The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Monday said it has devised a less technical, and more easily pronounceable, system for naming COVID-19 variants of the novel coronavirus known as SARS-CoV-2.
Scientists said the letters-and-numbers system was so complicated that many people were referring to variants by the places they were discovered, for example, B.1.617.2, which people referred to as the Indian variant because it was first detected in the Asian country.
Variants will be assigned letters of the Greek alphabet in the order in which they are designated potential threats by WHO.
B.1.617.2 has been named Delta under the new system and the variant discovered in Britain (B.1.1.7), which has contributed to devastating waves of cases globally has been renamed Alpha.
Scientists worry that those informal nicknames, such as Indian Variant, South African variant, can be both inaccurate and stigmatising, punishing countries for investing in the genome sequencing necessary to sound an alarm about new mutations that may well have emerged somewhere else.

Coronavirus: Indian Variant Renamed 'Delta' As WHO Adopts New System

The deadly coronavirus Indian variant, B.1.617, which was detected in Kwekwe is now under control with no new cases recorded since confirmation of the first case last week, an official has said.
An expert in the Ministry of Health and Child Care who is part of the advisory team that advises the Government on COVID-19, Dr Raiva Simbi said there is no need to panic as the spread of the new strain has been contained. He said:
<blockquote>There is no need to panic, people should adhere to the prescribed Covid-19 protocols and we will win this war.
Like what the Vice President (Dr Constantino Chiwenga) said, we now have the capacity for genomic sequencing that is to detect which particular variants are in circulation in the country.
The B.1.617 variant widely known as the Indian variant is under control in Zimbabwe, we are still carrying out some samples but available results show that we have managed to control the spread.</blockquote>
Dr Simbi said measures put in place by the Government, such as a localised lockdown for Kwekwe district as well as isolation of suspected cases, helped to control the spread of the virus. He added:
<blockquote>Like I said the evidence we have is that the situation is under control because we do not have any new cases, the positivity rate has not increased.
The fear was that the variant will spread in the country, but the quick response by the Government to restrict movements in the area the virus was detected has helped in controlling the geographical spread of the virus.
But our advice remains that people should continue adhering to the prescribed protocols to avoid a spike in infections.</blockquote>
Dr Simbi also urged citizens who have not yet been vaccinated to be inoculated and boost their chances of beating the virus if infected.

'Zimbabwe Contains Coronavirus Indian Variant'

Ninety-four (94) students at Bondolfi Teachers’ College in Masvingo tested positive for COVID-19 in the past two days, health authorities have confirmed.
In its daily coronavirus/COVID-19 update or situation report for 26 May 2021, the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) said 113 new cases had been recorded countrywide. The report read:
<blockquote>The 94 cases reported today from Masvingo include 16 that tested positive yesterday and 78 that tested positive today, all from a localized outbreak at an education institution in Masvingo district.</blockquote>
Social media figures were, however, higher than those released by the ministry of health.
Earlier reports had indicated that the entire student population of over 303 was put under quarantine following the unprecedented positive tests.
Masvingo COVID-19 taskforce provincial spokesperson Rodgers Irimai says authorities are currently scrambling to assess the situation and its ramifications on the war against the pandemic.
He cautioned that the situation was under control with all the 303 on-boarding students under mandatory quarantine for two weeks.
The government recently put Kwekwe District in the Midlands Province under lockdown after cases of the B.1.617 coronavirus variant or Indian variant were detected in Kwekwe City early this month.

Former Health Minister Henry Madzorera (MDC) has described the government decreed localised lockdown in Kwekwe as nothing but an assault on the church.
Madzorera who is the MDC Alliance secretary for health told NewZimbabwe.com in an interview that the lockdown in its current format was unnecessary as Kwekwe remained a hive of activity except for churches that have complied with the directive. Said Madzorera:
<blockquote>After reviewing the terms of the lockdown critically yesterday, I felt that the lockdown was actually not going to achieve anything.
It’s unnecessary in its current format. Essentially, only the formal churches have been locked down.
For markets, shops travelling and other businesses, its business as usual. So, this lockdown is just an assault on the churches.
We do not seem to have compelling data for a lockdown in Kwekwe at the moment, with only 12 reported positive cases since the outbreak started on 9 May 2021, the last of which was on 14 May 2021.
If the government had wanted to do a pre-emptive strike on this potentially disastrous outbreak, I think it should have been done on 9 May 2021 when the first cases tested positive, with the full knowledge that they had received a family member from India.</blockquote>
On Friday last week Vice President Constantino Chiwenga who doubles as a Health Minister imposed a 14-day lockdown on Kwekwe, following reports that the B.1.617 coronavirus variant, had been detected in the city.
Kwekwe residents’ chairperson Robson Kadenhe, who died recently, is believed to have succumbed to the COVID-19 variant he is suspected to have contracted from his niece who had just returned from India.

Kwekwe Lockdown An Assault On Formal Churches - Ex-Health Minister

The government has dismissed reports claiming that Kwekwe City has been placed under lockdown to curb the spread of the Indian coronavirus (B.1.617) variant in the city.
A 15-point letter emerged last night suggesting that the government had ordered the closure of shops and bars including prohibiting the movement of people.
Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister, Larry Mavima who is also the provincial COVID-19 taskforce chair, said the circulating report was fake.
Kwekwe Mayor, Councillor Angeline Kasipo said she has been inundated with calls from members of the public asking about the “lockdown” announcement.
Below is the letter purported to have originated from the office of the Health and Childcare Ministry:
<blockquote>KWEKWE DISTRICT COVID-19 SITUATION AND WAY FORWARD.
Kwekwe District is experiencing focused COVID-19 outbreak. The Minister of Health and Child Care issued a statement informing the nation that we now have a new variant for COVID-19 here in Zimbabwe, THE INDIAN VARIANT B.1.617. is now here in Kwekwe.
Efforts by the joint meeting of the Kwekwe District COVID-19 Taskforce and The District Rapid Response Team with advice from MOHCC head office, have resolved to effect the following measures with effect from tomorrow 21/05/2021.
<ol>
<li>The District has to go into lockdown for 3 weeks with effective curfew running from 7 pm to 6 am for a total period of 3 weeks.</li>
<li>No visitors to all boarding schools and all day schools to observe strict COVID-19 school protocols.</li>
<li>Opening business hours to run from 8 am to 5 pm.</li>
<li>Close all bars, drinking places beer halls and bottle stores.</li>
<li>All gatherings (weddings, church services and all other public and private groupings) are banned.</li>
<li>ALL FUNERALS must be supervised by health workers and should not gather more than 30 people.</li>
<li>Risk communication activities must be upped since we need our communities to be aware of what is going on if at all they are comply with COVID19 regulations. Community health workers are to come on board as well.</li>
<li>ZUPCO buses to be engaged so that they avoid bus overloading but must maintain social distancing all the time. The Taskforce chair to ensure this point is effected</li>
<li>Scale down all peoples’ markets operations and ensure adherence to COVID-19 regulations religiously. Social distancing, handwashing, and sanitization to be prioritised.</li>
<li>Starting from tomorrow the 21 of May 2021, all contacts will be tested for COVID-19 i.e. whether they display any signs and symptoms or not.</li>
<li>On discharge of all those who will have tested positive to the COVID-19 virus and have completed 10 days, they will be mandated to be tested again with PCR before they are finally discharged.</li>
<li>All health workers (EHTS. Nurses, Lab Staff, and where applicable Community Based Health Workers) who are involved in contact tracing, active case finding, treatment, Lab Tests and risk communication must be tested for COVID-19.</li>
<li>Kwekwe General Hospital to avail manpower (Doctors and Nurses) to help with sample collection.</li>
<li>The district is activating all its quarantine isolation and treatment centres with immediate effect and these include Bell Medical Centre in Redcliff, Kwekwe General Hospital and Kwekwe City Isolation Disease Hospital (IDH)</li>
<li>Adjustments to the above list shall be subject to review as and when its necessary to do so in order to achieve the desired goals and objectives.</li>
<li>ZRP to take charge in effecting the above points of action</li>

UPDATED: Govt Dismisses 3-week Kwekwe Lockdown Reports

Health experts have urged members of the public to observe the available COVID-19 protocols in the wake of the new Indian coronavirus variant.
The government on Wednesday confirmed detecting cases of a new Coronavirus variant that emerged in India, known as B.1.617.
The first case of the variant was detected on Tuesday in Kwekwe, a city in the country’s Midlands province.
Zimbabwe is enforcing mandatory quarantine for all travellers from India.
Public health experts who spoke to ZTN said Zimbabweans should observe the available COVID-19 protocols to avoid a rise in infections, in the wake of this new variant.
Community Working Group on Health (CWGH) executive director Itai Rusike said:
<blockquote>The people of Zimbabwe should remain vigilant; it is also equally important that the authorities enforce the regulations.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe Medical Association President Dr Francis Chirowa said:
<blockquote>As soon as you identify someone who is infected they need to be isolated.</blockquote>
The B.1.617 variant is one of the factors driving the current crisis in India and neighbouring Nepal.
The variant is believed more contagious than the original SARS-CoV-2 virus, but there’s no clear evidence that it causes more severe disease or more deaths.

Health Experts Speak On Indian Coronavirus Variant

The Minister of Health and Child Care, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga has announced that the B.1.617 coronavirus variant, predominantly from India, is now in Zimbabwe.
In a statement on Wednesday, Chiwenga said that a genomic sequencing test was carried out on samples collected from a reported focalized outbreak in Kwekwe which was linked to a traveller from India on the 29th of April 2021.
Chiwenga has therefore directed that with immediate effect, people travelling from or transiting from India will be subject to mandatory quarantine at a designated quarantine centre and at their own cost.
He added that travellers from India will also be subjected to a COVID-19 test on arrival despite the status of their travelling certificate.

<blockquote>STATEMENT BY HONOURABLE VICE PRESIDENT AND MINISTER OF HEALTH AND CHILD CARE OF THE REPUBLIC OF ZIMBABWE, GEN. (RETD) DR. C. G. D. N. CHIWENGA ‘GCZM’ ON COVID 19 CONTAINMENT IN RESPECT TO THE NEW VARIANT INTRODUCED INTO THE COUNTRY FROM HIGHT RISK AREAS
1. Genomic sequencing test was carried out on samples collected from a reported focalized outbreak in Kwekwe which was linked to a traveller from India on the 29th of April 2021, a high risk Covid 19 transmission area.
1.1. The test conducted revealed that
a. the B.1.617 variants predominantly from the Republic of India was detected at the focalized outbreak in Kwekwe 
b. The nation is therefore advised that this variant B.1. 617 is now in Zimbabwe.
2. The following travel advisory is therefore being Issued
a. People travelling from or transiting from India will be subject to mandatory quarantine at a designated quarantine centre and at their own cost.
b. These travellers will be subjected to a Covid 19 test on arrival despite the status of their travelling certificate.
3. Furthermore, the Ministry would like to advise that everyone must abide by the following Covid 19 regulations;
a. Maintain social distancing at all times 
b. Continue to use face masks at all times 
c. Continue with regular handwashing and use of hand sanitizers 
d. Desist from unnecessary travel outside own household 
e. Take the Covid 19 vaccine from the nearest health centre in your area which is providing the vaccine
4. Travellers coming into the country from other countries should present with a Covid 19 PCR test done not more thn 48 hours from the time of departure, failure of which this willa be done arrival on one s expense. Travellers will be quarantined for 10days from date of arrival.</blockquote>
