The government will soon issue coupons to targeted households to enable them to buy subsidised roller meal at the stipulated price, Information Minister <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Monica_Mutsvangwa" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Monica Mutsvangwa</a> has revealed.
Mutsvangwa told journalists after Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting that the compilation of a database of beneficiaries is at an advanced stage. She said:
<blockquote>Government has thus moved in to redress the situation using a two-pronged approach.
Firstly, it was decided that the price be raised to $70 per 10kg bag of maize-meal from $50.
Secondly, a targeted coupon scheme for the vulnerable is in the offing with the compilation of a database at an advanced stage.
In terms of knowing who are vulnerable, we have the data; it is a question of going through all the districts and get the names of all the vulnerable. This is what Government is doing at the moment.</blockquote>
Mutsvangwa said the coupon system is expected to ensure that the vulnerable people whom subsidies were supposed to benefit will access the subsidised maize-meal.
On Tuesday, Finance and Economic Development Minister <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mthuli_Ncube" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mthuli Ncube</a> recommended that the price of subsidised roller meal be adjusted to $70 from $50 to kill the black market.

Govt To Decide Who Buys Cheap Mealie Meal

Addressing delegates to the Institute of Administration and Commerce annual conference in Victoria Falls yesterday, Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) Deputy Governor, Kupukile Mlambo said that they will soon raid fuel dealers who reject coupons.
Said Mlambo:
<blockquote>There were enough stocks of fuel and cooking oil but the problem is that dealers could not cope with demand due to panic buying. If there was no panic buying, we wouldn’t have shortages. We have increased fuel allocation from $5 million to $10 million  per week but they complained about timeliness. I am disappointed that a lot of them are demanding cash even if motorists are carrying coupons. The country has a shortage of foreign currency. The challenge is that fuel dealers who consume much of the foreign currency don’t bring any. They must honour that coupon because they have taken your money. We are against it and we will descend on them.</blockquote>
