Telecommunications giant Econet Wireless Zimbabwe (EWZ), and its sister company Cassava Smartech Zimbabwe (Cassava), last week clinched top business leadership and merit awards at separate events held by three leading professional bodies – the Institute of Personnel Management of Zimbabwe (IPMZ), the Zimbabwe Institute of Management (ZIM) and the Institute of Public Relations and Communications Zimbabwe (IPRCZ).
EWZ Group Chief Executive Officer Dr Douglas Mboweni, whose organisation directly employs more than 2 000 people, was named the IPMZ’s Best CEO of the Year with a Human Resources Orientation, while Cassava CEO, Mr Eddie Chibi, was awarded ZIM’s prestigious Businessman of the Year award.
Cassava Smartech was spun off from Econet Wireless Zimbabwe and separately listed on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange in December 2018.
It has since grown to be one of the largest diversified companies listed on the local bourse, with interests in fintech, insurtech, agritech, health tech and on-demand platform-based services.

Econet, Cassava Bag Top Business Awards

EcoCash, Zimbabwe’s largest mobile money platform, is now reaping the rewards of its core system upgrade, with the platform now able to deliver automated and significantly enhanced customer experience to its customers.
Eddie Chibi, the Chief Executive Officer of Cassava Smartech Zimbabwe, the holding company of EcoCash, said the group was focused on enhancing customer experience by leveraging digital innovations to deliver convenient, automated customer solutions. Said Chibi:

He said for the customers’ convenience, EcoCash was working closely with its partners Powertel and Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) to educate customers on the purchase of the ‘lifeline’ ZESA tokens, in particular, to dispel the misconception that electricity tokens are only cheaper at the beginning of a calendar month.
(The lifeline tariff is the price of the first 50 units of power that is charged at a base tariff of ZW$1.67 per unit, compared to ZW$3.65 for the next 51-200 units, ZW$9.92 for the next 201-300 units, and ZW$15.57 for over 301 units in a particular month.)
Jojo noted that over 70% of traffic to all EcoCash customer touch-points (shops) was attributed to two human self-induced errors: PIN resets and peer-to-peer transaction reversals, owing to customers mistakenly sending money to the wrong person. Jojo added:
<blockquote>To help address that, we have now launched the EcoCash Web Portal, as well as a USSD solution, which empowers customers to reset their own PIN numbers and to similarly initiate funds reversals. The Web and USSD initiatives are very safe and easy to use.
We are really excited about these self-care initiatives as we can already see the convenience they have begun to offer our customers, in a secure environment.</blockquote>

EcoCash Reaps Benefits Of System Upgrade As It Automates Key Customer Support Services

Cassava Smartech Zimbabwe (Cassava) has extended its ‘My Ecocash Rewards’ promotion to the diaspora community as a way of bringing smiles to local customers during this festive season.
The promotion, launched at the beginning of last month, rewards EcoCash customers who transact on the platform by awarding them points which are redeemable for actual monetary value, airtime or data at the end of every month.
To date, a million EcoCash customers have already redeemed their points and enjoyed their benefits in the hugely popular promotion, which is running until the end of February 2021.
Givemore Jojo, Cassava Smartech’s Chief Commercial Officer, said his company’s strategic partnership with Cassava Remit UK and EcoCash Remit SA will see customers, who receive funds from the diaspora through these International Money Transfer Operators, enjoying extra rewards through the promotion. This is in addition to the points they earn from transacting. Jojo said:

Statistics from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe show that the country recorded a 33 per cent increase in diaspora remittances to US$466,2 million as at July 31, 2020, up from US$349,7 million recorded at the same time last year.
Diaspora remittances have proved to be critical to the economy as the country battles to attract significant foreign direct investment.
Jojo said the partnership between Ecocash and Cassava Remit and Ecocash Remit will see increased diaspora remittances in the long term. He said:

Cassava Extends ‘My Ecocash Rewards’ To Diaspora Remittances

Cassava Fintech International (CFI) has extended its #African&amp;Talented promotion to November 29, 2020, due to public demand.
The talent show promotion, which seeks to identify and support talent across the continent, was initially launched in September on the Sasai App.
But, according to the company, it has been hugely popular leading to the decision to extend the period of the promotion. Sasai Chief Operating Officer Tapera Mushoriwa said:

Sasai Talent Promotion Extended Due To Public Demand

Law expert, Advocate Fadzayi Mahere has described the move by the state to search Econet and Cassava offices and seize full subscribers’ details as a “far-reaching breach of privacy.”
Mahere who is also the spokesperson of the opposition MDC Alliance speaks after police, equipped with a search and seizure warrant issued by a Magistrate, on Friday besieged Money Laundering-accused Econet Wireless and Cassava’s main offices in Harare.
Posting on Twitter, Mahere said:
<blockquote>“Full subscriber details” of each user means they have your name, cellphone number, address and all EcoCash records for the relevant period. This is a far-reaching breach of privacy. Imagine what <a data-user-name="PoliceZimbabwe" href="https://twitter.com/PoliceZimbabwe/" rel="noopener user noreferrer" target="_blank">@PoliceZimbabwe</a> can do in this authoritarian environment with such extensive data.</blockquote>
The development comes after the government recently suspended all mobile money operators – Econet’s Ecocash, NetOne’s OneMoney and Telecel’s Telecash, together with the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange on the basis that they were fuelling illegal forex dealing.
This came as the local currency continued to lose value at a paraffin speed on the parallel market, to the displeasure of the state that wanted to convince the public that the reintroduction of the Zimbabwe dollar was the best move to curb inflation and kickstart economic growth.

Econet has been accused of money laundering by the State in the search and seizure warrant below. The State has demanded all the names of customers who subscribed with the network operator since January the 2nd 2020 to the 30th of June 2020.
The State demanded all financial transaction records.
The search warrant which the police were carrying was issued by a Magistrate granting them permission to search the telecommunications giant&#8217;s premises and retrieve the data in question.

On 9 July 2020, information was received to the effect that during the period extending from 01 January 2020 to 30 June 2020, ECONET WIRELESS (Pvt) Ltd and its subsidiaries have been fraudulently creating and issuing non-attributable and non-auditable individual subscribers merchants briers and agent which they credited with huge sums of money and distributed to their runners through their trust accounts. The runners would in turn buy foreign currency from the black before being externalized. 
4. It is against this background that it is suspected that the accused is laundering the proceeds of crime.

Police Executing A Search & Seizure Warrant At Econet's And Cassava's Main Offices 

<blockquote>The Econet group has imported 100 000 COVID-19 test kits for use in testing critical target groups such as essential services staff and the elderly and vulnerable, as Zimbabwe enters its seventh week under a national lockdown imposed by the government in efforts to curb the spread of the deadly Coronavirus.
Announcing the development, the group’s Cassava Smartech Zimbabwe CEO Mr Eddie Chibi – whose health business unit, Maisha (which houses MARS Ambulance Services, Maisha Health Fund and Maisha Medik) has been investing in testing solutions – said the group’s commercial entities had partnered with Higherlife Foundation to bring in the much-needed test kits. He said the testing will be conducted by Maisha Testing, a business unit under Maisha.
“We are pleased to announce that we have imported 100 000 COVID-19 test kits to be used for testing our own staff, individuals and corporates across Zimbabwe,” he said. The corporates will pay a fee for the testing of their staff, which can be done on-site or off-site, said Mr Chibi.
To accelerate the testing process, Mr Chibi said Maisha had developed a franchise model, through which service providers approved by the Ministry of Health and Child Care will be issued with testing kits and personal protective equipment (PPE) for free, for them to conduct testing – subject to them fulfilling certain conditions, such as training and information management.
He added that the Group would also be offering FREE testing to certain marginalised communities around the country through its partnership with Higherlife Foundation.
Speaking about the distribution plan of the imported test kits to disadvantaged communities, Higherlife Foundation CEO Dr Kennedy Mubaiwa said the Foundation would be rolling out FREE testing to vulnerable citizens.
“We will be targeting vulnerable groups both in urban high-density and rural locations, as well as to beneficiaries already supported by our Foundation, which includes those in retirement and children’s homes, as well as pregnant women’s shelters,” said Dr Mubaiwa, adding that specific “high-risk groups”, such as the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions, would also be targeted. Mobile testing centres will be set-up in these communities for the citizen’s convenience.
Commenting on the importation of the test kits, Cassava Healthtech Chief Operating Officer, Mr Denver Phiri said investing in testing solutions in order to be able to test, isolate, treat and trace contacts to curb the spread of COVID-19 was a key recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO).
He said the group’s countrywide testing plan would be achieved through Maisha’s emergency services operational arm MARS, which has 10 bases across the country and 30 critical care ambulances.

Recently launched Econet app, <a href="https://www.techzim.co.zw/2019/07/cassava-econet-launching-sasai-a-chat-and-payments-app-seeking-to-challenge-whatsapp-dominance-in-africa/">Sasai</a>, now has a money remmitances service. The service is offered by the parent company Cassava SmartTech via the app. Users of the app will be charged 2.5% transfer fees.
However, for the first 30 days, the company is not charging anything for transfers in a bid to promote usage.
