The government has released the school calendar for 2021. The calendar states that 2020’s first term starts on 4 January 2020 and ends on 25 March 2021.
The second term will begin on 3 May 2021 and end on 5 August 2021 while the third term will open on 6 September and close on 9 December.
The government has not shed more light on how schools will operate in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which is still not yet contained. Schools opened in phases in September with some classes going to school for 2 days instead of the usual 5 days.

A lobby group, the Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development (Zimcodd) has accused the government of throwing lenders and creditors under the bus and liberating debtors after the<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/01/21/full-text-supreme-court-judgment-on-debts-incurred-before-22nd-feb-2019/"> supreme court ruled that all debts incurred during the 1:1 era were to be settled on the 1:1 basis using local currency</a>, Newsday reports.
The lobby group urged the government to inherit the debt emanating from this ruling. Said Zimcodd in a statement:
<blockquote>The government should take full responsibility over the losses incurred due to this policy change, which is escalating into disputes and conflicts among individuals and companies.
There is need for the government to take serious consideration of the detrimental effects of this move on businesses to avoid further damage to an already ailing economy,
The court ruling is borne out of the long-standing currency crisis and it is critical for the government to address the currency issue once and for all.</blockquote>

Government Should Take Full Responsibility Over The Losses Incurred Due To The 1:1 Policy Change

The leaders of the AMALGAMATED Rural Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) are preparing a lawsuit against the government after going for three months without receiving their salaries.
They last received their salaries in mid-January earlier this year and since then the Public Service Commission withheld their salaries following the January protests.
The Artuz president Obert Masaraure, secretary-general Robson Chere and the union’s Mashonaland West chairperson Munyaradzi Ndawana were arrested for taking part in the protest and they have not reported for duty since they were in detention. PSC, therefore, withheld their salaries on the basis of absenteeism.
Masaraure also explained how families of the union leaders have dealt with hard times because of no salaries.
<blockquote>“The families of these teachers are failing to access basic goods such as food, clothes, shelter and transport to work, among others, like healthcare and paying school fees for their children. Actually, when schools open next term, their children will not be able to go there because of financial constraints deliberately brought by the employer,” he said.
“If a teacher, who is earning a salary, can fail to meet basic living expenses, what about one who is going to work, but not being paid for about three months?”
Masaraure revealed that efforts to engage the employer amicably had failed, hence the move to go to court.
“We have been pursuing dialogue with the employer to resolve the impasse, but nothing is coming out. That is why we have engaged our lawyer to take legal action,” he said.</blockquote>

ARTUZ Leaders Prepare Lawsuit Against Government

Addressing journalists at Morgan Tsvangirai House in Harare today, MDC Alliance Presidential candidate Nelson Chamisa said he will not fire Government officials.
He said the MDC Alliance government will be inclusive and will only change the way how Government is run. Said Chamisa:
<blockquote>Let me just take this opportunity to also say there are a lot of people in Government who are worried about their future. This Government we are forming is a Government for everyone. What we are changing is the leadership of Government not the bureaucracy of Government. We are not touching the bureaucracy, we are just reorienting the bureaucracy to make sure they are consistent with the dictates of good governance.</blockquote>

We Will Not Fire You: Chamisa Assures Govt Officials

In emailed responses to FinX, an online-based service the International Monetary Fund (IMF) expressed reservations on Government’s plans to issue $600 million worth of Treasury Bills to clear debts owed to Zesa Holdings by local authorities and state authorities.
Said IMF:
<blockquote>The weak financial performance of SOEs (State-owned enterprises) in Zimbabwe constitutes a drain on the Government budget and a significant drag on growth.
Intra-public sector arrears complicate efforts to improve governance and financial discipline. Making progress requires ending the continuous recapitalisations of SOEs by the Government.
The need for the Government to recapitalise SOEs or clear arrears becomes particularly problematic when the fiscal deficit is significant and domestic debt is on a sharp upward trend.
So while dealing with existing arrears is important, it should take place in the context of broader reforms, such as developing an electricity tariff structure that allows ZESA to return to cost-recovery, and improving the governance and oversight of the SOEs. SOEs should enhance their management and operations and prevent the build-up of future liabilities.</blockquote>

IMF expresses reservations on Govt’s plan to issue $600 million worth of Treasury Bills to clear Zesa debts

Zimplats has said that the Zimbabwean Government has made fresh attempts to seize its mining land after receiving a new notice on January 13 giving the company 30 days to lodge an objection.
This is the third time since February 2012 that the government has issued a notice to seize 27 948 ha of mining ground from Zimplats, the country’s biggest platinum producer which owns a total of 48 535 ha in mining claims. In its third-quarter results statement, the company said that it was consulting Government on the issue while Mines Minister Walter Chidhakwa did not answer his mobile phone when contacted for comment by Reuters.
However, Government has previously defended the decision to seize Zimplats land, saying the miner had an excessive amount of land and it wanted to distribute the claims to new companies.

Govt in fresh attempt to seize Zimplats' mining land

The Zimbabwe Independent reports that, Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko admitted at a high-level meeting held on 20 December 2016, that cabinet is made up thieves and called for the dissolution of the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC).
Said Mphoko:
<blockquote>Mr President, Zacc must be disbanded. They have become a political tool for some among us. Why is Zacc going after one minister when this room is full of thieves? There are thieves all over in this room.</blockquote>
Government officials who attended the meeting told the publication that a stunned Mugabe chuckled, but did not respond. Higher Education Minister Jonathan Moyo is being pursued by Zacc over the alleged abuse of over US$400 000 from the Zimbabwe Manpower Development Fund (Zimdef). It has since emerged that some of the funds were used to fund Zanu PF activities and projects in his Tsholotsho North constituency. Mphoko and Moyo are believed to be key members of the G40 faction.
