Government is considering the option of purchasing vehicles for ministers and parliamentarians from local vehicle assemblers to promote the domestic industry and reduce foreign currency expenditure in line with austerity measures.
Local vehicle assemblers say such a move will create thousands of jobs and revive the vehicle assembling sector. Quest Motors and Willowvale Motor Industries (WMI), which are country’s foremost vehicle assemblers say they have capacity to produce quality vehicles which match imported Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs). Quest Motors argue Government is obliged to implement a directive issued by the Office of the President and Cabinet that compels them to purchase vehicles from local assemblers.
Finance and Economic Development Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube said in an interview that Government was considering buying the next batch of ministerial vehicles from local assemblers after suspending vehicle imports for the current crop.

Govt Considers Purchasing Local Vehicle Assembly Cars For MPs And Ministers

Speaking at Chief Samuel Samambwa’s installation ceremony in Zhombe on Saturday, President of the Zimbabwe Council of Chiefs, Chief Fortune Charumbira said chiefs are unapologetic about the cars they received from President Emmerson Mnangagwa. 
Government recently handed over 52 vehicles to traditional leaders around the country with more to be delivered shortly. Charumbira said that they did not receive the vehicles for free but paid for them. Said Charumbira:
<blockquote>We are unapologetic about the cars we received from President Mnangagwa recently. Those vehicles are necessary for the status, dignity and respect of the traditional leaders. If anything, we deserve those cars more than anyone else in this country. Contrary to popular belief that we were given the cars for free, we actually bought them with our own money. People are just ignorant about this whole thing. The cars were purchased with the money we have been contributing towards the Chiefs’ Vehicle Scheme since 2004. We did not get them for free.
It’s you who designed the new Constitution, the same document which states that chiefs should be dignified and exemplary. Now we are given cars, you question why it is done. If a politician gets a car you do not question, but a chief, you start saying a lot of things. What is the difference? After all a politician only lasts for a short period of time, yet a chief is there for life.</blockquote>

"We Deserve Those Cars More Than Anyone Else": Charumbira Defends Receiving Cars From Mnangagwa

Speaker of Parliament Jacob Mudenda has been slammed for suggesting that the import duty for second-hand cars should be raised to 150 percent when the country is not building any vehicles. Motor Industry Association of Zimbabwe (MIAZ) president Luckson Gwara said:
<blockquote>I am not sure what way he (Mudenda) wants to go about it, whether it is in sync with what we crafted as the Motor Industry Development Policy, because I have not read his statements.
But, our view is that, while we attend to this, we still need to allow people to be able to drive vehicles.
Obviously, the vehicles they are importing are much cheaper than anywhere else and in any case, we are not building (sic) any vehicles, so it is more to do with controlling.</blockquote>

Motor Industry slams Mudenda over proposal to hike import duty of second-hand cars to 150 percent

Yesterday President <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Robert_Mugabe">Robert Mugabe</a> handed over 13 Ford Ranger vehicles to war veterans through their minister, <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Tshinga_Dube">Tshinga Dube</a>, at the <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_African_National_Union_-_Patriotic_Front">Zanu PF</a> headquarters in Harare before a politburo meeting. NewsDay reports that more than 400 top-of-the-range off-road vehicles worth more than $20 million are expected.
Sources interviewed by NewsDay revealed that the next delivery was for the youth and women’s leagues before provincial executive structures get vehicles. According to the sources, the youth league will get 20 vehicles, with 10 being distributed to provinces, while 10 will remain at the party’s headquarters in Harare.
The women’s league will also get 20 vehicles to be distributed along the same lines as the youth league’s. Each province would receive 20 twin cab trucks for the 2018 election campaign. However Youth league secretary for finance, Tongai Kasukuwere yesterday declined to shed light on the matter, referring all questions to Zanu PF secretary for transport, <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Oppah_Muchinguri">Oppah Muchinguri</a>.
