Former Deputy Prime Minister (2009-2013), Thokozani Kupe, has announced that she has officially joined the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) led by Nelson Chamisa.
Khupe appeared at a conference wearing a yellow t-shirt branded CCC and Chamisa’s face. She urged “all of us to rally behind president Nelson Chamisa” ahead of the 2023 elections which she said will be a defining moment for Zimbabwe. Watch the video below for more:

The announcement which is made barely days before the 26 March by-elections, comes as the opposition party has been divided over whether to take Khupe on board or not.
Those who support the move, including Chamisa and Welshman Ncube, the party’s co-vice president, argue that Khupe has a “huge following” that cannot just be ignored.
They say CCC is for every citizen who desires real change.
On the other hand, others say Khupe is damaged goods based on allegations that she worked with the ruling ZANU PF during her time in MDC-T, the party which apparently fired her in January, to destroy the opposition in the country.

WATCH: Thokozani Khupe Joins Chamisa's CCC

Opposition Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) leader, Nelson Chamisa, has reached out to ZAPU and “all those in the other parties” to join with his party in a bid to dislodge the ruling ZANU PF from power.
Chamisa was addressing CCC supporters at the White City Stadium in Bulawayo where the party was campaigning for the 26 March by-elections and 2023 harmonised elections. He said:  
<blockquote>
We want to work with everyone progressive… People have been speaking on various platforms, but we are starting afresh… It’s no longer about parties. We’re saying to ZAPU let’s work together, … we’re saying to all those in the other parties, come and let’s work together. It’s not about positions, it’s about the change we want for the people of Zimbabwe. There is enough space for everyone. I know that a lot of you have said so and so but, no, we want to make sure that we build a citizens’ coalition for change.

He urged Zimbabweans to vote in the upcoming elections adding that it will be difficult to rig if enough people vote.
Chamisa makes the remarks when some CCC supporters, including some senior party officials, have made it clear that they do not want former Deputy Prime Minister, Thokozani Khupe, to have a coalition with the party.
They accuse her of working with the ruling ZANU PF to dismantle the opposition in the country.

"We Say To ZAPU, Everyone, Come, Let's Work Together," - Chamisa

Thokozani Khupe, the leader of a faction of the opposition MDC-T party is planning to form a coalition with the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).
Khupe, who met the CCC vice president Welshman Ncube over the weekend for informal talks, is convinced the ruling Zanu PF party can be defeated – but only if the opposition is united.
 Her Ntandoyenkosi Ndlovu told ZimLive on Wednesday:

We are of the view that to push out an authoritarian regime like Zanu PF, the opposition must unite and vote in numbers so that the will of the people is respected.
The recent events in Zambia have shown us that when opposition forces come together and unite, it is possible to effect change. You will also appreciate that in the upcoming by elections, the MDC-T took a principled and deliberate position not to field candidates because we don’t want to further split the opposition vote.

Following Khupe’s meeting with Ncube, some CCC supporters said she could not be trusted for collaborating with ZANU PF in the past, harming the opposition’s chances.
The CCC party’s leaders, however, reported;y view Khupe as an effective campaigner and are prepared to work with her in some capacity. 
ZimLive reports that discussions were held about the possibility of allowing her to run for MP while keeping her away from leadership roles in any of the party’s organs.
Before Khupe’s meeting with Ncube, secretary-general Charlton Hwende had reportedly held several discussions with her while CCC leader Nelson Chamisa is said to have encouraged the dialogue.
CCC deputy spokesman Gift Ostallos Siziba on Wednesday said Khupe was welcome to join the party as a member – if that is what she wants.
Khupe polled just over 45,000 votes in the presidential race in 2018, but her MDC-T party did some damage in parliamentary races in Matabeleland South and North through the splitting of votes.

The Government has given $14.9 million meant for the MDC Alliance to the MDC T led by Thokozani Khupe, the Daily News reports.
The funds disbursed through the Political Parties (Finance) Act are for 2020 according to Justice Ministry permanent secretary Vigirina Mabiza who said:
<blockquote>Yes, Zanu PF received $61 million and MDC $14,9 million. This is for 2020.</blockquote>
The Political Parties (Finance) Act states that:
<blockquote>Each political party whose candidates received at least five percentum of the total number of votes cast in the most recent general election shall be entitled to the same proportion of the total money appropriated as the total number of votes cast for its candidates in the election bears to the aggregate of votes cast for all political parties that qualify to be paid moneys in terms of this subsection,</blockquote>
Thokozani Khupe’s party the MDC T did not garner 5% in the 2018 elections and the outfit she now leads was not functional during the last election as it was reconstructed by the Supreme Court in March 2020.

Kennedy Kaitano writing for The Zimbabwean addressed a letter to MDC – T president Thokozani Khupe and said the judgement that ruled that Nelson Chamisa was not the rightful MDC president was an academic judgement that came a little too late or in his words “after the horse had already bolted”. 
Kaitano opined:
<blockquote>I join you in celebrating the Supreme Court endorsement of the High Court Judgement that ruled that the appointment of Advocate Nelson Chamisa as MDC-T Acting President shortly after the demise of the MDC founding President, Dr. Morgan Richard Tsvangirai was unconstitutional, and that you are the rightful Acting President of the MDC-T.

I have been listening to arguments by legal minds who are saying this judgement is enforceable and those who are saying it is not enforceable, and accept that both arguments are strong and should not be taken lightly. However, using the intelligence of a professional information analyst, I now concur with those who are saying this is just an academic judgement which is meant to be used for future such circumstances as in this case the judgement is coming after the horse has already bolted.
One major hurdle those saying the judgement is enforceable is that the constitution that has been used to make the judgement clearly stipulates that the President elected at the Extra-Ordinary Congress shall serve a term of office equivalent to the remaining term of the last elected President. Can you, therefore, Dr. Khupe stop for a while and remind yourself how many years were remaining for Dr. Tsvangirai to complete his term as MDC-T President after the 2014 Congress. Has that time frame not lapsed? The Court Judgement here may have been meant to test the reasoning of people who do not understand mathematics, those who, like Emmerson Mnangagwa will say 10 + 4 is equal to 40. 2014 plus 5 years is equal to 2019, so Dr. Tsvangirai’s term would have expired in 2019, simple mathematics.
Clever politicians should be looking into the future rather than waste time on judgments that are not enforceable. Dr. Khupe, have a serious think about this during the remaining period of the shutdown – thank God Coronavirus gave the opportunity for you to think carefully and plan the next move – and you acknowledged that in your speech in response to the judgement – and I thank God too that He gave you the wisdom not to rush things – unlike Advocate Douglas Mwonzora who couldn’t waste any time to call Morgan Komichi the Chairman of the MDC-T in violation of the very Supreme Court ruling which said the Party should go back to its 2014 structures, and the MDC-T Chairman at that point in 2014 was Comrade Lovemore Moyo. Advocate Mwonzora has clearly violated the Supreme Court ruling, and Dr. Khupe, if you are a follower of the rule of law as you have made the world believe, you should fire him for endorsing an “illegitimately appointed” Chairman who was elevated to the Chair during Advocate Chamisa’s time as Acting President. You should also fire Comrade Morgan Komichi for usurping the powers of the MDC-T 2014 Chairman, and went on to reinstate employees and officials who he claims were fired by the Party, some of them who may have been fired during his reign as “Chair”.
If you think the Supreme Court ruling is enforceable, after firing Advocate Mwonzora and Comrade Komichi, call in Comrade Lovemore Moyo and ask him if he find it making sense to call an extra ordinary Congress to replace Dr. Tsvangirai for the period from now to 2019 when Dr. Tsvagirai’s term ended, and if Comrade Moyo finds it making sense, then proceed to call for the Extra ordinary Congress, but given the reality that Dr. Tsvangirai’s term has already expired, you may have to call for a National Council meeting composed of members who were in council as elected at the 2014 Congress, and National Council will make the decision on the way forward. Otherwise if you proceed to unconstitutionally call for an Extra Ordinary Congress to elect someone whose term has long expired, you will be demonstrating the same dictatorial tendencies that you have accused others of.
I have said several times before that the best way would have been for you to talk to Advocate Chamisa about these things, even well before the Congress you held in Bulawayo in 2018. I continued to say if talking fails, you and Advocate Chamisa should kiss each other goodbye amicably, and all the advice fell on deaf ears. I reiterate that in my view, the Supreme Court judgement is an academic judgement that is only meant to be referred to in similar cases should they arise in future, but for now, you cannot shut the stable door as the horse has already bolted. Things have happened that cannot be reversed. Dr. Tsvangirai’s term expired in 2019 and the Supreme Court judgement clearly says the leader elected should be in office until 2019.

I will reiterate the point that academic judgments are sometimes made to test our thinking capacity.
