Africa University (AU) inaugurated Reverend Professor Peter Mageto as the university’s fifth Vice-Chancellor on Saturday, 22 October, while also celebrating its 30th anniversary.
Vice Chancellor Rev Prof Mageto replaces the late Prof Munashe Furusa who died in 2021.
Rev Prof Mageto, who is from Kenya, was Africa University’s interim Vice Chancellor since the death of Prof Furusa.
The new VC was presented with the institution’s symbols which included a mace, medallion, and logo.
The inauguration and anniversary celebrations were done at the institution’s campus.
In giving his inaugural address, Rev Prof Mageto expressed gratitude to the United Methodist Church for sponsoring his education. He said:

I am grateful to the United Methodist Church for awarding me grants and scholarships for my education. Had it not been for that, I would not be here today.

Africa University Inaugurates New Vice Chancellor

Acting Chief Mutasa (67) is among the first 20 students that have enrolled for the Bachelor of Law Degree at Africa University (AU).
The United Methodist Church-run institution opened its School of Law early this week.
Chief Mutasa, born Lovemore Mutasa, expects to complete the LLB programme when he turns 72. He said:
<blockquote>
I am looking forward to helping my fellow chiefs in getting a better understanding of the law processes in the country.
I really want to urge traditional leaders across the country to take up Law. Age is nothing but a number.
We can do it with determination and willpower. It will help us in our line of work.
My thinking is that at some point, I will be able to open my own law firm.
That law firm will help many children to train and enhance their understanding of the law.
</blockquote>
Chief Mutasa has already undertaken training as a presiding officer of community courts with the University of South Africa (UNISA), as well as the University of Zimbabwe Magistrates’ Admission examination.
He is looking to further his education when he completes his Bachelor of Law Degree at AU. He said:

I want to attain a Masters’ Degree in Child Rights. I am very passionate about ending child marriages and this is one sure way of enhancing my understanding of the dynamics around child marriages.
</blockquote>
Chief Mutasa has written a book on child marriages entitled “A collection of articles on ending child marriages”.
In January 2018, Chief Murinye, born Ephias Munodawafa, obtained a Bachelor of Law Degree from the University of Zimbabwe.

Age Is Nothing But A Number, Says Chief Mutasa (67) As He Enrols For Law Degree

Africa University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Munashe Furusa has died. He passed away this Wednesday morning.
Professor Furusa’s death was announced by the university’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Mageto in a statement this morning. The statement read:
<blockquote>A dark cloud has passed over the valley of dreams this morning as we have learnt with shock, dismay and heartache of the passing of our beloved Vice-Chancellor Professor Munashe Furusa.
We implore all of you to pray for and keep at the foremost of your minds and hearts his wife, Dr Zanele Furusa, the entire Furusa family and the university community.
As we mourn a great leader who inspired, motivated, and moved all of us to become the best versions of ourselves, we cherish the memories, transformative work, and powerful moments that we were honoured to share with him.

Africa University Vice Chancellor, Professor Munashe Furusa Has Died

Africa University’s founding chancellor Professor John Wesley Zvamunondiita Kurewa has died. The news of his death was posted on the uni’s Facebook Page. Prof Kurewa died in Harare yesterday according to the university. He was still teaching at the University at the time of his death.

The Africa University community has learnt with great shock and sadness the passing on of the university’s Founding Father Professor John Wesley Zvamunondiita Kurewa who passed on in Harare this morning. Professor Kurewa is credited for having worked tirelessly to obtain the Africa University Charter which led to the establishment of the first private university in Zimbabwe at a time when the idea of private universities was not readily acceptable. 
He served as the first Vice Chancellor of the university and then continued to serve as a lecturer in the Institute of Theology and Religious Studies until his untimely death. Professor Kurewa will be greatly missed by those across the continent and the world whose lives were impacted in many ways by his selfless service and sacrifice. May his dear soul rest in eternal peace!</blockquote>

A Comprehensive List Of Mugabe's Degrees

Africa University has hiked tuition fees for undergraduate and graduate students.
In a notice to students issued on 19 July 2019, the United Methodist Church-run institution wrote:
<blockquote>We write to you with regards the above-mentioned matter [RTGS/ZWL Fee Structure For 2019/2020 Academic Year] following the pronouncement of the Statutory Instrument 142/2019 which banned the multicurrency system and saw the introduction of the RTGS/ZWL.
Before the events that took place this year, the university has been charging fees in United States Dollars (USD) for both local and international students.
In alignment with new government policy and following consultations with our board of directors and the Student Representative Council Executive, we write to advise of the fees in RTGS/ZWL.
According to the notice, Tuition Fees for undergraduate students for the 1st and 2nd semester of the academic year 2019/2020 are RTGS/ZWL$3 920. This does not include accommodation.
Accommodation fees have been set at RTGS/ZWL$2 400 for both the 1st and 2nd semester.</blockquote>

Africa University Hikes Tuition Fees To RTGS$4 000 Per Semester

Africa University has increased tuition fees by 40 percent for students paying in RTGS dollars.
The University announced the increase in a statement to its students which also affect accommodation, health and technology fees. The increase will see students paying $2 740 per semester, up from $2 150. The fees remain unchanged for students who pay their fees in US dollars. Part of the notice reads:
<blockquote>We write to you with regards the above mentioned matter. Following consultations with our 
Board of Directors and The Student Representative Council Executive, we write to advise of the fees review for those paying in RTGS Bond. While efforts were made to see how we could contain costs, the market has remained volatile with price escalations. In keeping with our promise of providing you with world class education that is impactful, transformative and relevant we had to take this route in order to maintain our service quality levels. In light of the above, we would like to take this opportunity to inform you, our most important and valued stakeholder, of a 40% fees adjustment</blockquote>
After the 40 percent fees hike, undergraduate students paying in RTGS will now pay tuition fees amounting to $1 960, accommodation $560 health $350 and technology fee of $140.
