President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called for political tolerance among politicians ahead of the 2023 elections.
He made the call while delivering his State of the Nation Address (SONA) at the new multimillion-dollar six-story Parliament building gifted by China. He said:

Political players, seeking the people’s mandate during the upcoming 2023 elections must maintain and consolidate the peace, unity, harmony and love that we have built under the second republic. Violent confrontations have never been part of our culture.
</blockquote>
Zimbabwe is scheduled to hold harmonised elections sometime in 2023.
Reports of intra-party and interparty violence have been rising since March this year when by-elections were held for several posts that were vacant.
The opposition Citizens Coalition for Change led by Nelson Chamisa, a former Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services claims that the ruling ZANU PF has been attacking and murdering its people to intimidate them ahead of elections.
One of the unresolved cases is that of slain CCC activist <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Moreblessing_Ali">Moreblessing Ali</a> who was abducted and killed earlier this year.
Her remains are yet to be buried amid reports that her family is in hiding following threats from suspected ZANU PF members.
Mnangagwa’s remarks come after some of his lieutenants, including former Minister of State Security, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Owen_Ncube">Owen Ncube</a>, threatened that <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/owen-ncube-threatens-worse-than-2008-political-violence-against-sell-outs/">2023 could be worse than 2008.</a>
In 2008, the ruling ZANU PF in collaboration with state security forces allegedly attacked and killed several opposition MDC members in the run-up to the run-off election.
Analysts have warned the 2023 poll could be one of the disputed elections if violence continues to escalate.

SONA: President Mnangagwa Calls For Political Tolerance Ahead Of 2023 Elections

Minister of Home Affairs and Culture, Obert Mpofu has assured Zimbabweans who sought refuge in Botswana after escaping the political violence that characterised the 2008 election re-run period, that it is safe to return home.
Mpofu said he recently visited Botswana and met the Zimbabweans who want assurances that they will not be attacked again. He said Government was working with Botswana and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to repatriate the refugees. Said Mpofu
<blockquote>There are about 686 Zimbabweans who sought refuge in Botswana. I saw most of them and they mainly hail from Matabeleland South, Matabeleland North and Bulawayo and just a few from other provinces such as Midlands. Most of them left the country in 2008. They said they left the country escaping political violence during the election re-run period. These people say they want to return home but feared for their safety. They want some assurances. Some of them said their homes have been destroyed and are seeking assistance to rebuild them. I’m constantly in touch with some of them. Some of them are already coming. "It's Safe To Return": Govt Assures Zimbos Who Sought Refuge In Botswana Due To Political Violence

Social media users are using the hashtag, #Remembering2008, to share their stories after President Emmerson Mnangagwa told the Economist Magazine that 2008 elections were free and fair. <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/03/05/2008-elections-free-fair-no-evidence-violence-says-president-mnangagwa/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Mnangagwa also blithely claimed that there was no violence at all as there are no police cases of violence which were reported</a>. This is despite the fact that the late prime minister and founding member of the opposition MDC-T Morgan Tsvangirai was forced to withdraw from the run-off election citing the egregious violence which was being meted out to his supporters.

Victims Share Horrors From 2008 Using #Remembering2008 After Mnangagwa Claims Elections Were Free, Fair and Violence Free

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been severely criticised by the opposition for claiming that the 2008 Elections were free and fair. In an interview with the Economist, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/03/05/2008-elections-free-fair-no-evidence-violence-says-president-mnangagwa/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Mnangagwa also blithely claimed that there was no violence during the 2008 Elections and that no reports had been filed with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP</a>). Unsurprisingly. his comments did not go down well his opponents and po0litical analysts. Here is what some of them said:
Douglas Mwonzora, MDC-T Secretary-General said,
<blockquote>…This means this year’s elections won’t be free and fair if the President lies about the 2008 election. It is on record that Tsvangirai withdrew from that election because of violence, the regional body SADC and the international community condemned that election too.</blockquote>
Elton Mangoma, presidential candidate for the Coalition for Democrats (CODE) said,
<blockquote>…It shows his standard. If he considers 2008 elections, which were condemned by the international community to be fair, then it means we are talking about different things. It seems he is going to repeat what happened in 2008</blockquote>
Transform Zimbabwe leader, Jacob Ngarivhume added,
<blockquote>He knows the truth about 2008. He presided over the JOC [Joint Operations Command], which committed serious crimes when they tried to express themselves and it’s unfortunate that he is saying there is no violence. This is pathetic and disgusting</blockquote>

Mnangagwa Condemned For Claiming 2008 Elections Were Free, Fair and Violence Free. Opposition Fears Repeat

MDC leader Welshman Ncube has said that the late former prime minister and leader of the opposition MDC-T, Morgan Tsvangirai, died without any bitterness as he had forgiven the people who tormented him and blocked him from becoming president. Speaking at a rally to celebrate Tsvangirai’s life, Ncube said that the veteran opposition leader had forgiven former president Robert Mugabe and the military, which he termed “coup leaders” for robbing Tsvangirai of the presidency after the 2008 election. Said Ncube,
<blockquote>…we are also celebrating Tsvangirai’s life, a life which was so rich, so diverse. I want to remind you that Tsvangirai won the 2008 presidential election. He did not get the 47% as claimed by the electoral commission. He got more than that, that is why it took them six weeks to rig, and that is why I always say Zimbabwe’s first coup was in 2008, not in November last year. It was a pre-emptive coup. When they removed Mugabe, they already had experience, but Tsvangirai forgave them.
The 2008 coup leaders are the same that removed Mugabe last year, but Tsvangirai had long forgiven them for robbing him of the presidency. He had no bitterness at all, he had no grudge against them, no bitterness that over the years they vilified him, arrested him, beat him and laid treason charges against him. He was selfless.</blockquote>
Tsvangirai who died last Wednesday in South Africa after succumbing to cancer will be buried in his rural home in Buhera today.

Presidential candidate for the 2018 harmonised elections Dr Nkosana Moyo has claimed that Zimbabweans betrayed MDC-T President Morgan Tsvangirai in the 2008 elections when Tsvangirai beat Robert Mugabe in the first round. Moyo claimed that Zimbabweans betrayed Tsvangirai by allowing President Robert Mugabe to tamper with the election results. The results for the Presidential election were released almost two months after the election. Speaking at the launch of his candidature, Moyo said:
<blockquote>Now that I think we know that Morgan Tsvangirai supposedly won that election (2008), but instead of Zimbabweans saying that we are not accepting anybody doing anything else with our results, we collectively let it happen.
Do not say Morgan Tsvangirai sold out, but it is us, we Zimbabweans who messed up and once we take that responsibility we will be able to mend our mistake.</blockquote>

Mujuru challenged on how she can be trusted when Zanu PF beat up and killed people when she was VP

Last Saturday Zanu-PF Masvingo Provincial chairperson Ezra Chadzamira claimed that voting for the opposition is a waste of time in Zimbabwe, saying that elections are only for identifying people against the ruling party. He gave an example of MDC-T President Morgan Tsvangirai saying that even though he won the 2008 elections he was unable to rule. Said Chadzamira at a Zanu PF inter-district meeting held at Rutenga Primary School:
<blockquote>Sarudzo idzi kungoitawo asi chinangwa chaicho ndochokuona panenge pane matsosti akawanda asinga vhoti zvakanaka. Tsvangirai zvaaka vhoterwa muna 2008 akaitonga nyika? kuState house akanga asinga kuzivi? (Elections here are not genuine but are simply a way of identifying those who choose to vote wrongly. When Tsvangirai won elections in 2008, did he rule the country? Was he not aware of the route to the State House?</blockquote>
Chadzamira also accused outsiders of looting Masvingo’s resources saying:

Midlands senator Morgen Komichi said that more mass graves of people killed in the post-2008 election violence have been discovered in Gokwe.
Said Komichi:
<blockquote>This past week I was in Chireya and I was shown 12 graves. From there, I went to Nembudziya where I was shown 12 graves. When you talk about political campaigns or elections, there is fear in them because they associate it with violence. We also know that there are some people who are denied food hand-outs which come from the State because they are labelled as people who belong to a wrong party.</blockquote>
In February this year, Mashonaland East MDC Senator Jane Chifamba urged government to exhume bodies allegedly buried in a mass grave in Marondera.

NPP spokesperson, Jealousy Mawarire dismisses as 'fake news' that Joice Mujuru admitted to rigging 2008 elections for Zanu PF

MDC-T spokesperson Obert Gutu told NewZimbabwe.com his party is considering suing Zanu PF for acts of violence, rape, arson and other crimes targeted at the main opposition supporters during the 2008 presidential run-off election.
Said Gutu:
<blockquote>As a political party, we are certainly exploring the possibility of mounting a class action to seek appropriate legal relief for the victims of the 2008 Presidential election run-off and other excesses committed against our party cadres by the Zanu PF regime’s agents over the years.</blockquote>
Gutu said this following Wednesday’s High Court ruling paving way for Citizens Against Violence And Anarchy Trust (CAVAAT) to sue the National Electoral Reform Agenda (NERA) on behalf of businesses and individuals for lost and damaged property last year.
