<h2>Full statement by the Law Society of Zimbabwe on the escalation of political violence in the country.</h2>
<blockquote>
The Law Society of Zimbabwe, notes with grave concern reports of what seems to be an escalation of political violence in some parts of the country.
A particular incident is of a recording that is circulating on social media showing some senior citizens being beaten up for what appears to be their choice of political affiliation in Mashonaland East’s Murewa district.
While police have indicated publicly that they are investigating the case and have issued an update on the progress made to date, it is important that stakeholders raise the red flag immediately in order to have such deplorable conduct nipped in the bud. This is even more so given that we are in an election year.
The outbreak of violence is disconcerting to anyone who wishes Zimbabwe well. The scourge of political violence has continued to be a blot on our electoral processes for decades and given indications of political will to end it, it is important that decisive action be taken now to end it.
The Law Society of Zimbabwe on behalf of the profession, calls on all political leaders to commit to non-violence not only in word but also in deed.
Insincere public pronouncements against political violence will not end the vice. Politicians must stop speaking with forked tongues, declaring a commitment to a violent free election by day while coaxing their supporters to terrorise citizens by night.
Zimbabwe now more than ever needs its leaders across the political divide to show maturity and leadership.
If the country is to reap the rewards of the country’s engagement and re-engagement thrust as espoused by the government, it is important that all actions are synchronised to achieve the goals of this policy.
The right to political choice is deeply engrained in our constitution and no one has a right to vary it at a whim.
We urge police to act with speed to bring to account those implicated in the Murewa violence as a way of sending a clear message to all and sundry against such actions.

Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for East and Southern Africa, Flavia Mwangovya, has condemned the brutal attacks against opposition Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) supporters by suspected ZANU PF activists in Murewa North recently.
Mwangovya described the attacks as “callous” and urged the Zimbabwean government to ensure that the upcoming general elections are held in a peaceful environment. Said Mwangovya:

This callous, politically motivated attack against older people who had simply attended a gathering for a political opposition party is outrageous.
Such cruel acts of violence, which have repeatedly marred Zimbabwe’s political landscape in the past, gravely threaten the rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly.
These attacks are clearly intended to harass and intimidate members of the political opposition in the months leading up to Zimbabwe’s upcoming election and could have a chilling effect throughout the country.
The Zimbabwean authorities must take all necessary steps to prevent acts of politically motivated violence and refrain from issuing inflammatory statements that could incite similar attacks or deter people from expressing support for the political parties of their choice.
Authorities must launch a thorough, independent and impartial investigation and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.

Amnesty International Condemns "Callous" Attacks Against CCC Supporters In Murewa

Former teacher, Chris Walker, of Great Horton, Bradford, has returned to the United Kingdom following a week-long charity visit to Zimbabwe.
Walker taught in Zimbabwe from 1989 to 1991 and now runs a charity which supports underprivileged children there.
He founded a charity organisation named Friends of Pakati that supports Pakati Secondary School and Pakati Primary School in rural Murewa.
Walker established Pakati to help young people in Murewa who have less access to resources.
Speaking to the <a href="https://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/23049190.chris-walker-friends-pakati-returns-zimbabwe-visit/">Telegraph &amp; Argus</a> after he returned to Bradford last week after donating laptops, t-shirts and football shirts to the schools, Walker said:

I really enjoyed the week I spent there. We donated to five schools in total, and I got the chance to visit all of them. We also celebrated Pakati for restoring solar power at the schools.
</blockquote>
During his week-long visit to Zimbabwe, Walker was hosted by Friends of Pakati representative Lorraine Mapuranga – a former student of his – who allowed him to stay in her home while he was there.
His translator was Mr Mundodzi, an English teacher at the school who is blind.
While in Zimbabwe, Chris also delivered an assembly to the students – something he had not done there since August 1991.
He also gave out Scunthorpe United scarves and shirts to staff and students.
Scunthorpe United Football Club is a professional association football club based in the town of Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, England.
Walker also visited nearby Chanetsa primary and secondary schools and Mapanga Primary as part of his visit. He said:

British Former Teacher Donates To Schools In Rural Murewa

A former teacher from Bradford, United Kingdom, arrived at his former school in Zimbabwe on Wednesday, 21 September, as his fundraising campaign for underprivileged young people continues.
Chris Walker, who lives in Great Horton, is in rural Murewa, Mashonaland East Province, where he is supporting Pakati secondary and primary schools.
Walker taught at Pakati Secondary School between 1989 and 1991.
In the UK, he used to teach at Royd Mount Middle School in Thornton and Marshfield Primary.
Walker now runs the charity Friends of Pakati, through which he has donated laptops, polo shirts and football kits to the two schools.
He is still appealing for more funds to help the young people in rural Murewa. Walker said:

We have been very fortunate to have received a number of donations, which I am now transporting to Zimbabwe.
But we are still looking for more funds to complete the solar repairs at Pakati Primary School.
So far, we have raised £168 of the £600 we need.
The solar panels need replacing, and the lack of power is a real problem for both schools.

British Man Who Taught In Rural Murewa Returns To Former School

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Thursday commissioned the Murewa District Registry offices at Murewa growth point in Mashonaland East province.
The new centre is meant to benefit people from Mutoko, Mudzi, Uzumba, Maramba, Pfungwe and Goromonzi districts among others.
In his address after officially opening the offices, Mnangagwa said communities in the districts will have access to quality and efficient national registry services. He said:

In the spirit of the Devolution and decentralization policy, my Government prioritised Murewa District Office so that our communities in this part of Mashonaland East will have access to quality and efficient national registry services.
Vital civil registration documents such as the birth certificate and National ID card are important in the life of every person as these depict the inalienable right to a name, family, citizenship and nationality.
I challenge the Ministry and its partners to speedily establish more of these e-passport and bio-enrollment centres in other cities and districts, in the shortest possible time.
Traditional leaders and communities as a whole are called upon to work together to ensure every child is facilitated to acquire a birth certificate and national ID card documents.
This is more critical as the Government scales up efforts to guarantee and protect the rights of children so that they ultimately realise their full potential.

President Mnangagwa Commissions Murewa District Registry Offices

The family of Tapiwa Makore, a 7-year-old Murewa boy who was allegedly murdered by his uncle and his herdsman in September last year has rejected a state-assisted funeral to bury the remains of their son.
Tapiwa is set to be buried on Saturday (tomorrow) at the Makore family home in Murewa.
The Makore family spokesperson Beular Musupai said a state-assisted funeral was of no benefit to the family when police have not concluded their investigations and the suspects have not been tried and convicted. She said:
<blockquote>What is more painful as a family is, we are burying the remains of Tapiwa without his head which is a first in our family and community to lay to rest a half body.
This is the 7th month since his death and our queries have not been answered by the relevant authorities, why it has taken so long to concluded investigations.
Doors have completely been shut in our face as we seek to find answers on investigations. So as a family we have agreed that we do not need any state-assisted funeral to bury the remains of our child without his head.
What is so important about the state-assisted funeral at this hour of burial. We do not need any assistance to bury his remains. We will use the little resources that we have.
For seven months, where has the state been and it wants to assist us now when they cannot assist with answers on how the investigations are going.</blockquote>
Tapiwa was murdered by his uncle and namesake Tapiwa Makore (Snr) with the assistance of his herdboy Tafadzwa Shamba for alleged ritual purposes.
Musupayi earlier said the Makore family <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/makore-family-to-limit-mourners-at-tapiwas-burial/">will have to limit the number of mourners</a> at the boy’s burial in line with COVID-19 protocols.

Makore Family Rejects State-assisted Funeral For Tapiwa

Zimbabwe Republic Police national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi has said they have brought in a traditional healer who is implicated in the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/10/05/new-details-emerge-on-murewa-ritual-murder/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Murewa ritual murder of 7-year-old Tapiwa Makore.</a>
The hunt for the healer started when the boy’s uncle, Tapiwa Makore (Senior) and his own domestic worker, Tafadzwa Shamba, suspects in the case, were arrested last month and implicated the healer.
Nyathi however did not disclose the name of the traditional healer. He also suggested that they had been fed with the wrong information while some sources are hiding crucial information. He said:
<blockquote>We have realised that some people are not telling the truth and they are hiding crucial information. But we will surely get to the bottom of the matter and the truth will come out.</blockquote>
The boy has been missing for days and some body parts were discovered in the village being eaten by dogs while the head was missing.
A head believed to be of a 12-year-old boy was later discovered in the village but tests indicated that it did not belong to Tapiwa suggesting that some murder cases were not being reported.
Nyathi said a forencis analysis was being conducted on the head adding that no report of a missing person falling in that category had been made so far.

Traditional Healer Probed Over Murewa Ritual Murder

Tafadzwa Shamba who confessed to killing Tapiwa Makore, a 7-year-old Murewa boy has led police to the recovery of the boy’s legs in a pit latrine.
Tapiwa was murdered two weeks ago in a suspected ritual case and police have so far arrested Mashamba and Tapiwa’s uncle Tapiwa Makore senior.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is still searching for other body parts including the head which is believed to have been given to an alleged sangoma who is still at large. Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi told the Daily News on Sunday:
<blockquote>The ZRP confirms that in the on-going investigations in connection with the gruesome murder of…Makore, two legs were recovered in a pit toilet near a village football pitch in Murewa on October 2. Police are yet to recover the skull and hands.
The suspect, Tafadzwa, led to the recovery of the legs. He indicated that he dumped the legs in the toilet, which led to it being dug up.</blockquote>
Cases of child murder which are allegedly for ritual purposes have been on the rise in the country prompting President Mnangagwa to raise concern over the murders.

New Details Emerge On Murewa Ritual Murder

A 16-year-old, form 2 student, from Nyamashato Secondary School in Murewa, hanged herself using a necktie. The girl is reported to have become despondent after her boyfriend dumped her following threats from school authorities. The girl was having an affair with a classmate and when the school authorities discovered it they reprimanded the two, leading to the boyfriend dumping her.
The incident was reported to the police who took the body to the Murewa District Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
