Warring Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe (AFM) factions led by Amon Madawo and Cossam Chiangwa have finally buried the hatchet after the latter received recognition from AFM International.
The two factions have agreed to co-exist but using separate names. The Madawo-led faction retains the name Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe while the Chiangwa-led church adopted the Apostolic Faith Mission of Zimbabwe name.
The battle to control AFM started in 2018, with the courts later ruling in favour of the Madawo-led faction which allowed it to take control of all church properties.
Speaking during an interview with <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/afm-factions-smoke-the-peace-pipe">The Sunday Mail</a> on Saturday, Chiangwa said he was happy following his faction’s acceptance by AFM International. He said:
<blockquote>
We are happy to say that we have been legitimised by the international body, as it means that we now have firm legal status.
Yes, we lost all properties and we have been worshipping in tents, but we are happy that we still have a large following.
We might not have buildings but we have had Jesus on our side, and it is the same Jesus who has now given us international recognition.
</blockquote>
He said international endorsement has proved that his faction was right in resisting changes to the AFM constitution. Said Chiangwa:
<blockquote>
Reverend Madawo is not a rival, but we did not agree on the amendment of the church’s constitution.
We felt that their stance did not comply with AFM International’s constitution and we have been vindicated.
</blockquote>
Madawo congratulated the Chiangwa-led Apostolic Faith Mission of Zimbabwe for getting international recognition. He said:
<blockquote>
AFM in Zimbabwe congratulates the other AFM of Zimbabwe for being accepted to the fellowship of AFM International.
Any decision that enhances and promotes the spread of the gospel of reconciliation and peace is accepted by our congregation.
We do not stand in the way of anyone being endorsed by AFM International.
</blockquote>
At the time of the split of the church in 2018, Madawo held the post of general secretary, while Chiangwa was vice president. Aspher Madziyire was the president.

AFM Factions Finally Make Peace As Madawo Congratulates Chiangwa

MDC Alliance legislator for Zengeza West, Job Sikhala, this Wednesday poposed that churches be allowed to host over 100 congregants in one service if they have enough room for huge gatherings.
The government allowed churches to resume their worshipping services warning that congregants should not exceed 100.
The directive which was meant to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic has an adverse impact on big churches including ZAOGA, Makandiwa’s UFIC, AFM, Magaya’s PHD which have hundreds of members at one assembly.
Churches had resorted to having more than one service to accommodate all congregants. They now use electricity and venues for more hours which means they need to pay more for those resources.
Speaking in the National Assembly this Wednesday, Sikhala said some churches have big auditoriums which can accommodate over 100 worshippers even when observing the social distancing recommendation.
Responding to the suggestion, the Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Ziyambi Ziyambi, said churches should write to the COVID-19 task force stating how they intend to do that.
The minister added that if the churches’ case is compelling, they will probably be allowed to have over 100 worshippers in one service.
He emphasised that the legislation in place currently forbids gatherings of more than 100 people despite the size of venue.

CHURCHES: MPs Want Number Of Congregants Reviewed

The Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) church led by Reverend Madawo has announced the postponement of ‘all’ conferences that were scheduled to be held in various parts of the country and Chattsworths (Rufaro) in Masvingo.
The church was scheduled to have The National Youth Conference for the period 2- 6 April 2020 at Rufaro Conference Centre, The National Ladies’ Conference for the period 23- 26 April 2020 at Rufaro Conference Centre. The notice read in part:
<blockquote>The National Response to the novel strain of the Corona Virus that causes Covid 19 as pronounced by the Zimbabwean President, His Excellency E D Mnangagwa has given rise to the need for the National Executive Board of the Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe to supplement its earlier statement dated Tuesday, 17 March 2020. FULL TEXT: Apostolic Faith Mission In Zimbabwe (AFM) Postpones All Conferences

Reverend Amon Madawo, leader of the Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe has said that his team has not closed doors to members who want to rejoin them.
The Bishop speaks a few days after the High Court ruled that he was the legitimate leader of the church.
AFM has been marred by conflicts since 2016 when the side led by Reverend Madawo, then led by Reverend Aspher Madziyire, embarked on a Constitutional reform process.
The development sparked controversy with the side led by Reverend Cossam Chiyangwa arguing that the process was unconstitutional hence null and void. Speaking to H-Metro, Reverend Madawo said:
<blockquote>When we were elected into office in November 2018 I made a plea for reconciliation and unity in the church, I am still repeating my words, this is still our position as AFM in Zimbabwe. To everyone who left the church, to everyone who followed pastor Chiangwa our hands are still open for reconciliation the doors of the church are open for them, this includes pastors, elders and congregants alike.</blockquote>
He added that some unsuspecting members of the church were led astray by leaders. His message is in sync with the pledge he made when he was elected by his side in 2018 to lead the church.
Meanwhile, the side led by Bishop Chiangwa has since appealed against the High Court ruling at the Supreme Court.

"Pastors, Elders & Congregants Free To Come Back" - Rev Amon Madawo

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Apostolic_Faith_Mission_in_Zimbabwe">Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe</a> (AFM) faction led by Reverend Cossam Chiangwa has appealed the High Court Ruling at the Supreme Court. The High Court had ruled in <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/05/high-court-rules-in-favour-of-reformers-in-afm-church-dispute/">favour of the Aspher Madziyire-led group</a> on the 4th of this month.
The Court observed that Bishop Aspher Madziyire is the legitimate head of the Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) Church contrary to what Rev Chiangwa’s side was alleging.

Chiangwa Led AFM Faction Reject High Court Ruling, Approach Supreme Court

Gospel music couple of Pastor Charles and Mai Olivia Charamba have left Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe church to form their own church Rooted in Christ Ministries that will have its launch service at the Zimbabwe College of Music on Sunday.
Pastor Charles Charamba confirmed the development in an interview with The Herald. Said Charamba:
<blockquote>We have officially left the AFM after several considerations that followed a call to mission that I received from God more than two years ago. The idea has been in the pipeline as we prayed and let God’s call come to fruition according to His time. Until last Sunday, we were attending the AFM church services as usual. We had notified our leaders about our intention and we were doing the groundwork at home during mid-week services. We thank God that we have finally fulfilled his call. We are starting as a small ministry and we believe the church will grow with time.</blockquote>

Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe (AFM) Vice President Cossum Chiangwa has said that they passed a vote of no confidence in AFM President Aspher Madziyire because he wanted to impose a “cultic constitution.” Chiangwa also highlighted a number of issues with the draft constitution alleging that Madziyire wanted to change the Church’s constitution in order to leave his secretary Reverend Madawo in charge. In an interview with The Standard, Chiangwa said,
<blockquote>I have never rebelled against anyone in the church and I will never do that for anything. All that I have stood up against is the unprocedural rewriting of our church’s constitution, which risks secularising the church. Protecting the legacy of the church is not rebellion at all….the draft constitution is cultic. I have stood with more than 80% of the AFM pastors, elders, deacons and congregants to say no to the cultic constitution. Even the mother body, AFM International (AFMI), persuaded them not to impose the constitution on the church. So all those people (pastors, councillors and AFMI] cannot be called rebels. Rebels are those that are trying to change the constitution to suit their own selfish needs…the whole problem only revolves around the attempt by Reverend Madziyire and his team to smuggle a constitution that meets their selfish needs. They have ignored the constitutional way of amending our own constitution.
…The new constitution has a lot of doctrinal discrepancies, which make it totally incompatible with the AFM in Zimbabwe Church or any other member of the AFM International. It has changed the confession of our faith. It elevates prophecy to the level of God’s Word. It requires us to baptise pamapopoma (at waterfalls). It makes someone a member of the church by birth, not by repentance. I have just mentioned a few.
…The new constitution is awash with very secular concepts. One of them is the emphasis on the income an assembly can have in order to qualify to be an assembly. It has to be known that AFM has grown through leaps and bounds, not because of focus on money, but focus on souls. The Great Commission has been our call to duty, not money. The new constitution seeks to dissolve all assemblies which do not meet a certain income level regardless of the number of souls who are at the assembly. All pastors at such assemblies would be transferred to a provincial pool where they can only be assigned to evangelism duties when need arises. Pastors have interpreted that as constructive dismissal yet they have God’s call to acquit. The second secular concept is the introduction of the AFM in Zimbabwe Judiciary Authority, which will have a lower and appellate court manned by full-time judges. There is nowhere in church history where such a structure has been found in the sacred domains.
The third secular concept is the Consolidated Revenue Fund. It has to be noted that for the past 16 years AFM in Zimbabwe finances have never been audited and the leadership has blatantly refused to have the books audited. Their refusal comes against a lot of speculation that there is gross financial misappropriation. It is for that reason that congregations are resisting the move to pool resources together until financial accountability is guaranteed. So far, it is only the forensic audit which can prove that AFM has a good financial management system. Without it, no one will buy-in to the idea of centralisation of funds.</blockquote>

Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe’s  (AFM) leadership has suspended top church leaders as the power struggle in the church intensifies.
The battle to control one of Zimbabwe’s biggest churches rages on, threatening to further split the group.
The church’s general secretary Reverend Amos Madawu communicated that seven top church leaders have since been suspended for violating the church constitution.
The church’s president, Reverend Aspher Madziyire on Wednesday suspended vice-president Reverend Cossum Chiangwa and his allies without salary and benefits.

AFM Top Brass Suspended

Underfire Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe (AFM) president Dr Aspher Madziyire who had a vote of no confidence passed against him, has fought back by suspending AFM deputy president Rev. Cossum Chiangwa and other pastors with no salary or benefits. However, speaking to The Standard, Chiangwa dismissed the suspension as being null and void. Said Chiangwa,
<blockquote>It is that National Workers Council, which is the highest body in the church, which had 1 562 delegates who passed a unanimous vote of no-confidence on Dr Madziyire and others. The suspension, therefore, is a nullity because a leader of an organisation cannot suspend another from a different organisation.
The differences in the church led to those who felt that they were the majority whose rights had been violated by the administration of Dr Madziyire to convene a National Workers Council on September 22 according to the constitution of the AFM and review the situation in the church…</blockquote>

AFM President Suspends "Rebels" , Vice President Says Suspension Is Null And Void

Pastors of the troubled church, the Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe (AFM) led by AFM deputy president Rev. Cossum Chiangwa passed a vote of no confidence in AFM president Dr Aspher Madziyire, church elder and prominent lawyer Tawanda Nyambirai, general secretary Reverend Amon Madawo, and national administrator Pastor Munyaradzi Shumba. The motion was passed at the church’s national workers council held on Saturday at Rufaro Conference Centre in Masvingo. The church will now be run by elders until elections are held in October. Announcing the change in leadership, AFM wrote on its social media page,

The AFM national Council part of its Councilors at the Photo and about 750 Assembly convened at Rufaro Conference centre in Masvingo today to elect its New leadership today. However, deposed President Aspher Madziyire is not taking this lying down and has vowed to approach the High Court to have the elections nullified. Madziyire is arguing that the meeting was illegal. Madziyire has also set dates for the presidential election which means that at the moment there are two AFMs, one following Rev. Chiangwa and another following Madziyire. Speaking to H-Metro, Madawo said,
<blockquote>The national elections shall be held on November 3, 2018. We would also want to make an announcement to all our AFM members that they should be careful and desist from relying on messages that are going viral on social media about our church. We don’t run the church or make decisions and resolutions on social media.</blockquote>

Pastor Lovejoy Chabata the principal of the Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) in Zimbabwe’s Living Waters Theological Seminary has been accused of molesting his professional assistant, Ms Victoria Phiri. In a letter titled ‘Complaint of sexual harassment,’ Ms Phiri said,
<blockquote>
It was on a Friday 10 August 2018 at 16.45pm when the principal Pastor Lovejoy Chabata called me to his office to file documents which were lying on his table. I went to his office and started to do the filing in his presence and he asked me to change one of the files and replace it with a book which was on his table…He asked me to put the book on top of his filing cabinet. As I finished placing the book there, he had moved from his chair and he was standing tightly hugging me and l had to push him away. He continued holding my right hand, rubbing it inside my palm and I quickly left his office…</blockquote>
Pastor Chabata refused to comment on the matter and referred all questions to the AFM secretary general, Reverend Amon Madawu. Said Chabata,

AFM's Theological College Principal Accused Of Sexual Harassment

Pastor Toni Kandiye of the Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe (AFM) Tshabalala Assembly is reported to have fled from his home. The pastor disappeared after allegedly impregnating the maid and one of his wife’s relatives. The maid has since been fired.  Pastor Kandiye’s wife, Modester refused to comment on the matter. However, the daughter Grace told the Chronicle,

The overseer of the church, Mr Clever Mupakaidzwa, said

AFM Pastor Flees From Home After Impregnating Maid, Wife's Relative

AFM Pastor Kefias Mujokeri, who is stationed at Shalom Revival Centre in Kadoma, has filed an urgent High Court chamber application seeking to compel the church’s president Pastor Aspher Madziyire to urgently proclaim the election date for the provincial and apostolic council. 
Through his lawyer Mr Joshua Chirambwe of Lawman Chimuriwo Law Chambers, Mujokeri argues AFM is operating without legitimate leadership and that the election is required as a matter of urgency. He argues the current executive led by Madziyire has been operating illegally since April 28 2018. The matter is yet to be set down for hearing at the High Court.

AFM Pastor Drags Church President To Court Over Elections

Following<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/03/18/split-afm-church-looms/" rel="noopener" target="_blank"> leadership squabbles</a>, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/02/25/afm-president-sued-refusing-audit-churches-financial-records-15-years/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">High Court lawsuits</a> and calls for the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/03/30/afm-pastors-demand-constitutional-reforms-want-all-pastors-to-earn-the-same/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">church’s constitution to be reformed</a>, the elders of the Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) in Zimbabwe, have released the following statement.
<blockquote>Following the unfortunate squabbles, mudslinging and disharmony going on in the church due to the Apostolic Council and Workers Council initiated constitution reforms, the Apostolic Council wishes to make the following statement:
That as Apostolic Council we thank the Lord for the blessings the Church has experienced over the last 103 years of its existence and ministry in Zimbabwe. The Church in this period grew in leaps and bounds spiritually, numerically, and spread all over the country and beyond its borders and overseas.
That the problems the church is currently facing are occasioned by this phenomenal growth and blessings. That while the leadership and pastors were busy with the spiritual aspects of the ministry, the administration and management of the Church, including the Church Constitution was overtaken by the growth of the Church such that the systems, the structures and the Constitution could not sustain the magnitude of the growth.
As a result, there has been an increase of cases of some of the members of the Church who are taking the Church to the courts of the land instead of resolving the matters within the Church.
That what is more disturbing is the unfortunate culture of taking church matters to the media and reacting negatively to Church matters and to leadership in a manner that damages the reputation of the Church. It is for this reason that the Workers Council started a process of putting into place systems, structures and relevant processes through the ongoing Constitution Reform Process, to fix the administrative and management issues affecting the Church, especially its Constitution.
The Apostolic Council wants to assure all the members of AFM In Zimbabwe that the Council is committed to doing everything possible with the help of the Lord to unite the Church as it goes through the Reform processes and elections so that the church can focus on its mission and calling, also the views of all stakeholders will be included.
The Apostolic Council confesses that many mistakes were made in the past and along this journey of reforming the church and, that for many years the Church did not pay attention to the constitutionality of decisions it made and actions that were taken.
The Apostolic Council wants to assure the members of the church that the Council will do everything possible within its powers and based on sound legal advice to ensure that whatever is done from now on is in terms of the Constitution and Regulations of the Church.
We call on all members of the AFM and all its pastors and leaders to cease henceforth any divisive and factional activities and focus prayerfully on ensuring stability for the Church as it goes through the reform process and as it undertakes to hold credible elections in May 2018 as prescribed.
We would like you to know that the International President of AFM Internationally has committed himself to accompany us through this process, including attending our Workers Council as scheduled.
The International President has pledged in the name of the Lord and as led by the Holy Spirit, to make sure that by 28th April 2018 no member of the Church or pastor is lost because of this reform process.
We call all members of the AFM in Zimbabwe to engage in intense prayers and fasting between now and the end of May 2018 as we go past this challenging corridor of reforms and elections. We also appeal to our sister-churches internationally and the rest of the Body of Christ to intercede for us and to join us through prayer that God should help us to cross this bridge and restore the credibility of the church and its mission in our country and globally.</blockquote>

AFM Calls On Pastors To Stop Factional Activities, Admits Disregarding Constitution In The Past

Some Pastors of the troubled church, the Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe (AFM), have demanded that the church’s constitution should be changed to ensure that resources are shared equitably. The proponents of constitutional reform want all pastors to earn the same noting that some pastors in lucrative urban areas where earning enough to buy houses and cars while their counterparts in rural areas where struggling to make ends meet. <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/03/18/split-afm-church-looms/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">The church is already facing a potential split after some pastors demanded the resignation of church president Dr Aspher Madziyire</a>, church elder and prominent lawyer Tawanda Nyambirai, general secretary Reverend Amon Madawo, and administrator Pastor Munyaradzi Shumba.
Part of the document calling for constitutional reforms reads,
<blockquote>This paper sets out to enunciate the reasons why we believe our church AFM in Zimbabwe has lost compass and has been overtaken by individuals whose motives and objectives are self-serving.
It is a clarion call to the Elders of this great Pentecostal movement to take their rightful place and bring the Church back on course. For too long the Elders of this church have been quiet while watching God-fearing saints being coerced and manipulated out of their wealth, by scheming preachers with sweet tongues.
…the current decentralised financial system obtaining in the AFM today, requires that Assemblies remit only 20% of their tithes to the Province (other income streams excluded) and whatever levy that might be charged by the Province or National while retaining the rest implying that Assemblies are retaining more than 70% of the tithe income generated at an assembly plus other incomes as well. This means that those assemblies that generate much also get to retain much, thus the high-income assemblies will have high retention levels. By definition, the disadvantaged or low-income areas will remain as such while the affluent will continue to blossom.
It is important to see how the financial system envisaged the use of the &gt;70%. In the current constitution, the pastor’s remuneration is meant to come from within this. This means for a low-income urban assembly generating $500-00 per month in tithes, the pastor’s remuneration and local expenses will be limited to around $350-00 per month while high-income urban assembly generating $5,000-00 and there are many such, the pastor’s remuneration and local expenses will be within the $3,500-00 per month. THIS SYSTEM CLEARLY CREATES CLASSES WITHIN OUR PASTORATE.
The remuneration of our pastors has been the source of much anguish to many of our rural assembly pastors. The rural assembly pastor has to live with a promise and hope that one day he will migrate to an urban assembly but this is equivalent to playing the lottery and is a function of the pastor’s relationship with the Overseer, giving serious overtones to corruption and nepotism.
Our financial system has thus created Pastors who are able to send their kids to school in private schools while others can’t even afford the local government or council school in the neighbourhood. Many of these pastors’ kids are only going to school courtesy of well-wishers like Capernaum Trust, otherwise, they were not going to go to school at all.
Such disparities in income have created classes within our pastorate with the rural assembly pastors being viewed as second class citizens to their elite urban counterparts much like Lazarus and the King.</blockquote>
