zimbabwean-officers-have-died-on-un-duty-world-body-says-deeply-grateful-for-zimbabwes-contribution-to-peacekeeping-missions/">NewZimbabwe</a> citing a statement by UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix. Zimbabwean peacekeepers have made a real difference wherever they have served.
They demonstrate true professionalism and commitment to the UN and the communities we support.
We are deeply grateful for their continued service and will never forget the sacrifice of the 20 Zimbabwean peacekeepers who have given their lives while serving the cause of peace under the UN flag.
They provide a greater sense of security to the local population and serve as role models to women and girls,” said Lacroix.
They also help strengthen the effectiveness of peacekeeping, as demonstrated by Zimbabwe’s Annah Chota, who was named UN Woman Police officer of the year in 2017.

Zimbabwe has consistently been among the top providers of women peacekeepers by percentage in recent decades.
In May this year <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/major-winnet-zharare-receives-united-nations-peacekeeping-award/">Major Winnet Zharare</a>, who served in South Sudan, was awarded the prestigious 2021 United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award with secretary general Secretary-General António Guterres describing her as a “role model and a trailblazer”.
Presently, nearly two-thirds of the country’s police officers, military staff officers and experts on mission are women.
Harare currently provides uniformed personnel to:

UN Commends Zimbabwe's Contribution To Peacekeeping Missions Across The World

The World Food Programme (WFP) has said it would only provide food aid to 20% of Zimbabwe’s 3.8 million hunger-stricken population.
Zimbabwe is among 20 countries deemed to be hunger hotspots following drought-induced poor harvests in the 2021-22 farming season.
The WFP says at the peak of the lean season, some families might be forced to skip meals, while others will have to sell livestock or other possessions to buy food. Said WFP in a statement:

While USAid Zimbabwe is supporting the lean season response, it has also pledged an additional US$9 million towards WFP’s food assistance for assets programme in 2023,” WFP said in a statement.
We will provide life-saving food in exchange for work on community assets like community gardens and dams. At the peak of the lean season, 3,8 million Zimbabweans will be food insecure. Climate change is one of the factors contributing to food insecurity. In order to get food, many will have to sell their livestock. While others will have to skip meals, this has negative effects on young children. Through the support from USAid, WFP will reach about 20% of those affected. Assistance will reduce the risk of further sliding into food insecurity.

The WFP statement comes as United States Agency for International Development (USAID) warned against the politicisation of food aid, according to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200002529/wfp-leaves-80-food-insecure-zimbos-exposed">NewsDay</a>.
USAID which has so far donated US$36 million worth of food to vulnerable rural communities said it would assist the WFP to provide assistance to about 700 000 people in eight districts that include Bikita, Buhera, Chivi, Hwedza, Mangwe, Mt Darwin, Mudzi and Nkayi.

WFP Says It Will Only Assist 20% Of Zimbabwe’s 3.8 million Hunger-stricken Population

The World Food Programme (WFP) has said it would only provide food aid to 20% of Zimbabwe’s 3.8 million hunger-stricken population.
Zimbabwe is among 20 countries deemed to be hunger hotspots following drought-induced poor harvests in the 2021-22 farming season.
The WFP says at the peak of the lean season, some families might be forced to skip meals, while others will have to sell livestock or other possessions to buy food. Said WFP in a statement:

While USAid Zimbabwe is supporting the lean season response, it has also pledged an additional US$9 million towards WFP’s food assistance for assets programme in 2023,” WFP said in a statement.
We will provide life-saving food in exchange for work on community assets like community gardens and dams. At the peak of the lean season, 3,8 million Zimbabweans will be food insecure. Climate change is one of the factors contributing to food insecurity. In order to get food, many will have to sell their livestock. While others will have to skip meals, this has negative effects on young children. Through the support from USAid, WFP will reach about 20% of those affected. Assistance will reduce the risk of further sliding into food insecurity.

The WFP statement comes as United States Agency for International Development (USAID) warned against the politicisation of food aid, according to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200002529/wfp-leaves-80-food-insecure-zimbos-exposed">NewsDay</a>.
USAID which has so far donated US$36 million worth of food to vulnerable rural communities said it would assist the WFP to provide assistance to about 700 000 people in eight districts that include Bikita, Buhera, Chivi, Hwedza, Mangwe, Mt Darwin, Mudzi and Nkayi.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is planning a food relief programme targeting 700 000 people in Zimbabwe from October as the effects of a poor harvest and the Ukraine war continue to show.
Zimbabwe’s government is working with agencies to provide food aid for 3.8 million people, the WFP said.
The southern African country has been struggling to feed itself since 2000 when former leader Robert Mugabe championed the seizure of white-owned farms to resettle landless Black people.
Zimbabwe’s government has said it expects its staple maize harvest to fall by almost half this year, to 1.56 million tonnes from last season’s multi-year record of 2.72 million tonnes, due to poor rainfall in the 2021-22 growing season.
The country requires 2.2 million tonnes of maize annually for human and livestock consumption.
WFP country representative Franscesca Erldelmann said they had budgeted $40 million for the food aid programme to cushion millions over the peak of the hunger season from October, when poor households run out of food stocks, to March when harvesting starts.
She said the number of food insecure people had shot up from 2.9 million to 3.8 million, warning that more households could go hungry as grain stocks dwindle.
Rising food prices, coupled with higher fuel costs after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, have driven Zimbabwe’s inflation from 61% in January to 285% in August, undermining President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s efforts to revive the country’s economy. 
Meanwhile, Public Service, Labour, and Social Welfare Minister Paul Mavima told Parliament in June that the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/govt-working-on-measures-to-mitigate-food-shortages/">had adequate grain in its strategic reserve</a> and would be able to provide the drought relief.

The Government of Japan has made an additional contribution of US$500 000.00 to the World Food Programme (WFP) to help alleviate food insecurity in Zimbabwe.
The contribution comes as many Zimbabweans are facing hunger following successive droughts and chronic economic challenges, aggravated by the impacts of the war in Ukraine. Said Satoshi Tanaka, Ambassador of Japan to Zimbabwe:

In collaboration with WFP, the people of Japan continue to support the most vulnerable in Zimbabwe to address their immediate food needs during the lean season. We hope that this assistance will help ease their hardship at a particularly difficult time of year.

Francesca Erdelmann, WFP Representative in the country said the funding comes at a critical time, with many vulnerable families struggling to put food on the table. She added:

Not only has poor rainfall during the recent growing season resulted in widespread crop failure, but prices of food, fuel and fertilizer have also surged due to the conflict in Ukraine. Families are now being forced to sell off livestock and other precious belongings to be able to buy food.
</blockquote>
The contribution from Japan will support food distributions during the start of the lean season, October to December 2022, when WFP aims to assist more than 400 000 people.
Since 2019, Japan has contributed over US$24.6 million to WFP-supported food assistance and resilience-building for vulnerable communities in Zimbabwe, as well as nutrition support for pregnant women in maternity waiting homes. 
In 2021, Japan contributed US$5.75 million through WFP to support vulnerable, food insecure communities in Zimbabwe that were severely impacted by climate shocks and COVID-19.
