The Bulawayo City Council (BCC) has decommissioned one of its major cemeteries, Athlone West Cemetery, Town Clerk Christopher Dube has said.
The local authority has since commissioned a new burial place, Umvutcha Cemetery with a carrying capacity of 45 000 graves.
In a statement on Friday, Dube revealed that Athlone West Cemetery has been closed after it ran out of burial space. Said, Dube:

The City of Bulawayo would like to inform the public and valuable stakeholders that the burial space at Athlone West Cemetery has been exhausted.
In view of the aforementioned, the cemetery will be decommissioned with effect from Friday 7 January 2022 with the subsequent commissioning of Umvutcha Cemetery.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Bulawayo Corporate Communications manager Nesisa Mpofu said the cemetery would remain open for second interments and burials in reserved graves. She said:

There will be no more regular burials conducted at Athlone West Cemetery. However, the cemetery will remain open for second interments and burials in reserved graves.
Burials at Athlone West Cemetery started in 2018. Projected graves were 8 000, which at current burials were within the projected four years.
The projected number of graves at Umvutcha is 45 000 and these should be laid approximately 10 years barring any unforeseen circumstances like bedrock which has been a challenge at Athlone West.

Bulawayo is running out of burial space and the City Fathers have previously urged residents to embrace cremation and grave sharing among family members as part of ways to conserve burial space.

Bulawayo Decommissions Athlone West Cemetery

The Bulawayo City Council (BCC) has suspended burials at Athlone cemetery after the excavator used digging graves broke down, sources have said.
Athlone cemetery is situated just after Northend Suburb in the east of Bulawayo, from the city centre.
Sources within the city council told Cite that due to the malfunction of the machine, burials would be conducted at Luveve cemetery.
Apparently, the excavator broke down as a result of numerous Covid-19 related burials that overwhelmed the city’s two cemeteries. Said a source:

Since Thursday, the city council has not been burying at Athlone cemetery because the grave digging machine has broken down.
All burials are now being conducted at Luveve cemetery.
</blockquote>
Bulawayo Mayor, Councillor Solomon Mguni told CITE on Sunday that he had not been briefed about the matter adding that he will look into the matter.
Some bereaved families who had already booked burial space at Athlone cemetery bemoaned this development and said they felt short-changed by the local authority as a grave at Luveve is cheaper than at Athlone.
A grave booking at Athlone cost $US53 while space at Luveve cemetery is $US43. One source said:

We had booked graves at Athlone for relatives sometime before.
When we wanted to bury one of our relatives there, we were informed there were no ready graves because the grave digging machine broke down.  That is unfair and the council should have stand-by grave digging machines so as to avoid inconveniencing its clients.

BCC health services director Edwin Sibanda recently told the city fathers that Bulawayo’s cemeteries had recorded high numbers of burials of bodies repatriated from South Africa and Botswana.

Bulawayo City Council Suspends Burials At Athlone Cemetery

A family in Emakhandeni, Bulawayo, was forced to exhume the purported body of a family member following a mix-up involving the dead body of a suspected COVID-19 patient.
The mix-up was done at Exodus Funeral Parlour in the city.
Ntombiyolwandle Magagula, nee Phiri (74), died on Sunday night after a long illness and burial was expected at Luveve Cemetery.
The other body involved in the mix-up was that of Annah Ndlovu (77) who is said to have succumbed to COVID-19.
The matter came to light when the Magagula family went to claim their body for burial only to discover it had been collected by the Ndlovus and buried at Athlone Cemetery on Tuesday.
Magagula’s body was exhumed on Wednesday.
Speaking to CITE, Magagula family representative Christopher Dube said the family had a funeral policy with Kingdom Blue Funeral Services.
But when they went to Luveve Police Station to notify the police of Magagula’s death, the police reportedly contacted Exodus to collect the body. Said Dube:

We have a policy with Kingdom Blue, when Ntombiyolwandle (Magagula) died her children went to Luveve police station to report, the police said they did not have contacts for Kingdom Blue Funeral Parlour and they contacted Exodus to collect the body.
</blockquote>
Janet Magagula said when they went to collect the deceased’s remains the following day at Exodus, they were charged US$280.
Magagula added that they could not lay the blame on Kingdom Blue as they were not involved in handling the bodies.
The exhumation process took place at Athlone cemetery after all other funeral services which were scheduled for the day at the graveyard were over.
After the exhumation process, the body was taken back to Kingdom Blue where the family positively identified Magagula.
Meanwhile, the Ndlovu family representative Sibongile Ndlovu said their relative had died of COVID-19 and due to regulations, could not conduct body viewing.
Kingdom Blue marketing manager, Andrea Shumba apologised for the body mix-up.
