Some traditional leaders have called for the resignation of Obert Gutu from the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC) following his remarks about Gukurahundi early this week.
The former MDC-T vice president claimed that the Gukurahundi massacres were a “tiny fraction” of past atrocities that have been experienced in the country.

20 000 people from Matabeleland and Midlands regions were massacred by a crack army unit deployed to the region by then Prime Minister Robert Mugabe to flush out perceived PF ZAPU dissidents in the 1980s.
On Friday, chiefs in Matabeleland joined human rights groups in condemning Gutu, describing his statements as retrogressive and malicious to the founding principles of the NPRC. Chief Mathema of Gwanda told NewsDay:
<blockquote>He (Gutu) lacks the calibre required for this emotive genocide. He is not a serious person and he lacks depth in approaching the Gukurahundi issue.
He should better excuse himself from this important commission that people hope will solve most of their problems that relate to Gukurahundi. He lacks insight into human nature.</blockquote>
Chief Jahana of Insiza said Gutu was clueless when it came to dealing with matters of conflict and could worsen the situation. He said:
<blockquote>He (Gutu) has no focus as a person coming from the region that never lost any relative in such genocide.</blockquote>
Ibhetshu LikaZulu secretary-general Mbuso Fuzwayo said Gutu’s remarks exposed the NPRC as a tool used by Government, the chief perpetrator, in buying time.

Mthwakazi Republic Party (MRP) leader Mqondisi Moyo threatened to block Gutu from attending any of the commission’s future meetings in Matabeleland.

Matabeleland Chiefs Want Gutu Out Of NPRC

A traditional leader has taken President Emmerson Mnangagwa to task over the “dubious” issuing of an Exclusive Prospecting Order (EPO) to mining giant Premier African Minerals in his area without following due process.
Chief Jahana of Insiza wrote a letter to Mnangagwa objecting to the mining exploration of lithium in Fort Rixon, saying the project will not benefit Matabeleland locals.
He argued that the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development did not even consult him and he only got to know about the venture from state media. The letter dated 14 May read:
<blockquote>In your November 24, 2017 acceptance speech as President of the Second Republic, you condemned the mortgaging of Zimbabweans future through the dubious issuance of mining EPOs, national strategic business permits licenses to foreigners, 99-year farm leases to foreigners without following due diligence and processes, which includes the grassroots consultation background check of beneficiaries and national security vetting.
It’s exactly 42 months later after you promised not to mortgage the future of Zimbabweans but the situation in my area proves you otherwise.
Mining EPOs are issued by your offices after you have consented hence this letter to you.
Take note that the due process of issuing a Lithium exploration EPO at Fort Rixon, in our area of jurisdiction with Chief Sibasa was not followed.
As chiefs, custodians of this area we only read about this mining venture from state media.</blockquote>
The chief accused Mnangagwa of mortgaging the future of his people without their consent. He said:
<blockquote>As chiefs, we feel the future of our subjects and Matabeleland at large has been mortgaged without our and their consent, knowledge and with them not benefitting since the company involved has its labour force from outside Insiza District and Matabeleland.</blockquote>
The chief also raised the issue of the late Filabusi Chief Vezi Maduna who engaged the president’s office about the same concern and was reportedly harassed by suspected state agents. He said:
<blockquote>Despite all the shortfalls by your office I mentioned in this letter I remain committed to saving my country in my best capabilities and respecting the Office of the President and Cabinet of Zimbabwe.
When the late Chief Maduna raised his concern and reservations on the issuance of mining EPOs across Matabeleland to your office, he was trailed by a number of unregistered vehicles and intimidate by unknown individuals thus the response he got from his letter to you until he died, I pray that with contents of this letter I won’t face the same fate as Chief Maduna.</blockquote>
Chief Jahana urged President Mnangagwa to revert to the normal processes of issuing all mining EPOs in Matabeleland.
The letter was also copied to the Commander of the ZDF, General Phillip Valerio Sibanda and Matabeleland South Provincial Chiefs Council.

Chief Jahana Confronts Mnangagwa

A Zanu PF Official from Shangani is reportedly selling state land to unsuspecting land seekers bypassing laws set by local traditional leaders, The Standard reports.
This was revealed in a petition letter from Mthwakazi Republic Party president Mqondisi Moyo to the government which urged the government to ”rescue Chief Jahana’s subjects from the captivity of Shame Mathe and Zanu PF”
<blockquote>I draw your attention to the subject in which Mathe, a teacher at Ensangu Primary School at Ensangu Village under Chief Jahana, who is a member of Zanu PF, has become a law unto himself.
He is a nuisance to Chief Jahana, village heads, and their subjects who do not condone his unethical conduct.
On December 2, in Bulawayo, five village heads led by Ernest Nxumalo and three other villagers from Village 5 of Insango, Ward 22, Insiza North, had to meet me to air their grievances regarding the unlawful behaviour of Mathe, who has unlawfully taken over responsibilities and roles of the chief.
Because of all this, the man has become one of the Zanu PF untouchables.
Since May 2012, Mathe has been unlawfully selling land at prices ranging from R5 000 to R6 000, and mainly to land grabbers from Mashonaland.
It was indicated to me that so far, 5 946 villages have been dubiously registered for land or even allocated the same by Mathe using his destructive connections with Zanu PF.</blockquote>
When contacted for comment Chief Jahana said he has received numerous reports about Mathe when he said:
<blockquote> I have many reports about Shame Mathe on land issues.
To me, that’s politics. I am not giving it much attention, but the only thing I will do is to seek legal action so that they prove their claim in court.
They once did the same and the government investigated and found me clean and now they are repeating the same claims again.</blockquote>
Land barons have caused the government headaches as they are causing havoc in towns and cities.

Zanu PF Official Selling State Land In Shangani - Report

A boundary dispute between two traditional leaders threatens to suck in President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Chief Mapanzure from the Midlands Province under whose jurisdiction Mnangagwa’s rural home lies and Chief Jahana from Insiza are involved in a quarrel over territory.
The dispute has reportedly drawn in Agriculture and Resettlement Minister Perrance Shiri and a local Joint Operations Command (JOC) taskforce.
Speaking to the Daily News on Monday, Matabeleland Chiefs Council secretary Nothiwani Dlodlo said that Chief Mapanzure was encroaching into Chief Jahana’s territory. Said Dlodlo:
<blockquote>There is an ongoing dispute between Mapanzure and Jahana over the boundary of their land. Unfortunately, the land belongs to Jahana since it was gazetted by the government.
However, perhaps chief Mapanzure is using his widely-held belief that he is close to the president, hence his unrelenting push for land.
Mapanzure has already occupied the land where villages with three heads have already been settled.</blockquote>
When contacted for comment by the Daily News, Chief Jahana had this to say:
<blockquote>We are currently in Gwanda for a meeting with the officials from the Local Government ministry over the matter. What we understand is that they want to take our land and put it in the Midlands Province, but that’s what we are rejecting.
Information reaching us is that they want to create Chief Mapanzure one and Chief Mapanzure two to accommodate their fellow kinsmen, but we are saying no to that.
They are using the advantage of their somehow closeness to the president to try and grab my land.
So, today, if these officials we are meeting fail to properly address this matter, we are definitely going to take this matter up with the president himself.
This will help us see if he is the one behind it or just people hiding behind his name.</blockquote>
Chief Mapanzure rejected claims that he was taking advantage of his closeness to Mnangagwa. He said:
<blockquote>It’s a long story that started long back when the delimitations were being done and that place that is being talked about belongs to us.
But for a fact, this matter started way before Mnangagwa became president and it was handled by former Local Government ministers as (Saviour) Kasukuwere and (Ignatius) Chombo.
It’s only that these people are trying to politicise the matter.</blockquote>
Insiza District lies in Matabeleland South Province and shares borders with Vungu, Mberengwa, Zvishavane, Umzingwane and Gwanda.
